High oil pressure

Recommended Posts

I have completely rebuilt the engine of my Ex USA TR6 and am a little concerned about the oil pressure. It seems to be running higher than other TR's in our club.

My car has now done 3600 miles since rebuild and the oil pressure is as follows

Running cold 100 PSI (50 MPH +)

Running normal 75 to 80 PSI (70 MPH)

Idling 50 PSI

A new oil pump was fitted as part of the rebuild and I changed the oil and filter at 1000 miles, it has the short length screw on type. The pressure relief valve has also been replaced. I have a long type screw on filter waiting to fit, but I don't know if that will make a difference putting a little more oil into the system.

The car is running on Penrite 20W-50.

Don, years ago I fitted a spin on filter on my 6. At the same time I also ,on advise of the supplier, fitted a stronger relief spring giving me the oil pressure you mention. Later I was advised to remove it and use the normal spring, what I did. As a follow up a TR specialist told me that high oil pressure does not necessarily means godd oil circulation, and that is what counts ;)

Don

I had similar pressures after I built mine, over the next 10,000 it slowly came down to 70psi above 2500revs and 25 at tickover both hot and stabilised at that, still get 100psi when cold, can't say it's caused any problems, don't think the cold pressure is all that important anyway. Agree with Jean it's ciculation that matters, the pressure variations on newly built engines are probably down to how much care is taken to grind the crank accurately.
