I am broken down!
Car was running ok, then developed the usual misfire , then list power and stopped.
I coasted into a pub... Did some basic checks, then called the rac.
Rac man 'tested' ignition and couldn't get a spark.
He went off to Moss, nearby!, and returned with a gold coil.
Thus produced sparks but no difference to the engine.
Fuel pump running and sounding normal.
Engine turns over rapidly but does not really try to fire.
Once it started to run very badly then some smoke came out of the air filter, k&n on the phelum, so I turned it off.
Now I'm waiting for the rescue truck :-(
I am not enjoying tr6 ownership right now!

Thanks Andrew.
I have just had a chat with Neil and as a result ordered an MU from him.
The inside of the outlet fitting was itself rusted, i don't think this would have happened over the recent weeks that i have had the car as its been run very regularly, in fact its run more in the last month than in the last couple of years i reckon !
I have already changed the main fuel filter, and will be sure to clean/replace the filter in the fuel line when i fit the new MU.
Watch this space for progress !

Thanks for the replies again !
I think i will take the MU off in the week and see what state its in.
I note that K Raven Smith is selling reconditioned MUs for £100 on ebay, too good to be true ??
This must be the same Karen Raven Smith as recommended above ??
If so for that price i might as well just replace the MU again ??
Looking that the box of records the current MU was fitted in 2002, since when the car has done less than 10k miles. so its been sitting around a lot. I also note that the tank was replaced in 2003, so the MU probably suffered from the rusty old tank before it was replaced??
Looking forward to getting this issue fixed now !

Update !
Today I decided to investigate a little further.
I replaced the injector on cylinder 3, the culprit, made no difference
I replaced all the spark plugs and checked the electrics over, made no difference.
I took off the braided fuel line to no 3 injector and made up a spare one from the old plastic lines in my junk box.
Before fitting i had a look at the MU junction for no 3 cylinder, its one of the bottom ones on te mu, it contains a spring loaded valve, and its full of rust !!
So i cleaned the fitting out as best i could, refitted and bled, and it makes a definite difference.
After a blast the car hesitated a little but then sorted itself out.
The inside of the fitting and the rubber seal are both now pitted and my clean up seems to have made things a bit better but not 100%
So i guess that through lack of use the MU and associated fittings have rust in them .
Looking at the Moss catalogue the offending fittings dont seem to be listed, and i would rather try changing these before buying a new MU.
Does anyone know where i might source some??
Or should i bite the bullet and get another MU, this one is only a few years old, actually maybe nearer 10 !

Went for a test run earlier, problem still there.
Immediately after a full throttle blast, not during the blast when the car is fine, the engine runs on 4/5 cyls. The problem does not fix itself whether I drive gently or apply lots of throttle, although the degree if engine roughness dies vary.
I've checked the filler cap, is vented and no rush of air when I opened it after the run.
There's no sludge in the tank.
Think I need to check fuel pressure!
Or maybe replace the 10 year old Bosch pump with one of the kits available??

I have looked in a pet shop but couldn't find any suitable tube, might try the carpet shop !
Today i am mostly playing with my motorbikes, and next weekend am sailing Xtra to her new home in Portsmouth Harbour, so many toys so little time !
But I do have the TR6 booked in for suspension work and diff mount reinforcing and undersealing at Rees Bros at the start of May, in the meantime i'm fitting an oil cooler and hopefully some speakers

Shall investigate further tomorrow and report back!

Thanks for the additional suggestions guys !
I do have a Bosch pump, fitted in about 2003 by a PO.
Its a reasonably neat fit, but retains the original fuel filter.
I too suspect that my fuel pressure may be low, but the PRV does operate and is also newish.
Is there any easy way to check fuel pressure?
Last night i took the car for a trip, 60 mile round trip on the motorway.
I kept the speed down, 3000 revs or about 65mph, and no problems occurred.
So.... I am thinking it was the 'spirited' use that caused the problem, as on two occasions when i have had a good blast the symptoms have arisen. I do want to be able to have a blast sometimes ;-)
Hmmmmm.......

Hi Andrew
I'd be very interested to hear more about your Overdrive conversion as i plan to do that to my '6 at some point.
Who's doing the work, whats the ballpark cost?

Hi Guy, thanks for your suggestions.
My ignition system is all new apart from the coil.....
Cooling system also new, ie flushed and new silicon hoses, and elec fan with propper switch in a SS lower pipe, it comes on at just over half temp on the guage and cools things nicely.
I do think its vapourisation.
Today i tried an experiment of driving at no faster than an indicated 70, which is about 60, and the problem did not occur.
SO maybe my non-overdrive car isnt liking the speed !
Otherwise its great :-)
Steve
PS, i dont yet have a manual switch on the elec fan, as i cant find a nice bracket to fix it to. Am wondering if running the fan when i come off the motorway to get rid of some of the hot air might help ?

Well Stuart's 'nearly new' panel arrived today.....so i spent an hour cutting the holes for the speakers and fitting it :
New Panel and spkrs fitted by steve_derbyshire, on Flickr
They look great and sound pretty good for their size !
Thanks go to Stuart, what a good chap !

My TR6 is running great now, and no smell of fuel anymore either !
However if i take it for a good blast, such as more than 10 miles at 70+ on the motorway, it then runs terribly.
Yesterday i drove one junction on the m25, then 2 up the A3 at about 80 ( which is probably less than 70 as the speedo is optimistic).
After exiting the A3 and slowing for the exit roundabout the car was running roughly just like when the injectors need bleeding.
This was immediately after coming off the A3, and it persisted for the few miles left of my journey.
This morning the car started a little roughly but within a mile was fine.
Any suggestions as to how to avoid this problem?
I do have braided hoses, perhaps these are the cause ??

Success !
The final bit of a leak was cured with a new tank fitting for the PRV return, consisting of a 90 degree bent pipe, threaded fitting and olive.
The tank is bone dry now and no smell of petrol even after a spirited drive
I did have a major PI bleeding job to do after the fuel tank was drained, pipes and filter removed.
At first the car ran fine but after a while the air that must have got into the system resulted in no pulse on cyls 3 and 4.
3 cured instantly with a gentle opening of the injector, engine off, loads of air came out under pressure !
4 needed a lot of bleeding into a bucket, engine running, ..... but eventually I have a 6 cylinder motor again :-)
Ive fitted the tonneau cover this afternoon, it looks great, and we are off out to the pub this evening
Happy TRing to you all now that summer is here

Steel tank.
Seems in very good, looks new!, condition
Without removing the tank it's difficult to examine the opening closely.

Hi Guys
I have a slight fuel leak where the PRV return line gors into my fuel tank.
The car has a Bosch pump, and the PRV seems to have been replaced in about 2002, as was the tank.
I noticed staining on top of the tank so have renewed the rubber hoses, and fitted propper clips, and ptfe'd the thread...... but still there is a slight leak !
I think it might be the right angle fitting itself leaking, ie between the pipe and the threaded part of the fitting.
Are these available ?
Any other suggestions ??
I'm going to be 'in that area' later in the week as Stuart is sending me a new bulkhead panel to fit my speakers into, so keen to fix the leak too :-)

I have a personal policy with the RAC, covers me for my two cars and my two bikes and in fact any car that i am in !
They recovered the TR6 from the Lake District to Surrey, fabulous service !

Hurrah !
Had a cancelled meeting this morning so did a couple of jobs on the TR6, namely replacing the old perished rubber fuel pipes and fitting the Blaupunkt speakers.
In order to fit the speakers i needed to align the magnets with the gap around the petrol tank quite precisely, not too difficult but left me with a gap in the bulkhead trim panel below the speakers as whoever fitted the previous speakers hacked the holes out with a chainsaw ( well it looks like that !)
So i guess i need a new Bulkhead panel really, unless someone has a good idea for filling the ( half inch) gap??
Presently I've taped over it with electrical tape.
The speakers do a reasonable job, at least with the hood up as with it down they are decidedly muffled !
I shall investigate Tim's subwoofer solution, and the 'cardboard tube' solution also :-)

The Racetorations brackets are about the most expensive ones!
I have just fitted them to my own car, so as far as I'm concerned they're great!
What's the purpose if your enquiry?
-
If it's made of aluminium then I'd say it's a Racetorations unit.

Thanks Tim !
I especially like the Alpine sub, ive been thinking of something like that as i suspect the little speakers wont have much bass and midrange.
My speakers are at the depot as i was out working when they arrived, so will be days before i can try them :-(
In the meantime i might look out for a fleabay sub :-)

Hi Ivor, yes there are worse places to stop, and worse weather.
I dont think it's ignition.
Although the symptoms are a bit like the ignition timing is way out, but the distrib isn't loose and it's in the right position by eye.
Under the 'it's the last thing you touched' rule I was investigating the fueling yesterday. Although I only touched the injector/mu port fir cyl 3.
Bloody classic cars!
And I'm not impressed with 'on time' recovery services either!
