  1. Hi Graeme ~

Fitting too strong valve springs does cause camshaft problems. Get the standard TR4A one's as soon as possible. I would be inclined not to fit temporary springs but to wait for the new one's. If your engine is stripped then there's no hurry really is there? (unless Sue is giving you grief!!)

    Best regards ~

    Tom.

  2. Hi again Steve ~

Depending on the space between the rocker and the end cap you could possibly use plain washers and if need be, you could

reduce the thickness by placing a sheet of wet & dry on a flat surface and then rubbing the washer against it until you achieve the desired thickness.

  3. Hi Steve, I fitted roller rockers to my TR3A. I replaced the 'spring spacers' with competition (solid) spacers and I did away with the 'springs'at both ends of the rocker shaft and fitted shims instead. My end rockers are 'free' (no friction)

with just a slight sideways movement.

  4. Nice work Pete, great shots!

I've given up all hope of sending photo's to the Forum. I've got so many pictures of all the modifications I've carried out on my 3A which I'd love to share with fellow members. Why have they made it impossible for people like me to contribute?

I suppose it's some little anorak who spends all his little time thinking of ways to make life impossible for everyone else!!

  5. Hi Lee, I was very lucky a few years ago when I purchased a sidescreen recovering kit from John Skinner in Cirencester.

(Tel: 01285 657410). Unfortunately I don't think they do them anymore, but give them a ring just in case. The kits came in various colours. I've yet to fit mine. If you think you can 'go it alone' and make your own I can send you a copy of the fitting instructions which came with mine ~ just PM me your email address.

  6. Hi Paul,

I fitted a 'Flamethrower' coil from Distributor Doctor to both my TR3A and 'E' Type Jaguar. I also fitted an Albertronic 123 electronic distributor to both cars. With electronic ignition you can increase the plug gaps to good effect.

I increased my plug gaps to 32 thou. with no ill effect.

  7. The reason I decided to fit a curved heater bulkhead connection was that in the event of an elbow hose giving up the ghost

it is far easier to fit a straight length of hose which is readily available in any motor factors. I've yet to modify the other side, but it will be done. The rest of my hoses are silicon.

Ash, I would suggest that you solder an olive to the bulkhead pipe. That way the hose cannot 'blow off'.

I'm surprised that the bulkhead adaptor shown has a swaged end on one side only!!!

  8. Hi Dick,

As I recall the vacuum device was used as a fuel economiser. The Cooper 'S's never had vacuum advance and I believe that 'performance' distributors were never fitted with it. When I had a Mini Cooper I fitted a non vacuum distributor after reading in the classic car press that such a mod. would be beneficial to performance.

  9. I went to start my 3A the other day after it had stood for a month or more and it took a while until it started. In normal warm weather it starts immediately but due to the extremely cold weather recently I think it's quite normal that any car has difficulty starting. My car has a petrol primer on the pump and I always prime it before starting. I carried out an experiment during the last cold snap and put a greenhouse heater in my garage facing the car and after about an hour I went to start the car and she fired up immediately.

    Tom.
