Hi John ~
Have you never heard of Rip-Off Britain?
I'm in the process of recovering my sidescreens with a John Skinner kit which I bought a long time ago. I shall be replacing the inferior Cobex windows with 2mm perspex.

Hi again Steve ~
Depending on the space between the rocker and the end cap you could possibly use plain washers and if need be, you could
reduce the thickness by placing a sheet of wet & dry on a flat surface and then rubbing the washer against it until you achieve the desired thickness.

Hi Steve ~
I already had an assortment of shims from long time ago. Try Revington's or other TR specialists.

Hi Steve ~
You don't have to fit the 'spacers' but you can shim the end sections instead of using the 'springs'.

Hi Steve, I fitted roller rockers to my TR3A. I replaced the 'spring spacers' with competition (solid) spacers and I did away with the 'springs'at both ends of the rocker shaft and fitted shims instead. My end rockers are 'free' (no friction)
with just a slight sideways movement.

Hi Nick,
Make sure your solenoid is earthing properly. I had the same problem with my 3A.

I've signed up to Photobucket but I now can't find it anywhere on my PC. Where's it hiding???

Nice work Pete, great shots!
I've given up all hope of sending photo's to the Forum. I've got so many pictures of all the modifications I've carried out on my 3A which I'd love to share with fellow members. Why have they made it impossible for people like me to contribute?
I suppose it's some little anorak who spends all his little time thinking of ways to make life impossible for everyone else!!

Hi Norman ~
It's "DOWN" for overdrive.

Hi Lee, I was very lucky a few years ago when I purchased a sidescreen recovering kit from John Skinner in Cirencester.
(Tel: 01285 657410). Unfortunately I don't think they do them anymore, but give them a ring just in case. The kits came in various colours. I've yet to fit mine. If you think you can 'go it alone' and make your own I can send you a copy of the fitting instructions which came with mine ~ just PM me your email address.

I'll be replacing the standard heater on my TR3A with a Clayton one which I've already got. The standard heaters were
never very efficient.

Hi Paul,
I fitted a 'Flamethrower' coil from Distributor Doctor to both my TR3A and 'E' Type Jaguar. I also fitted an Albertronic 123 electronic distributor to both cars. With electronic ignition you can increase the plug gaps to good effect.
I increased my plug gaps to 32 thou. with no ill effect.

Hi Bob,
I bought the Revington modification a few years ago and, as far as I am concerned, it did little difference to the (heavy) steering. I ended up fitting the far superior rack and pinion steering conversion from TR Bitz. Dead easy to fit and well worth it.

Hi Goosey,
I converted my 3A to R&P steering and was able to fit a (1966 model) Mini Cooper four way indicator switch to the original top column and make it self cancelling. I can send you detailed photo's of the conversion if you PM me your email address.

Stan,
I remember the very first brand new TR3A we received in the garage where I used to work and I well remember noting that the front apron was dished. TR3A's were never manufactured with 'round' or 'flat' noses.

The reason I decided to fit a curved heater bulkhead connection was that in the event of an elbow hose giving up the ghost
it is far easier to fit a straight length of hose which is readily available in any motor factors. I've yet to modify the other side, but it will be done. The rest of my hoses are silicon.
Ash, I would suggest that you solder an olive to the bulkhead pipe. That way the hose cannot 'blow off'.
I'm surprised that the bulkhead adaptor shown has a swaged end on one side only!!!

If only I knew how to attach a photo. to this Forum thing I could show you how I modified my right hand heater pipe union
for the better (to my mind, anyway!)

Dum Dum can be got from Frost Automotive ~ I still use it and yes, I used it to plug any gaps in the 'trough'. Incidentally I made my trough form a piece of exhaust pipe cut in half which provided two troughs.

That's exactly the one featured in the technicalities CD ROM and which is fitted to my car. They are very easy to make. I made sure that my drain system makes contact with the 'A' post so that no water can fall behind the drainer.

The TR Register 'Technicalities' DVD (or is it a CD) shows how to construct a drain system at the back of the front wing.
I've done this excellent modification on my 3A.

Hi Dick,
As I recall the vacuum device was used as a fuel economiser. The Cooper 'S's never had vacuum advance and I believe that 'performance' distributors were never fitted with it. When I had a Mini Cooper I fitted a non vacuum distributor after reading in the classic car press that such a mod. would be beneficial to performance.

Hi Kevin,
To hell with points! Fit the electronic system and completely forget about them! It's the best thing that I ever did.
I've got them fitted to my 3A and my 'E' Type Jaguar.

I went to start my 3A the other day after it had stood for a month or more and it took a while until it started. In normal warm weather it starts immediately but due to the extremely cold weather recently I think it's quite normal that any car has difficulty starting. My car has a petrol primer on the pump and I always prime it before starting. I carried out an experiment during the last cold snap and put a greenhouse heater in my garage facing the car and after about an hour I went to start the car and she fired up immediately.

It's a very small garage because it's jam packed full of TR spares!
Valve springs, opinions sought
in TR4/4A Forum
Posted
Hi Graeme ~
Fitting too strong valve springs does cause camshaft problems. Get the standard TR4A one's as soon as possible. I would be inclined not to fit temporary springs but to wait for the new one's. If your engine is stripped then there's no hurry really is there? (unless Sue is giving you grief!!)
Best regards ~
Tom.
