  1. Hi John

Perhaps very few! Just build it meticulously to spec.

My Ex works car has 86mm pistons, fully balanced bottom end, flywheel lightened to 22.5lb, nicely ported head, cam profile more akin to the TR4 than the stock tr3 and it goes very well. (These features are how I found it in 1979, not what I have done since.)

Tons of low down torque and pulls very strongly from 1200rpm through to 4200rpm. Coupled with a 4.1:1 axle makes it pretty quick to 85-90, but a little breathless at the top end :D. Perhaps the axle ratio and upgraded OD box plus lots of low down grunt gave them the edge?

  2. Hi I always use a length of threaded studding, I think 12mm, with double nuts on each and and some suitable 5mm plate with a hole in to act as top and bottom retainers. Compress the spring though the top and bottom shock mounting holes. Works very well, just make sure that if using repeatedly that the thread and nuts are in good condition before you use, don't want them to let go under full spring compression. :o

  3. Good point Mike.....it nearly caught me out 30 years ago.

So did the advice on valve clearance adjustment. I didn't know the rule of 9. Neither did Haynes when they advised to adjust 8 when 7 was open☺☺☺☺

motto of the story use the ST manual!

"This car does not seem to have been entered by the Triumph Works in any competitions, so, under the terms outlined on page 6 of Graham Robson's latest tome ("Works Triumphs in Detail"), could not be described as a "Works TR". Which is why it's not in Graham's book."

Grahams book contains a number of "Works Cars" that never competed, how does this square with the definition/terms?

ADU8B is one example, development etc etc.....its a works car, never competed.

ERW 412C,,,,,in every way looks identical to a works car, loaned to BB. Is it or not a works car?

UJB 642G Used soley for test / development/endurance proving car.

    WJB 189H, etc
