  1. I was also dubious about the strength of the standard 1/4” unf fixings.
To beef up the seat mountings, prior to my full restoration being painted, I made my own brackets and fixed extra weld on nuts under the floor pans. Available positions are governed by the need to fit them on the higher ribs in the floors and to avoid the chassis underneath. I ended up with 2 extra on the back mount and 1 extra on the front mount. These 3mm thick steel plates with the extra fixings also stiffen the floor pans.
The rear mount I made long enough to almost reach the transmission tunnel and fixed it down to the 5/16” unf bolt hole through the floor into the chassis. This removed the need to fit that awkward floor plate p/No 619585. There is a circular depression in the floor at that position which I filled with one of the thick circular rubber floor to chassis mount pads p/ No 608836.
I countersunk all the holes in the plates and used countersunk flat top Allen screws so that they are flush with the top of the plates. I applied a blob of non setting windscreen sealer to each screw as I fixed it so they will hopefully be free to remove easily in the future.

  2. Andy,

I’ve bought the Classic Car Stereo unit mentioned above. They supply an adaptor plate to fit into the H frame to mount it and a screen mounted adhesive aerial.
I can’t report on performance as the TR5 is still under restoration. The firm were helpful and living where you are you could visit to discuss, they’re just off A650 Tong St in Bradford.

  3. Andy,

I got fed up of the glued on door top pulls coming away, so on my TR5 restoration I will also be leaving the door tops plain in body colour.

I will be fitting the TR4 hinged door pull handles (p/No 650306.) My doors have the square holes punched but no fixings and as you say they are unobtainable. I’ve been considering tack welding 2 x 3/16”unf nuts onto a thin steel strip, something like the metal Signode banding, and then pop riveting that to the back of the door panel behind those 2 square holes. Check the hole dimensions because I think they are slightly too close together to suit the handle fixings.

  4. John, well worth a visit in my view if you’re even remotely nearby.
Also check out the Hotel de France at Le Chartre sur le Loir, about 50 minutes from the museum. In the 50s, 60s & 70s many of the top race teams stayed there and prepared the cars in the hotel garage before driving on the road to the circuit. Good displays of race heritage. See photo of Pedro Rodriguez driving Porsche 917 from hotel to circuit!!

If I thought I could get away with it I would plug the car body into the mains to give the little scrotes a warm welcome!

Personally I subscribe to  chopping a few hands off which would limit any future thieving.

    Couldn’t agree more.

  7. There was a very extensive post about solving this TR6 bonnet catch problem  by the TRR Scottish Director approx 18  -24 months ago but I can’t find it.
I seem to remember he removed the rad grille and used a long broom handle with a wire loop on it.

  8. I spoke to the Equipe folks at Race Retro today. They won’t even let my TR6 w/o roof and on Aeros screens into their 70s series at Silverstone.
They “might” put me into their Sunday Libre race, which will probably have GT3 Porsches and Gp1 Capris.
    No thanks.

Err that would stretch a TR6 block a bit!

    Stuart.

It certainly would, the block would look like a 6 circle version of the Audi car badge of overlapping rings.
78mm max bore for reliable 6 cylinder block.

  10. Hi Alan,

Good to see one of your rare forays onto the Forum. A good point, well researched and well made. Anyone would think you were a lawyer!

Roy was correct to a point. The long rear stays through the rear bulkhead were ok on a live axle car with the rear spring hanger being the most rear wards suspension mount, whereas on an IRS car the most rearward suspension mount was the back diff bridge/shock absorber mount.
The “relaxation” that you mention is a relatively recent development I believe, after much lobbying by, amongst others, Safety Devices following a number of scrutineering issues, including one of our TR6 colleagues being threatened with not being allowed to compete at Donington.

Hope to see you out racing somewhere this season

Roy, CSCC have a test day at Snetterton 14th March split into 3 groups, fast, intermediate and slower, with several sessions for each group. Good price.
    Entries opened yesterday.
Bailey and I are booked in.
    See you there?

  12. The quick racks come with an attached caveat from the suppliers (both Moss and Rimmers I believe) that they are not suitable for Competition use.
Cover your ar-e time, as that is the very use that the vast majority of people want them for.
