Dave we used to suffer same problem of breaking engine mounts racing Jaguars in the Seventies, went to solid ones in the end. Hopefully its not run a bearing, one consolation it wont go rusty!

    Stuart.

Stuart, thanks for your wise observations on my chassis’s enhanced resistance to rusting but it wasn’t a problem I had anticipated tackling in such a direct manner! I get enough oil mist generally from various sources to keep the car underside intact.

Solid mounts sounds a bit extreme.

i have found Revington’s uprated harder mounts good on my 3a.

    Hamish,

Thanks for the pointer to Revington. The website lists them for 6 cyl engine but says “No longer available.” I’ll give them a ring tomorrow. At one time TR7V8 mounts were harder rubber but everyone seems to list same item for TR5/6 & 7V8.

  3. The right engine mount rubber has sheared completely, probably due to shock of me engaging first instead of third, allowing engine to drop approx 1” on that side. This has pushed oil filter on left against chassis rail which has either split canister or distorted it so that top seal is open which has allowed oil to pump out under pressure. Car was still pulling well until the inevitable loss of too much oil to keep pressure up. I’m just hoping it was switched off in time to avoid bearing pick up.
Engine was coming out at end of season for a winter refresh but I still hope to get one more race at Croft in October.

  4. Mark had a remarkable race, for the last 4 laps keeping a Porsche 944 Turbo behind him with only a sheet of paper clearance between them, taking the flag 0.031 sec ahead. Fantastic performance.
Well done to Dave Bailey in the race after a qualifying problem causing him to start at the back of the grid.
My race started well but didn’t finish well. After a cautious early morning qualifying on a very greasy slippery damp track left us 26th in the 31 car grid I made up several places in the dry afternoon race conditions. Then just before the pit stop and driver change I mis engaged a gear causing possible engine damage. Second driver (Grandson Bailey) had to cut engine when oil pressure light came on 2 laps into his session. Race over. Car blathered in oil in engine bay and all left side.
    Investigation commences Monday.

  5. CSCC are running a race event at Oulton Park on Sat 23rd Sept.
I’ll be sharing my TR6 with my Grandson in the 40 minute Swinging 60s race. A total of 6 TRs in a combined grid of 31 cars, including various Lotus, Sunbeam Tigers, TVR Tuscans, Datsun 240Zs, Porsches, BMW, etc, etc.

Should be a good day out. All are welcome. If you attend come and say hello in the paddock.

I hope that others who are in their 80s will be encouraged to have a go and fettle their own TRs, probably with some help for the heavy lifting.

    Well done Ian.

I’ve been there myself, had to change the gearbox in my race TR6 at the Spa Summer Classic last year after a serious breakage in the Thursday test session to be ready for Friday qualifying.
It was a relatively light non O/D box and I’m only a Spring Chicken at 75, but all completed successfully with the aid my 20 year old Grandson and I was able to complete qualifying and races on both Saturday and Sunday. Very satisfying working with a young family member but it wasn’t the first time for us.
The 2 of us changed the diff to a lower ratio unit last Friday ready for an upcoming event at Oulton Park.

Another alternative to consider is Pete Cox (  https://petecoxsportscars.co.uk/  )

    Cheers Rich

    +1 for Pete Cox.
For a non o/d USA TR6 he supplied me with an A type o/d from a saloon, one of three he had at the time from Mike Papworth, stripped and rebuilt it along with my gearbox all at a reasonable price. He had to change the rear cover plate, solenoid mounting plate and speedo drive to suit the differences between saloon and TR6.
    Definitely worth a try.

Given the continued degredation in driving standards shown by far too many drivers, I for one would vote for a form of DQ (Driving Quotient) testing. Higher the score then you could use lanes 2,3,4 and lower scores must stay in lanes 1, 2....

There are drivers out there who are unaware of the presence of a Lane1.

  9. Hamish,

Thanks for the detailed report and well done on your o/all win. Another 2.38 secs to your bogey does seem a big ask. Would that have been set by Jim Johnson’s TR6? He’s a very long seasoned driver, even older than me with vast experience. Engine build by same guy as does my race engine.
I’ll be seeing Derek Pywell in the Spitfire at one of our TRLincs events soon to get his thoughts.
I think I may have raced against Malcolm Chapman in his TR7V8, then with multi coloured panels, in the old TRR race series many years ago. I seem to remember him prefacing every conversation with “..you know what I mean like…”

I’ve only ever spectated at Harewood once, as a fresh faced Student when at College in Leeds in about 1968. Sounds like I should make a return trip.

I hope you sort out your Weber problem and enjoy the rest of your your season.

I’m next out at Oulton Park with CSCC Swinging 60s on 23rd Sept. Local to you if you fancy a day out?

  10. James,

You will find that the caliper mounting bolt radius from the axle centre line is c. 1/4” larger on the later TR5/6 “mickey mouse” caliper mounts than on the earlier sidescreen car mounts.

I’ve tried different combinations on my TR5 using sidescreen mounts and slightly larger diameter sidescreen discs to use with 3 pot calipers from Rover P6B 3500 V8. All fit together but I just wasn’t confident that the sidescreen caliper mounts, which are considerably less robust than the 5/6 mounts, were man enough for the job when what I was looking for was to be able to jump on the brakes later!

The comment about racers of yore, Reg Woodcock, etc using these is correct. Brave men.

  11. I had to change plate 47 on my TR5 some years ago when the top projecting bracket that the solenoid connects to snapped off. I’m no expert, far from it, but I don’t remember the spring being under high compression. I approached it with some trepidation, imagining the contents behind the plate flying in all directions when I removed it, taking my eyes with it as they flew, but nothing untoward happened.
The biggest bind as I remember it was having to remove the interior, seats, carpets, H frame, etc to get the gearbox cover off to access the plate.

When we went to Harrogate to satisfy northern members wishes - they didn't  bother to turn up.

    Roger

A bold statement Roger. Another event when it lagged it down with rain as I remember. Do you have the regional attendance figures to back it up? Perhaps some of the Southern softies were just fearful of the potential for violence from we Northerners, bearing in mind that we all still wear Blue Woad up here.

Thanks Stuart for pointing the potential this one has for fraud boodly scamners they need shooting (oops maybe to right wing but hey that's how I feel)

I know Jeff Hooper, from Southampton area and with a mobile contact number matching the one in the Facebook advert. He previously raced a TR6 in the same series as me. Owner of several Classic cars, inc an E Type, his private circumstances would not require him to try to scam anyone. In my view he is a thoroughly genuine chap who you should have no qualms about dealing with. Like me a technophobe without a Facebook profile, I can understand his advert being channeled via his wife. Contact him, view the car and make up your own mind.
