  2. MOT Guide

Car, motorcycle and van MOT tests

    Guidance

Coronavirus: MOTs due from 30 March 2020

    What you need to do

Your car, motorcycle, light van or other light vehicle’s MOT expiry date will be automatically extended by 6 months if it’s due on or after Monday 30 March 2020.

This means that your vehicle will still have a valid MOT certificate for an extra 6 months.

You do not need to do anything for this to happen. However, you must keep your vehicle safe to drive.

This applies to all vehicles, including those that need their first ever MOT test.

ExampleYour vehicle’s MOT was due to expire on 3 April 2020.

This will automatically be extended to 3 October 2020. You will need to get your MOT by this date.

Check your MOT expiry date has been extended

Your MOT expiry date will usually be updated on the day your MOT is due to expire. However, it might be done up to a few days before.

You can check your MOT history to see when your MOT expiry date has been extended. Keep checking back if your new expiry date is not showing yet.

You will not get a paper certificate to show your new MOT expiry date.

If your vehicle tax is due

You can tax your vehicle as soon as your MOT expiry date has been updated.

Keep your vehicle safe to drive

You must make sure your vehicle is safe to drive (‘roadworthy’). It can be unsafe even if your MOT expiry date has been extended.

Find out how to check your vehicle is safeand read the rules about vehicle maintenance, safety and security.

You can be fined up to £2,500, be banned from driving and get 3 penalty points for driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition.

You should still take your vehicle to be repaired at the nearest open garage. The government is allowing them to remain open.

  3. Celebrity cruise line has refunded our excursion and speciality dining, and other extras paid direct.

What’s not so much good news but perhaps a warning,  as we booked our cruise through Planet Cruise part of the iglu group, despite Celebrity confirmation that we will receive a refund for the cruise portion of the holiday booked by Planet cruise. The refund will be paid to them.

On attempts to contact planet cruise we found that the numbers we originally had contact when booking were no longer available. Having finally tracked down a Planet cruise open line, we had  assurances that they will get the relevant department to contact me urgently,  we have not had any such contact or refund or following up to our initial contact.

Having also booked additional stay in Singapore, Hotel, transfer and upgrade seats. No assurance that any refund will be paid or won’t be.

After our initial booking and final payment I have found Planet cruise aloof, less than efficient at best,  possibly deliberately misleading at worse when asking advice or for help. Would I use them again or recommend them, I leave you to ponder that.

Have I got confidence that we will ever see any money from planet cruise? Not at all.

Sadly,  1000’s of people have paid a much higher price having contracted this virus.

  4. Where it comes from might seem to some of little importance at this time, it’s where it’s going perhaps.
If you are a person determined as high risk you are require to self isolation for 12 weeks.

3 months is a long time. What then Coronavirus is over no not at all, just dampened down the curve. As in Singapore it’s likely new peak, another 12 weeks?

I appreciate its not a choice, but three weeks no problem, then distance yourself fine but 12 weeks,  then a possibly further 12 weeks for someone with a life limiting illness is a high price.

I understand that going out and catching it would take up time of a doctor and thats selfish, although having talked to two doctors they have in so many words suggested you will not be a priority, but how would one feel if asking  someone to do your shopping, or pick up prescriptions they got it, I suggest devastated whether a family member or a volunteer.

You don’t have a choice,  stay at home no walks no keeping your distance total isolation. Thats possibly the hardest pill amongst those pills you are already taking.

  5. Iain you are right, I should know better. That’s the trouble having a poor sleep pattern and then indulging in  limited reading following these Headlines.

    Express Headlines

“Hantavirus: The disturbing way new deadly virus in China is spreading”

“A NEWLY reported death in China from a virus completely different to COVID-19 has recently surfaced, sparking fears“.

  6. Just read in Express about Hantavirus in China its reported the virus is completely different to COVID-19

A man on a bus died and was tested positive for hantavirus, a completely different virus to COVID-19 which is currently, according to express spreading . Other passengers have since been tested for hantavirus and are showing symptoms.

  7. While social distancing having self isolate I have been emptying my garages, roof, and sheds and store I found which I had years ago and had forgotten. In fact I  hadn’t even opened it until now. It’s a case for musical instruments and came with a property I purchased.

I would put on classified but I haven’t really fathomed that out yet. so if any one is interested PM me.

  8. Having just returned from the Middle East and India,  I now have a runny nose and cough, I had always intended to self isolate. I don’t have a temperature,  (it’s just a cold) which I picked up on the ship as a girl that helped me in customer care, while sniffing. I checked she had apparently been tested twice for Covid 19 over a week so I’m confident it was not Covid19.

When entering Dubai we were interviewed when boarding the ship, everyone’s temperatures was taken before we boarded and more forms. When entering India, more forms and my temperature was taken again. Everyone on board was made to attend the disembarking area whether going ashore or not it was compulsory.

When we arrived in Heathrow there was nothing, auto passport check gates opened and straight through.  There was a gentleman on board BA flight 198 Row 29H coughing with difficulty breathing when I brought  it to the attention of cabin crew they just asked him was he Ok he said yes and that was it. I later saw the cabin crew rushing to catch an adjoining flight. Hence I’m keeping clear of my family and everyone else for a week which runs out tomorrow night and even then not attending any events or gathering or visiting friends and  family for another week.

We are told not to contact your Doctor or 111 unless you have a temperature/ fever but there are conflicting advice, I was far more confident at Dubai and Mumbai even when planning to transfer from Dubai to Singapore than I am now. So better safe than sorry as I have no wish to pass on anything even a cold. I just hope others will do the same.

  9. Bill

I have sent PM with the telephone number of previous owner. So it’s your choice whether you make contact.  If you can’t get access to it, let me know here and I’ll find an alternative way some how. I’m not confident to put telephone numbers here.

    regards Derek

I had an enquiry from my brother in law a previous owner of this car, wanted to know if it’s still in use.

I see it’s Taxed I was wondering if the new owner is a member and whether he/she is prepared to allow contact. Just a mobile phone number would do.

If so would he PM me.
    Regards Derek

  11. That appears to cover most of my car content, I also take a clutch friction plate and bearing which I slip beside my tank, well wrapped plus 4 travel stands when travelling abroad.

As Roger said if you have TRRI European breakdown policy at £40 take your booklet and TSO Code.

Those insured with the TRRI classic car scheme are covered for parts while in the vehicle as standard.

Section 3 – Spare Parts and “Accessories
What is covered under this section
We will pay for the replacement or repair of your vehicle’s spare parts and accessories following loss or damage provided that the loss or damage occurs whilst they are kept in or on your vehicle or stored in your locked private garage as declared to us.”

“The maximum amount they will pay under Section 3 is 10% of your vehicle’s market or agreed value up to a maximum of £1000 for any claim arising out of the one incident”.

  12. My TR7 was valued at £4500 at the time, they came out realised it could not be repaired at the side of the road, it was taken to a garage, from which it was transported to my designated address and they provided me with a hire car for onward journey, the hire car was left at the port, a taxi was waiting for me when I got to the other-side and took me home. My car arrived 5 days later in a covered transporter.

I was close to Angouleme in France 600km journey in France plus ferry crossing to Plymouth from Roscoe  plus Taxi to home.

My car is still with me and just fine. You really do read some real  horror stories.

    Derek
