    Very very Harsh Geko.

I see a man, in an unenviable position, doing his utmost to balance the impossible tasks of trying to control the spread of a new novel virus - for which there is no treatment or preventive vaccine - whilst also trying to keep people in work, or funded if they can't work, and not allow the economy to be so badly damaged it will never recover. I also see an exasperated man trying to remain positive and polite when he is harangued by opposition MP's when they said they would work with him, and the media who seem intent on undermining every decision and take cognitive dissonance to a new level.

This is a man who was in intensive care himself just a few weeks back, but his role means he has to be in the House - other MP's should respect him for that and maintain appropriate distancing.

Edit - Cognitive Dissonance - a great term, thanks for using it Nigel in another thread

  2. Taking out your car is the topic This virus has brought about many opinions on our forum which I have contributed to perhaps more than I should some might say. Forgive me but it has helped me pass the time of day.  Reading this brings to mind other comments what we should or should not do.

I’ve listened to ridicule of the Government a cleaner can come into your house but not family member, it sounds ridiculous except having a family member around doesn’t help the economy. It doesn’t get cleaners working and the Government want, no need the resurgent of the economy. Also your less likely to interact will a relative stranger than a family member.

Cleaners go from house to house.  Their professional, their products the nature of the business is to clean surfaces. Provided there is a process a rigid routine and distancing the risk is reduced. While it won’t eliminate it, but keeping it below the R rate below 1 is the intention. 1 on 1. If I intended using a cleaner I’d know what regime they had in place before they entered my property and I’d distance myself with no interaction they are hear to do a job.

One member of your family’s can see you in a public place, just one, Why?  Why in a public place?
R rate 1  on 1 means you reduce the risk. It’s the Government trying to instil the message keep R below 1.

I have been  staying in, isolating but some might say I’m cheating, my daughter from time to time drops something off, but stands back metres apart.  We chat at the door while she down the path. Sometimes she brings a collapsible chair sits in the garden on the grass and we chat, even to both my wife and myself I’m fortunate I have the facilities, but at a distance. I don’t need someone to say it’s alright or undermine the governments message by saying on the media you are spreading mix message, I do it quietly. Knowing that I have not endangered her or us.

I have no intentions of rushing out in my car or meeting her in a park or any where or anyone else for that matter just because I have permission. But if I need to go out I can’t see the problem taking my TR it just as reliable as anything else. I can’t feel guilty for that. Being over 70 or having a serious life treating illness should not come into it  in fact, it’s more reason to get out and about but that’s something else.

When Or if I go out, when stop I will take every precaution to remain safe,  But I understand others might not and perhaps why others have concerns.

It’ll be worth £100. I guess though if it’s permitted it’s permitted and providing I distance myself and my plus 1 is my wife. It should be OK.

  5. Having isolated since March 10th only going out once with blood tests. I had an appointment at Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital today for my check up and intended taking the TR 50 mile round trip.

With the XF SORNed I was really looking forward to have a genuine reason to drive it. A phone call dashed that, it had been changed to a phone appointment.

From Wednesday I am allowed to drive it  if I need to, I will and not feel guilty. :D

Its a simple strategy, let those that can not work from home go to work "as safely as they can"......if we run into a problem with R increasing to 1 or above, shut down again.

They are being used to test the water.

You never know it might just work...............i'm staying well clear because I don't think for one second it will work watching peoples reckless behaviour.

A new peak in 10 days time is my predication, which I hope is wrong.

    Iain

Like Iain I too am hopeful that this strategy works because if it does not, and lockdown continues and keeps continuing, I believe the resulting economic recession, that will occur,  will be horrendous, and non related Covid 19 death toll will be equally significant.

I believe based on the fact 85% have already complied,  like him the majority will remain clear of reckless individuals and hopefully the authorities will deal with them.

The Government has confirmed that it will take whatever action is necessary,  hopefully it will not be necessary.

I also agree with Iain I hope his 10 day prediction is wrong.

    Agreed . . .harsh

BoJo could have promissed a bag of gold for everyone and still, all we would hear is moaning

The news outlets, the political opposition of any hue and a lot of the population don't care what the message is, they just want to be heard.

Yes it was pre-recorded . . . .should it have been live, with the chance for questions?

    No.

    Why?

This way, we get 20 hours or so to mull over the general message, BEFORE, the full 50 page message is presented in parliament, where the offical opposition will have had proir copies and our MP's and apparently, some members of the public, will be able to question the PM about it.

If the 20 or so hours were being used to think instead of shout inane comments, maybe we could make some real progress

Having listened to a TV morning show I’ve established,

That as a result of Boris speech we will now have 1,000,000,00 of sons and daughters rushing to see us parents one at a time.

With millions rushing out driving miles to take lots of walks and sunbath in parks, and play football or other sports with family members

Transport buses and tubes will be over run because of relaxed rules

because people that can’t work from home will be back in work.

This will cause loss of thousands of lives.

My response  that is totally unacceptable what was he thinking. I need to listen to this idiot.

Having listened, we now need those that can’t work from home (reference to the Construction workers and manufacturing works) need to go back to work. Not hospitality or retail at this time and only later if the number allow, guide lines to employers to follow, including distancing requirements.

A request not use transport unless you need it, and a request to cover face should you have to. Now this has been said earlier,  this area don’t have tubes and limited other transport. Most construction workers I know, use their own transport to ferrying them selves and tools to their place of work.

Obviously other will be returning to work but surely, surely as individuals we have a responsibility to ourselves and others, from what was said 85% of the public have acted responsible.

I know my daughters would not risk me or my wife and even if they would, I wouldn’t let them. I am able to distance myself and if when I got somewhere I could not I’d move on.

Repeatedly he referred to caution and if necessary he will stop and lock down again.

  8. should now be “ haranguing ” these papers with questions along the line of “ you published incorrect information” ?... “who gave it to you” ?...” what steps did you take to check it “ ?... “ aren’t you you going to apologise for lying to the public ?”...” when are going to resign “? ... “ why aren’t you going to resign” ? etc which will be similar to their constant stupid behaviour.

    image.png.0018e314d462b817c32962947cd87983.png

    Mick

I can’t find any of those above questions in any of these papers headlines.

Clearly the Government have not got it all right,  of course we should call the Government to account

Of course the journalists and their papers would never lie or bend the truth or produce headlines and or content to help sell their papers or that might mislead just to suits their political view point.

    image.png

Therefore why would anyone suggest haranguing them when unlike the Government they get everything right without hindsight

We wouldn’t want to hold them to the same account as we do the Government

    Derek,

My original thought, or that of interviewers?     It was the late, great Robin Day,  who wrote that at when interviewing politicians, he kept at the front of his mind the question, "Why is this b4s74^d lying to me?".  He died twenty years ago, but his lesson for journalists still stands.    And the - thank goodness, still living - Jeremy Paxman, who asked the then Home Secretary the same  question twelve times in the same interview, because he would not give an answer.     When bluster and diversion are the politicians response, asking the same question may be as revealing as a guilty answer.

I'm sad as well as angry at the state we are in, but that is becasue I am informed, not because I am influenced.

    John

I too am old enough and fortunate enough to have watched both these journalists in action.  A single journalist asking the same question in an interview 12 times because he interviewee fails to answer is one thing. Having 12 separate journalists asking the the same question to get the same answer is another. Hence my original thought observation.

Their deaths here and abroad is the result of a shocking virus, which has been transported around the world.

I wonder here if in your informed opinion you honestly believe that, had those  members previous running the Labour Party or even those current running the Labour Party,  been in Government they would be or would have been better placed to take us though this pandemic.

I recall a note left by a minister,  having just been removed from Government by the people, to a incoming Tory Government.

My concern is that the public have shown (certainly in the South West) a distinct change in behaviour this week. Traffic volumes are very much higher. Compliance with social distancing very much poorer. I think they think "its all over", because we have "reached the peak".........Boris needs to get a grip and fast before peak number 2 is on us.

Come on, I’m not sure what TV you are watching, original thought might be interesting occasionally.

Questions asked and answered are asked again and again. Sometimes when I listen to Andrew Marr or Red Andy as he was know in his younger days I have cringe.

Propaganda is communication that is used primarily to influence an audience and further an agenda, which may not be objective and may be presenting facts selectively to encourage a particular synthesis or perception, or using loaded language to produce an emotional rather than a rational response to the information that is presented.

  13. The Government has the ability to procure PPE and therefore has a responsibility to its citizens, to acquiring it and distributing to where needed. However care home are a business and they have the responsibility too for those they care for and paid to. It not just the responsibility of governments.

Like Nigel I have had members of my family staying in residential and care homes, standards vary. In my Grandfathers and wife case it was like a hotel, they were there for years, even when taken ill my grandfather was nursed back to health while in his room. In my mother’s case it was just weeks and we removed her, mum had Alzheimer’s, my father had been advised that would be the best place for her. Within days she started deteriorating, reduced to sitting in a chair in a communal area looking lost with little reaction. She returned home and while she lived in the past was soon walking, talking and smiling again.

The Guests in residential and care homes mainly spend their time inside, the staff on the other hand do not.  The Government can’t  be at every home they issue  guidelines the homes interpret them and put them in practice and should then rigorously follow them. . We need to stop just blaming governments. Pigeon holes, hero’s and villains so often portrayed is to readily banded about perhaps. Sometimes by those with an agenda?

  14. Following in from Rod 1883 post

Why has London got more Covid Virus than say Cornwall or Midlands than Scotland.

Statistics and Data may not be available but is that a case that density has no baring.

I understand that Paris and London will have similar figures as will any similar city, but if the population is spread over a bigger area as is the case of France and Germany contact frequency with others will be less.

I drive through Brittany France and see a fewer cars  with houses spaced out.  Logic would indicate less contact less chances of spreading the virus surely therefore density has some baring on the ability to spread and therefore some impact on the figures, perhaps I am being to simplistic or just simple  I am happy for someone to explain in simple terms why it doesn’t .

  16. Some say the BBC is no longer an independent broadcasting company interested in unbiased reporting.

I understand a recent complaint was made that the doctors interviewed regarding PPE were hand picked having been or are Labour activists. If this is confirmed.

Has the BBC become politically manipulating, instead of unbiased? If so perhaps they should not be the countries funded Broadcasting company.

  18. Saving Your Health, One Mask at a Time

    Peter Tippett MD PhD

We all hear the same things: wash your hands, don't touch your face, stay at home, stay 6 feet away from others. Viruses live on boxes and plastic and doorknobs and... EVERYWHERE.

How does the average person decide what measures to follow unless they truly understand how these things work or have a clear set of “rules” they can abide by?

I am an Internal Medicine-certified, Emergency Room MD with a PhD in Biochemistry. I have also spent much of my professional life in the high-tech world helping people understand how risk, infection, and the growth of infection behaves. So I thought it might be helpful to folks in my network to explain how personal protection from a virus like SARS-CoV-2 (the formal name of the virus that causes COVID-19) actually works, how any given measure individually lowers risk, how various countermeasures work together, and most importantly, to give you some simple guidelines for day-to-day living in this new COVID world.

Bottom Line on Masks & Gloves:

Wear a mask when you are in “exposure” zones (mainly places with other people).

Treat your home, car, and yard as safe places (no mask or gloves).

Be on high alert on what you are doing with your hands when you are in “danger zones.” This is when you must not touch your face.

Consider wearing gloves (even winter gloves or work gloves can be helpful) but only for short periods of time and only when in “touch exposure” danger zones.

Remove your gloves (and mask) when you return to your safe place.

Wash your hands every single time you take off your gloves or mask or move from a danger zone back to a safe zone.

When you are at home and after washing up, you can relax, scratch your nose, rub your eyes and floss your teeth…without worry.

    Protections Work Together

All protections or countermeasures are only partially effective. For example, wearing the seat belt in your car reduces the likelihood of dying by about 50% compared with not wearing it. You can think about that as horrible (“it will fail half the time!”), or as great (“it cuts the risk of dying in half!”). For everything we care about, in all aspects of life, we solve this “risk” problem by using countermeasures together to improve their collective effectiveness. Independently, air bags reduce the risk of dying by about 30-40%. When added together with seatbelts, they are synergistic and reduce risk together by 65-70%. We add licensing, speed limits, anti-lock brakes, police enforcement and other things to achieve very good risk reduction (well into the upper 90s). We need to be even more careful when we drive in more dangerous situations, such as in a snowstorm. Protecting yourself (and society) from COVID works exactly the same way—you just can't see the snow.

Getting Infected is Not “Black and White”

A tiny number of virus organisms placed in the back of a person’s throat one time is not likely to lead to the average person getting “sick” with COVID. If we placed a tiny number of live viruses in the throats of 1,000 people, less than half would probably get sick. If we placed 1,000 or 1,000,000 viral organisms, the average person probably would get sick. And if we placed a tiny number of organisms 10 or 100 times in a week, the average person would also likely get sick because of the multiple exposures. This is because even in your throat, your body has protective countermeasures such as mucus and cilia and your blood and other fluids likewise have generic immune and other protections. They are just not as strong as we need them to be. Even as people get and recover from COVID or get a future vaccine, 100% of the population won't be 100% protected, but collectively we will be safe.

Your nose reduces the risk of viral particles getting to your throat. A mask reduces the risk of the viral particles getting to your nose, and social distancing reduces the risk of them getting to your mask. Together, these countermeasures work very well.

If your nose reduces the risk by 80% (see Caveat 1), and a mask by another 80% and the six-foot distance by 80% more, then collectively, the failure rate would be (0.2*0.2*0.2 = .008) = 0.8%. In other words, the collection of countermeasures would be (1 minus the failure rate) = over 99% effective in reducing your chances of getting sick. In this example, any two together would be 96% effective and any one alone would be 80% effective.

So based on this example calculation, if you are standing with your mouth closed and normally breathing close to a COVID carrier as they are speaking to you, you may have a 20% chance of getting sick from that exposure. Add a mask and that would go down to 4%, add distance and that goes to under 1%. Add repeated individual exposures from other people, and your risk gets worse. Add more countermeasures and your safety improves. The power of each individual countermeasure is much less important than their collective power in protecting you.

  19. I am not convinced either way, others suggest that the nose itself filters the virus in part, this is improved when wearing a mask, it’s clear not 100% but significantly less when a mask is worn, and it will also protect other if you are effected and wearing one. Perhaps that in it self is sufficient for the government to ask the public to wear them.

There’s  conflicting advice even from the medical profession, clearly a proper flitted mask would be the best option but obviously not everyone has access.

The removal and fitting or touching the mask with your hand that has previously been in contact with a contaminated area can then contaminated the mask and subsequently yourself, so Sanitise prior to fitting removing or touching it. Personally  I have no problem wearing one it asked.

Possibly not, but if we do need to defend our country or way of life and or the way of life of others. I am absolutely confident, the Government will be accused of lack of investment into all branches of the military and the opposition and media will be relentless.
