  1. Hi Cliff

I have an unopened container of Capt. Tolley's unique penetrating sealant described as a creeping crack cure which finds and fixes leaks. It is unopened so I have no idea if if works, may be miraculous or snake oil! When the rain stops I will give the TR2 a run and drop it in, no harm in trying it.

    Cheers

  2. I have a Jotul No. 3 stove, about 5Kw which works well in a 300 year old draughty farm house and currently restoring a Jotul 118 stove for the kitchen which takes 600mm logs which should save a lot of sawing. Having to make new baffles out of 1/4" steel plate but not sure how long they will last, new cast iron baffles available in the USA but suspect the postage would be crippling!

    Cheers

  3. Many years ago when funds were tight and batteries expensive I used to start the TR2 with the starting handle and its amazing how much the front panel flexed, the starting handle guide had the correct brackets. No wonder the front panels crack around the hole and I suspect the single bracket to the front apron would do little to prevent this, probably there to stop the lower part of the apron vibrating.

  4. I routinely put a fuse in the lighting circuit (in the main feed) having experienced shorting in the rear lights which means a long run of wiring is compromised. The original fusing on my TR2 was minimal which cannot be good. Better safe than sorry even if it is not original.

  5. I had a 1954 TR2 which was sold by Rossleighs to a school teacher in Stirling and given the Stirling registration GMS 410. While my current TR2 was built in 1954 but not registered until 1956, thought to have been owned by an American serviceman for 2 years and issued with a Q plate before being returned to the dealer and given a standard registration number.

    Cheers

  6.           Surely if the carbs, thermostat housing and fuel pump are all bolted on to the engine then they are all vibrating together. The pipe has lasted 70 years unlike rubbers pipes or rubber pipes hiding behind braided stainless steel mesh.

              Cheers

  7.           Try Footman James online you may be surprised. I was with Lancaster but an over 50% price hike lead me online to look around and I am still with Lancaster at the rate I paid last year! I thought this was against the insurance industry's regulations.

              Cheers

  8.           My TR2 has its original fuel pipe which is a solid pipe running from the fuel pump to the front carb via a clip on the thermostat housing then onto the rear carb so no rubber sections to deteriorate or unions to leak. I wonder why they changed?

  9.           I fitted a Daimler engine to a TR2 in the 1980s, the body was off which helped. I used a Dolomite Sprint gearbox which is basically a TR gearbox with a sandwich plate and longer input shaft but it was not really strong enough for the torque of the Daimler engine. If you can find a Jaguar 0/D gearbox with the rare Daimler bellhousing it is perfect for the job. More recently I fitted the Daimler engine to a Swallow Doretti which easier as it is slightly wider, about the same as a TR4, in both cases I used rack and pinion steering, a remote oil filter and Daimler Dart exhaust manifolds. The sump was  a cut down Daimler saloon sump, the Daimler Dart sump doesn't fit the saloon block and the dip stick is a fiddle, have just fitted an Audi A2 dip stick which works well.

The TR went to the south of France and the Doretti went to Le Mans a couple of times and did the TR Isles Tour to Shetland. It was a great conversion, the Doretti was sold to Phil Tucker who knows a few things about TRs. I am currently driving around in another Daimler engined Doretti which will be at the International W/E in June.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 Cheers Richard

  10. I have problems with my Light 15 engine, it went to Le Mans last summer from west of Glasgow without any difficulties but now water is getting into the oil, could be a wet liner problem or the head. Have yet to investigate but I could be in the market for a head.

    Cheers

  11. I think Healey were looking for a more powerful engine for the big Healey and BMC had plenty of 4 litre Rolls Royce engines lying around because the Vandenplas Princess wasn't selling well so the two were combined, not simple though as the Healey bodyshell was split down the middle and 4 inches added to the width. Only a couple were built as far as I know although more may have been built as specials, none were twin cam though.

  12. Hello Everyone and Happy New Year. My new year started with a bang from the starter motor! To recap I fitted an overdrive gearbox to my TR2 last year along with a later flywheel and starter motor, not a fan of the original cush drive starter motor. The starter motor went bang then it clattered and went quiet, it turns but doesn't engage. On investigation the starter gear had split in two so I wonder whether it was correct, it had 11 teeth. I have a couple of spare starters with 10 teeth so I wonder which is correct? Incidentally the starter I used was a Lucas M45G, not correct which explained the tight fit while the spares are the correct Lucas M418G.

    Roger,

AMAZING !  And, if you’re doing Jura… seems like Islay might also be an option ?  IMHO the whisky is better, especially my favourite Kilchoman … other whisky is available !

    Hopefully see you there.

    Stephen

I used to enjoy the robust Islay malts but have been seduced away by the milder Speyside whiskys. Jura, both as a whisky and a stoat is reputed to have a hint if seaweed in its taste although I have never noticed it. I have been to Ardnamurchan a number of times, the geology is fascinating but have yet to try a Kilchoan, a box that needs ticking. The nearest distillery to Doune is Deanston, well worth a visit, a good walk from the hillclimb although the return walk may be longer!

              Cheers Richard

  14. Hi Stephen

I am a simple soul and have trouble with modern technology if it is not obvious, like mystery QR boxes so thank you for taking the time to explain what is going on and I will certainly be there.

    Hi Mick

Thank you for the link to the Scottish TR weekend, it gave me relevant dates but the information was a straight copy of last summer's event, suspect we will not be celebrating the 1973 formation of the Clyde Valley Group again in 2024!

                 Cheers Richard

  15. I really enjoyed the Scottish TR Weekend with its mix of classic hillclimb, varied runs around the countryside and a static car show, the hill even echoed to the sound of a V8 Doretti when entrants were allowed a run up the hill between competitive runs. By this time last year the event was well publicised in TR Action and the entry due to open but this year there has not been much information although there is a QR box the mysteries of which I am unable to penetrate! Now is the time of year bookings are being made so more information is needed.

The associated legacy picture from an early Scottish Weekend shows the Old Codgers TR team (that was 40 years ago, what would we call ourselves now?) Cliff McKinnon is in the lead in his TR3, followed by me in my TR2 then Bill Pollock in his TR6 and we are all still TR owners although not necessarily the same cars.

    Cheers Richard

  16. Robsport International are having a clearing of old parts and I bought a new vacuum advance unit for my TR2, a rare find. It arrived and I gave it a suck and there was no vacuum, a duff unit. I returned it and received a quick refund which was good but if they had given it a check which took seconds it would have saved them time and effort and my return postage.

    Cheers Richard
