Mick - forgot to say the problem is radial faults, as though the casting was faulty. Will get thoughts from my friends down here and try and post a photo but close ups with the IPad are not too good. JJC

Thanks - that’s a workshop manual in its own right! I’ll get my expert friends to supervise. Will let you know what transpires. JJC
PS It took about 2 years I think and the FO8s are definitely corroded away

I had trouble with the engine on the 4. Water in the oil. The FO8 gaskets had failed, in fact corroded away. I have noticed that the bottom surface of the (new 2000 miles ago) liners is not ground perfectly flat. Didn’t notice this when I bought them not long ago. Do you think that was the cause of my troubles, or was it that I didn’t use enough Wellseal? JJC

Thanks all. I’ll report back when the engine bits are all inside the engine. JJC

Result! Made up a wood drift with Roger’s 18mm marked on it. Dressed along the capping a few times and it works. All these years of needing help to put it on and I did it single handed. Just need to rebuild the engine to test it at speed. JJC

Just measured under the lip. Nowhere more than 14mm and in places down to 10mm. Reshaping needed. Looks as though it needs reshaping at the upward facing bit just in front of the rivets. That is, not just bending the front up? I guess spacers might be easier. A washer glued on the rivet holes?JJC

Roger - brilliant advice by return. My capping isn’t exactly pristine so maybe that’s part of the problem. I’ll fight off the urge to go down the beach for a coffee in the glorious sunshine we’ve got at the moment and go back to the garage.
The car isn’t going anywhere right now see picture below, but maybe next week!

I’ll take another picture from above. Car sat for years in barns gently decaying away. The original soft Surrey was with it the screen and capping are as it came. But who knows? Need to find another 4 and have a look. Alternatively a measurement might solve it. Is it the front to back depth of the capping that’s different? JJC

Roger your pins look like a finger saver! JJC

Roger - many thanks for your very kind offer. I’ll p.m. you at some point. Meanwhile ................I tried the sequence as advised, starting at the front. I couldn’t get the rear fixings in despite slackening the frame. Admittedly it was cold so not flexible. Left it, maybe go back to it next week. In the garage this morning there it was sat like this. It’s a repro top, original metal strips and always has been tight. Very very difficult to fix the front. I have managed to put it on previous years but strength in fingers is declining. Any suggestions? JJC

Roger thanks I assume your adjusters are threaded internally onto the frame and that’s how you adjust them. JJC
-
Roger - thanks. I’ve always had to put the back in first because the top is just too tight. Never tri,ed pushing the frame to one side then the other. Will give it a whirl Have you posted a picture of your mod to the frame rear fixings? JJC

Roger - is there an optimum sequence for putting the top on? I usually put the back on first then struggle with that strip that goes under the capping. Quite often I just give up. JJC

Just looked at the FO8 seals I took out. After just a few years cylinder 4 had rusted through from the edge (causing the failure) and number 1 was about follow suit. I’m told the antifreeze probably wasn’t strong enough to inhibit corrosion. JJC

Mick - I think I’ve got your “how to sort it” post on my home screen! JJC

Roger thanks Well Seal is a favourite!
Tom - thanks, didn’t know about shims. Are they FO8 s in various thicknesses? That would be very useful. I was beginning to worry about skimming blocks and things like that. JJC
-
Roger Thanks - I think I’ll need the extra thickness. JJC
-
Are FO8 seals available other than the steel 16 thou and copper 18 thou listed in the Moss book? Interested in thicknesses JJC
-
Many thanks for posting that. Everything F1 isn’t. JJC

Just as a matter of (little) interest our 2 had the original Derrington extractor manifold. A thing of some beauty but after 50 years had too many pinholes. The manifold itself was thinner than standard so required the Derrington inlet manifold to go with it. Fortunately that’s still there too. I had a copy of the exhaust made up by a specialist in Wilton just outside Salisbury. The original is on my garage wall. JJC

That’s a relief! Back on the road with spare pump. Thanks for rapid reply. JJC
