  1. Ian - as Miles suggests going through Chichester could be an option, we find it often much quicker than the bypass even on non Goodwood days. I wasn't sure about getting in via Lavant as the routes from Petersfield or Midhurst often get clogged based on what I've been told. Coming South on the A3 then coming off at Horndean to go through Stansted/Rowlands Castle, Funtington and then Lavant could avoid main road queues, but some are narrow roads. Also as Miles says, Waze is a great navigation tool.

  2. Yes I would normally follow that route through Shrewton and then on through Larkhill to avoid the A303 at Stonehenge. I just felt that yesterday the 303 was very likely to be really busy along the whole length, then my usual route would be down the A34 to join the A272 at Winchester but again I thought the bottom of the A34 would be a bottleneck. Coming off at ~Andover to avoid that was another option. I do though tend to stay off the dual carriageways as much as possible in the TR when the roads are busy because although the TR is capable of keeping up in fast traffic it really isn't a pleasant experience in a 70mph traffic sandwich.

In terms of routes into Goodwood for the Revival then yes, definitely avoid the A27 around Chichester from the West. We're only 12 miles from Goodwood, slightly North and East, and our normal route is either the A27 from the East or if I think it's going to be really busy then we will use the back lanes through a village called Eartham to get in, but that doesn't really help you from your direction. I'm afraid I can't really advise on best 'rat runs' from the North/North West into the circuit but I'm sure there will be someone on here with thoughts.

It was good to see you on Saturday.

  3. Ian - it might have been me in the 2 with aeroscreens - very hardcore, or stupid - take your pick.

I'd set off for home at ~1.40pm yesterday and caught up with three 6's near Frome and followed them around the Warminster bypass and toward Salisbury where they peeled off left at Knook camp and I carried on to and through Salisbury and onto Stockbridge, Winchester, Midhurst and home just North of Arundel. I think the three 6's might nave been Thames Valley.

Did the ~110mile run in just under 3 hours (took 3hr 20m the the way on Friday) so was quite please with that. Going through places seems just as quick as using the A303/A34 or other 'main' routes.

  4. Jerry - as I posted on the other TR70 thread after Phil and others confirmed we enter via the Green gate as the main entrance is being used for the large flea market at the weekend:

This is the B&W Showground advice on gate location using what three words:

B&W Showground site web pages: https://www.bathandwest.com/royal-bath-and-west-show/visitors/getting-to-the-show

Every 3 meter square of the world has been given a unique combination of three words. Download the What3Words App to find the exact locations of each of our entrance gates:

    Main Gate (A371) – ///bowhead.irritated.button

    Blue Gate (A371) – ///cabin.sprouting.again

    Purple Gate (A371) – ///sprinkler.performed.requires

    Green Gate (A37) – ///sheep.simulations.fixed

I've greyed out the other gates. sheep.simulations.fixed gives a spot on/very near the entrance off the A37.  https://what3words.com/sheep.simulations.fixed

Very apt for an agricultural showground to have 'sheep' as one of the words. I'm a bit concerned that simulations is one of the other two!

  5. The RAC is a poor poor imitation of what it once was - sadly.

I posted back at the time (Malvern 2021) about our little Midget that packed up on the Sunday on the way home and had to be recovered - it took the RAC 26 and a half hours to get us and the car home. We broke down at 3pm just East of Tewksbury and the M5 junction there. Whilst waiting for the Patrolman I changed the points, and then the coil  in case it was one of those - it wasn't.

The patrolman arrived at 4pm which was pretty good, checked what I had done, swapped some of the components back, checked for a good spark etc etc.. He decided it was probably fuel related and arranged recovery.

We were left at 5pm at a non 24 hour BP and Starbucks just East of the M5. We didn't get picked up from there until 1am!

We were then taken to Oxford services where we waited from 2.40am to 10.15am!

Then we were taken to Cobham services where we waited from 11.35 to 16.05. We got back to Sussex and home at 17.25 on Monday! We had to do all the chasing, the RAC were atrocious at keeping us informed. No guessing that we didn't renew! We had been members for ~35 years thinking we were paying a premium rate for a premium service!

Their model now is to get the people home and then relay the car back at their convenience - OK possibly for a modern that can be secured, but not a classic car. Diana's cousin didn't see his van with all sorts of expensive cycling gear and bikes in it for 6 days after he broke down ~300 miles from their home.

  6. ..should there be any free movement of the arm before the damping effect is felt?

I've just taken delivery of a new damper (25% uprated) which, when I move the arm up and down, there is a small amount of free movement on the downward move before the resistance is felt. Before I go back to the supplier to ask, and/or fit the thing - I thought I'd ask on here for thoughts.

    Thanks

    Rod

  7. Thanks Iain, Bob and Pauline.

Had a very pleasant day - coffee and a pastry at the (Goodwood) Kennels this morning and a lovely walk along the River Arun to our favourite pub for lunch. Topped off with a very nice English Pinot Noir Rosé in the garden this evening.

    No TR/Stag/Midget activity today.

  8. Thanks again for all the thoughts and advice.

I've managed to do it today using a ~4½ inch length of plastic tube that was a fairly tight fit over the nipple end of the grease nipple and managing to drop/hold the nipple in place with the tube whilst turning with an open ended spanner.

  9. Hello Roger

I've tried a small socket on the straight nipple but it's such a tight space from below or above through the access hole in the tunnel - that it is very hard with my stubby fingers to hold it in place and turn it without dropping it onto the box section below and then scrabbling to get it back. I've tied some light string on to the nipple to stop it falling but I'm still struggling to hold it square on the 'hole' and get the thread to start

I though I might next try some stiff wire to hold it around the top of the nipple and in a way that a spanner can still be got onto the hex part and turn it.
