  1. Swapping to a spin-on filter is really easy, one spanner and a tray to catch the oil. And some cloths.

Getting the original filter housing out of the bay can be a fiddle, but it does come out!

Use a small sharp pointy stick to spear and remove the o-ring that seals the filter housing to the block. It's hiding in its own little circular home in the block. You will get a new one with the kit.

Your engine will thank you by not rattling when you start it up and lasting longer. (Instant oil pressure)

Filters can be either short or long, doesn't really matter if you change the oil regularly. Mount them pointing downwards.

Thanks for this Andy! Sounds like a job Dad and I should be able to tackle ourselves then. Let's hope we remember the tray or mum will kill us if we mess up the yard!

  2. Hi,

MOT is coming up in a couple of months and I'm trying to work out what I should look for so I can keep the TR on the road!

Brake master cylinder has just changed (previous one leaked).

The sills are probably pretty patchy, haven't looked for a while but the general condition of the car underneath has given me cause for worry. A bit of a rustbucket...

Speedo needs fixing (jammed stiff) and angle drive (broken) needs fixing/replacing. Are these checked during an MOT?

Tyres are new so all good there.

Right anti-roll bar link is cracked so needs replacing.

What other areas should I look at?

    Thanks!

PS: I've attached a nice pic one of friend's took with a Hasselblad, car's looking good!

  3. Money isn't exactly burning a hole in my pocket but there's enough of it for a spark or two so I'm working out a list of jobs I'd like done on my TR6. Most of this will be done by the kind chaps at Enginuity as I'm not very mechanically aware. Teaching myself the basics and learning but the big jobs still need to be done by pros with a workshop, not an amateur without a garage and with a limited tool collection.

The engine still has the original style oil filter, is there any point converting to a spin-on?

    Cheers!

  4. Unless someone gives you a better suggestion, why not use the owner's manual for reference? These are available cheap in repro form.

    Tom,

If my memory serves me correctly, the manual recommends a service every 6000miles. My concern is that this applies to a new car, not a 35yr old one. Should the interval between services be shorter if we take the advanced age of the car into consideration?

  5. Hi,

I've had my tr6 for 8mths now and I couldn't say how many miles I've covered as my speedo seized up pretty early on. Probably between 2000 and 3000. the car has successfully made several 400mile round trips to France and I've enjoyed the odd hour long blast up the motorway to Oxfordshire or Hertfordshire. But mostly the 6 has been in use in town for short drives (between 10 and 20mins), at least 3 times a week.

How often should I get the car serviced? I've heard a few horror stories about certain parts rubbing "raw" through lack of grease and I'm sure a little TLC wouldn't go amiss. I could also finally get my leaking brake master cylinder and clutch cylinder changed. No more fluid top-ups for me!

Btw, my 6 has always been reliable, even during the cold snap at the end of December and has always started apart from one time when the battery was flat. Using the car on a regular basis (it's my only car) does certainly help keep the car reliable but it's still heartbreaking taking it out in the wet. There is a helluva lot of rust under the paintwork but I'm hoping it will keep on going for the next 2-3yrs and then it will be full restoration time!

    Thanks,

    Eli
