  1. Having worked in the nuclear industry I can confirm that SS should not be used for stressed fastenings unless you are using some of the more exotic grades. And it is particularly susceptible to stress corrosion in salty environments.

Oh, and it is also susceptible to ‘picking up’ and seizing.

  2. FWIW,  For my front wings, I bought a bunch of 3mm stainless pop rivets and where the trim curves down around the front of the wings, I pop rivetted the tags to the inner face of the wing.  It means that its a fairly straightforward task to remove the front shroud because the trim stays attached to the wing.  I just loosen the bolts holding the wing to the inner panel and move it sideways enough to clear the trim from the shroud.  It also means you can get the trim nice and snug to the wing and it stays there.

Recently I had occasion to post a GoPro battery door in a small Jiffy bag. It weighed almost nothing but because it would not fit through the post box slot in the PO they charged me £4.61 for 1st class delivery. It took 10 days to arrive!  I also recently sent a 2kg parcel by Evri for £2.65 which arrived in 48 hours. How the Royal Mail is going to survive unless it sorts itself out is a mystery to me.

    Rodders.

The only problem with using Evri, is that if you aren't in when they deliver, they will throw it in front of the door and leave it there.  My son in law had a guitar delivered and they just threw it over the fence.  And I had a golf club delivered that arrived with a broken shaft.

Sounds perfectly acceptable to me, mine starts at 80 when cold and continues to work at 60 to 70 when hot depending on revs and drops to 20 on idle when really hot after a good run. Mine had new bearings 5000 miles ago.

Different oils can make a big difference, what are you using?

    Ralph

Mine is pretty much the same. I use Penrite Classic Light oil.

  5. It is possible to remove the propshaft without removing the tunnel. I know because I have done it. So if nothing else works and you don’t want to remove the tunnel you could try that. You need good selection of sockets and extensions along with suitable spanner to hold the nut.

  6. Ian,

Because we have a weak signal we need a dish and Sky box even though we only watch Freeview channels.

But……left over from when we lived in Devon, we have a Talktalk box that works a treat for watching iPlayer and other catch up apps. Ours was made by Huawei and you can pick them up very cheaply on eBay. They incorporate a hard disc for recording programmes and do not require you to have a Talktalk account. If you would like more details send me a PM.

PS you connect it to your broadband router via a couple of Powerline adapters.

  7. A bit after the event, but last Sunday we participated in the Mendip Vintage and Classic Tour organised by the Classic & Historic Motor Club.

We started from Puxton Park in Weston Super Mare and wound our way around the Mendips until we stopped for lunch at a hotel near Brent Knoll before wending our way to Wells where we parked on the Cathedral Green.  It was a very well organised event with 160 cars, the earliest of which was a 1924 Belsize and the most recent a 1992 Alfa Romeo Spider.  There were three sidescreen TRs along with one each TR4 / 4a and three TR6s.

Attached are just a few photos of the event.

  8. I’ve done it (twice) Iain and it’s not difficult as long as you are careful. The first time was to rebuild a 3.7 axle and the second to fit a 3.45.

the trickiest part is setting the depth of the pinion to within a thou.

I have an old Buick pinion setting gauge that picked up on eBay for not a lot and converted to work on a TR axle. It’s been on long term loan to another forumite for a while but if I can get it back you are welcome to borrow it.

Oh and read Pete Cox’s article on the Technicalities CD.

  9. No pics I'm afraid but I had a social function with old work colleagues near Plymouth yesterday and notwithstanding the forecast decided to take the TR.  A round trip of 230 miles and the return drive in sunshine (yes, sunshine), was a blast.  Not much traffic and the car ran like a dream.  It's so true that TRs benefit from a good long run at speed with fresh fuel to clear up any rough running.

I have found that this oil filter removal tool does the job admirably:

    But thanks anyway

Good that you have found a use for it as they are no good for screw in oil filters on TRs - at least the one I  have doesn't work on my TR3a, the chassis rails get in the way.
