  1. If Tony has made it then it will be good & will fit. Alternatively leave it off & have the lip painted well. When my car was restored the rear strip was not available but I had a nice spray job on the hardtop that included the lip & it looks fine without a strip. Hardly ever use the hardtop so have not justified a ‘Tony’ strip but would go that way if I were to use it more.

    Hi Monty

When it is done properly it makes a big difference. Like all of this, so much depends on how good the prep work is. I've used GTECHNIQ products for years and when my partner bought a fairly new Range Rover Velar from a main dealer the paint was atrocious. I took it up to their HQ for 5 days and it was transformed. It make the daily care so much easier as well with washing quicker and easier. No connection to them just like what their products do, but yes it is not cheap. They have some background info on their site - https://www.gtechniq.co.uk/about-us/

    Hi Cotswoldiver,

    Have you treated your TR?

  3. Has anyone have any experience of professional paint treatment to remove any swirl marks/defects etc. followed by ceramic coating to further protect? I have been offered a trial treatment on a small area of the TR to see the difference. Not a cheap procedure but some results I have seen are quite impressive.

Very Nice Conrad, and well done on getting her on the road to be useble and enjoyable ready for the springtime.

As an aside, I was interested to see the shape of your door glass and how it appears to more suddenly drop off at the top back corner. Mine own car's are wrong as it has TR6 door glass (..as was the hood n' frame) with a rounder top curve and less of a drop at that back corner.  Thanks for that.

    Best regards, Pete

Pete, I was told many years ago that TR4A glass is slightly different in shape to that of a TR5. When my 4A was restored, again several years ago, it was fitted with TR5 door glass as 4A was not available.

I too bought mine off Black Circle, but as my car was at TRGB for an engine rebuild I had them shipped to them and they fitted them for me.  Michelin tubes. Not sure what garages locally have the cones for balancing wire wheels, if using solid wheels, then I have had good treatment at John Wood Tyres in Hereford

Actually Blockley tyres have the correct cones for balancing wires or centre lock Minilite type wheels. Bought my T Tracs online & took them to Blockley for fitting & balance. Reasonable price charged.

    Hi Mark,

there aren't many places to fit a warning light without making holes etc.

If you have to look at a warning light to see that you are in OD then surely a quick glance at the rev counter would do the same.

In 4th gear the speedo and tacho needles point in the same direction.

In 4th OD the tacho needle is slightly anticlockwise.

    Roger

Put a warning light for the O/D & another for the cooling fan in the plastic ashtray cover. Careful drilling & wire manipulation gave a neat job. Don’t smoke so no need for the normal ashtray use!

I was watching the Matthewsons television programme the other night....Yeah, I know! Actually, I am not keen on the programme (watch the episode where they try and explain the cogs in the Daffodil drive train to get an idea) but it does show interesting cars and it's a good cure for insomnia! To be honest, I'm not even keen on buying or selling cars at auction. I like to actually test a vehicle, meet and get a feel for the owner and how they have treated it etc. I've even refused to sell to someone because I didn't like their plans!

Anyway, I digress. The episode I was watching was one where what can loosely be said to be the rotting carcass of a mini cooper went for £18,000 and they were all saying that when it was restored (like Trigger's broom) it would be worth £60,000.

Now, is it just me? I absolutely abhore the "what's it worth?" idea. For me, something is worth what joy etc. it brings to the owner. Perhaps the phrase "What money will it make?" is a far better description of many of today's classic car deals.

It is worth what somebody will pay for it on the day I think. Certainly a restored genuine Cooper S will get interested buyers willing to pay £60,000+ for it, mad as it sounds. A friend of mine has probably the most original ex-works Cooper S that has survived (car was put into storage with many original panels etc & discovered by him) & using your phrase of “What money will it make?”, well over £100,000 probably! For a Mini!

Apparently there has been minimal contribution from wind and solar!

As an aside, friends have just installed solar panels. To my surprise, once their battery is full, they get no credit for what then flows into the grid. They have calculated it will take 17 years to recoup their investment even with todays prices. Assuming this is correct, doesn’t seem to be much incentive to go solar.

Just down the road there is a huge solar farm that has appeared during the past couple of years or so. Who is getting the benefit heaven knows, certainly no decrease in bills of any sort for us! Maybe it is the lucky farmer who sold his field(s) for it! Recently worked out a rough costing for solar panels (assuming planning permission granted in our conservation area) & it gave me a figure of at least 10 years to recoup! No incentive I am afraid!

Such a relief to read that Stuart. I thought it was just me!

Always loved the look of the big Healey and the idea of 6 cylinders. Couple of years ago I got the chance to drive a friends very expensive, late model as I was starting to seriously think about buying one. I was absolutely gutted. As you say, it drove like a lorry (or even a tank!). My humble 3A was so much better to drive. So got the wind up windows, better handling and 6 cylinders (as well as copious support here) by buying a 6 for way less money.

I had a very similar experience a few years ago. Found a lovely looking freshly restored late 3000 that I thought I wanted but it meant selling the 4A for funds. Decided to hire one for a day to see how I liked it & actually handed it back a little early as I was disappointed & could not bear to part with the TR!

Whitewalls are HORRIBLE - but that's just my opinion, of course.

    Ian Cornish

Agreed. My 4A went new to California with whitewall tyres! Thank goodness it came home to be restored that included non whitewalls!

  11. I did find that Blockley tyres were quite pricey a couple of years ago when I needed to replace all round, so went for Vredstein as my mileage is only around 2000 or so a year these days. Tyres tend to crack etc before the tread wears! Happy with the Vreds.

I thought there was legislation passed this year that outlawed the motorway services charging way over prices? After all, petrol lorries go up and down the motorways all the time should see services be cheaper IMNSHO..

Quite agree Steve but don’t think it works like that. I am always surprised that our ‘motoring organisations’ never seem to take an interest & make some kind of noise regarding fuel prices.

  13. I am awaiting a reply from Octopus to see what they can offer us. For years our problem has been getting a suitable tariff that gives us a cheaper boost of heating energy during the afternoon period to warm the house for the evening. SSE have been the only supplier offering the Superdeal tariff that works in that way, so no competition for our custom! I thought monopolies were dead & buried but not in the energy market! Coincidently @ a Christmas gathering last night I found out that one of our village neighbours was having problems with SSE who were demanding £900 a month for supply to their property when their actual usage was a 1/3rd of that! Estimated bills from SSE have always been a problem for us but our neighbours situation is ridiculous. The energy market needs complete overhaul in my view!
