At the Holland 50 weekend Ton from the dutch group changed my starter exactly that way. I was starting to remove the carbs when he said no need and then set about fitting it.

Also a 6 had its starter changed the next day.  had to remove the plenham.

    Roy

Roy, was it removed from underneath of the engine compartment or up from the inside past the carbs with enough clearance from the exhaust manifold?

Not a lot - 5 minutes on the bench/kitchen table. Just make sure you retighten everything up nice and tight!

The carburettors will have to come off though, alas

    james

On my 4A it looks more likely that the starter motor will foul the exhaust manifold rather than the carbs (maybe the air cleaners may need removal though). Are you referring to a TR3 James?

The starter motor operates in a pretty tough environment and the business parts last nearly for ever. As you say that both bolts are only loose and still in place, the alignment has been more or less maintained. I would thus take an optimistic outlook. But do have a very good look as suggested above.

Yes, on my 3A, the top nut is a pain to get at, even when on a hoist, but it can be done from behind with a wobbly and an extension - without a hoist. A jack and axle stands suffice.

I fail to understand why the manufacturers of these gizmos all seem to insist on fitting a fixed stud/bolt on the top as it is impossible to turn a spanner on the nut behind the bell housing.

I have a Powerlite and with their agreement, turned the adaptor plate through 180° so that the ‘loose’ bolt is on the top and is easily turned while the nut can be held with a spanner as per the Joe Lucas item. The nut on the fixed stud, now below, is easy to get at, again without a hoist

But you will have to get it out to do this worthwhile modification!

    Good luck

Thanks for that tip James. What is involved in changing that adaptor through 180 on the Powerlite after removal?

Have a look at the starters pinion cog for damage.  And peer into the hole at the flywheel ring turning the engine with plugs out. If it’s ok  just refit with good new nyloc so it doesn’t come loose again.

Thanks for that Hamish. Cannot get the car on to a ramp until next week so worry has crept in! Is it more likely than not that damage may have occurred to the pinion cog or flywheel ring?

    Stuart.

Very true Stuart! There is an area in Cirencester called Watermoor. What did they do? Built a Tesco & an Aldi on it amongst others & wonder why it floods! Planning madness.

High torque starter motor has recently started to sound a bit odd & rather noisy on using. Today after a run it finally failed to start. I have just noticed that both retaining bolts are very loose & the unit can be rocked by hand. Is it hopeful that just the 2 bolts need retightening or could something have been damaged when starting the engine as the bolts were getting looser? Now need a tow to my local garage as the bolts, especially the top one, look very inaccessible without a hoist.

I’ve had that email if it’s a marketing tool it’s worked as I’ve just ordered a part I’ve been thinking about for months

Don’t think it is a marketing tool Hamish. Rather sad & worrying if it means we may have to suffer an increase of cheap & nasty parts if Revington no longer will supply what we might require.

Its simply a cash generation scheme to prop up a corrupt woke council which I'm sure all the other political self serving councils up and down the land will be looking at implementing to steal as much money as they can from folk. While the actual technology is run by third party contractors who no doubt will have greased a few palms to act for the council for a percentage of the spoils.

So when they have forced off the road all the "nasty cars" and no-one is wanting to work in these so called vibrant city centres which will become deserts then yes no one will be dying of so called air pollution related disease because they won't be there. The often totted out death rates I suspect are satirically massaged figures - The truth is the air has never since the 1950's being as clean. Plus when the first round of dirty cars have gone next will be any petrol/diesel followed by electric to pay for all that extra pollution used to generate the electric in the first place and dispose of the mountain of lithium batteries which they can always burn without too much bother.

Me I won't be paying if I'm ever put in the position to or visit places where it applies now. They can't jail everyone but then I suppose we could be housed in hotels,  more fashionable tents or even a house boat with a sea view!

This country has gone to the dogs and a soft touch for every lunatic that gets their hands on the levers of power - where are all the true inspirational politicians and leaders gone with common sense and judgement? No doubt hiding as they are too frightened and gagged by the establishment in fear of the woke minority who have quietly with media support taken over key areas so they can inflict their half baked ideology. The main stream parties don't want now you unless you fulfil the current warped woke agenda!

That's why the silent working majority have little to vote for and why Khan and his ilk are doing what they are doing. Time for a change I think.

    Andy

Oh how true your comments are Andy. A broken Country that upsets me every day. Run by useless, often corrupt & cheating politicians, woeful Mayors & the like. I am so glad my age meant I was born just after the war, my youth being in the wonderful 60’s with its great music etc. The UK is in a mess & there appear to be no more great leaders to save it.

I agree with Andy just be careful what and who you buy from, I had charging problems on my Avenger rally car. I am lucky there is a old fashion auto electrician (knows what hes doing and what he is talking about) lives in the next town. He checked the alternator and said I needed a new one. He showed me whilst I stood next to the car. He said you have 2 choices you can go down the road and buy from a major motor factors it will cost you approx £50.00 and be back to see me in 3 months as a guy with a escort did with none charging problems again, when the new alternator of the escort  was stripped it fell in bits and full of chinese parts !!! or I will build you one uprated from 40 to 70 amps using quality parts it will cost you £75.00 you choose. It never missed a beat even running electric fuel pumps a big electric fan heater lights and spotlights at the same time. When I convert my car from Dynamo to alternator I will be going back to see him. If you buy of ebay scroll down even if it says a British company and right at the bottom of the add it will probably give you some unpronounceable name and address in China. What did Henry Ford say. Buy cheap and you will probably but twice.

Very true Phil! There are many things out there that are cheap & nasty & it really annoys me that they try & hide the fact the item is originating from China. Been caught a couple of times like that when missing the Chinese connection, fortunately not on anything expensive. Some car items are so much junk & we have to be very wary of EBay sometimes. Spending a bit more is often better.

Find the wire which goes to the horn button, disconnect it and then connect it to a switch mounted wherever suits you.  If wire not long enough, solder or crimp an extension, making sure that it cannot accidentally earth itself!

From the other side of the switch, run a wire to earth - the screw connections on the hood covering the switches for trafficators or overdrive switch should provide a convenient earth.

The photo is of my 2 switches on the right of the column - the upper is for logic overdrive (needs movement of just a very few millimetres in any direction), the lower is for the horn.

The pair are mounted on a short length of perforated steel strip, which one can find at Wickes or a motorist's shop.

On my TR4 with woodrim wheel,  I gave up decades ago with horn blowing or not as it wished.

As the Comps Dept didn't fit the long wand overdrive switch to the Works' TR4s (they used the TR2/3 overdrive switch mounted on the dash), I mounted a lever switch on the righthand side of the steering column to operate the horn.

And when I installed Revington's logic overdrive, with a small piece of bracketry, I managed to fit this switch alongside the horn switch, but at a different angle of dangle.

    Ian Cornish

Mine is still playing up with intermittent operation! What would I need to do to wire in a separate switch like yours Ian? What wiring would I need? Thanks.

When I read the first message in this thread I expected some comments, but nowhere near what I saw, so I thought that I would add my own experience of calling the RAC on 1st July this year. (2023).

I was returning home from my niece's wedding in Blagdon (Chew Valley Somerset), and at just after midnight and just North of Bristol Airport on the A38, as I entered a roundabout, the person in front of me stopped for no apparent reason and despite braking hard, I rear ended him. Totally my fault I should have checked a second time. The damage to my VW Golf is not good. I went under his rear bumper and his car suffered minimal damage. (The trim on his bumper had been partially loosened, and he was able to drive away without a problem). No one was hurt since it was a slow speed impact, but the VW 's radiator was damaged and leaking. The impact had pushed the bonnet and passenger wing back which meant the passenger door was unable to open more than a couple of inches. I called the RAC and they said. "We provide breakdown recovery, but not accident recovery. If you want to be recovered, it is at your cost." I explained that my wife is disabled and that she is unable to walk unaided so a recovery is the only possibility, and that I couldn't open the passenger door beyond an inch or two. After various discussions they agreed to recover us (still at my cost and they would send a recovery vehicle estimated at 45 minutes from then. They then called me back about an hour later to say the recovery vehicle was delayed and they could arrange a taxi to take us home (100+ miles), and that I could leave the car with the key on the front tyre. I pointed out that I had an electric wheelchair in the car, a rollator, various bags and shoes and ramps and all sorts of stuff, and my wife was unable to walk unaided, and I was not leaving this until the recovery vehicle turned up. They said they would arrange for the taxi and the recovery vehicle to arrive at the same time, which in fairness they did. At 3:30 am. The taxi (Uber) was a Prius Hybrid and only had room for the buggy, and a bag. I had to kick the passenger wing and wrench the door to get it open far enough for my wife to climb out. Almost everything else had to left in our damaged car. They had assured me the car would be securely stored overnight and returned to our home the following day. Once the car was on the recovery truck, I was not allowed to retrieve any further items. Now my daughter was due to be married near my home a week later and she had returned from New Zealand where she lives a few days previously, and we had arranged for her to drive our other car. The sandals that my wife had spent months choosing were in the damaged car. I was not permitted to get them. As you can imagine we were not best pleased. The taxi got us home close to 05:30 and we slept for a few hours, but did the car arrive that day. Not a chance. I called RAC and they said you need to speak to the recovery contractor. I called them and the person I spoke to said. "We use multiple contract recovery people, and once the car is in secure storage it will be looked after." I explained the situation and the response I got was "I can only tell you what I have written in front of me. The car will be returned to you sometime this week." My insurance company was jumping up and down asking to check the car and I explained that it had not yet been returned. "Where is it?" they asked, "because we can't release it until it has been assessed." I have no idea I said. no one has told me where it is other than in secure storage. I called the RAC and they said you need to speak to the recovery contractor and gave the same number as previously. I called them and the person repeated the same thing as before. "I can only tell you what I have written in front of me. The car will be returned to you sometime this week.". But where is it stored I asked because the insurance company need to assess it prior to releasing it. "I can only tell you what I have written in front of me. The car will be returned to you sometime this week." It was a stressful few days. We didn't know where the car was. It had stuff we needed, and The insurance company were chasing us regularly. On Thursday a man rang my doorbell and said. "where do you want your car?" It was on the back of his truck. It was driveable, but not legal, and the radiator was damaged from the crash. I said on the drive. which he did. Then he was gone. I then was able to tell the insurance company and they said they would get someone out to assess it. When I consider all the stress that I felt and then the bigger level of stress that my wife must have been under, I will not renew my RAC membership, but I think the AA and many of the other breakdown and recovery companies are much the same. They don't care a damn for the customer. As mentioned earlier in this thread RAC, AA, Green flag etc don't do anything themselves, they are just middle men and the contractors are so busy that no-one has time to find out what the customer wants. So I think there is an opportunity in the market for a recovery service that treats customers with respect. And if there is one. I'd like to know how to get hold of them.

This is the second instance where we have heard the RAC suggesting to the person who has broken down to ‘leave the key on the wheel’! Absolutely appalling & I wonder what the insurance company thinks of that risk!

  14. Just had a reply from my insurers Hagerty & they are surprised to hear of these poor RAC responses as their records show the performance details overall to be very similar to the likes of Green Flag, AA & others. They do assure me that the situation is monitored & although they may have the odd delay nothing as extreme as we have been hearing has occurred with any of their clients. They did mention a big recruitment drive by the RAC for staff in order to reduce any outsourcing. The offer is apparently around £50k per annum with bonuses so maybe that will attract! I guess we will just need to see how things progress.

Of course it varies, but here in France I have had outstanding service from my insurance company.

Breakdown on motorway with trailer and classic . Collected quickly. Garage could not put the trailer inside a locked compound; Insurance company agreed for it to go to another. A night in a hotel, taxi hotel to garage . A friend came up to collect me  and  the trailer. He was reimbursed for his fuel. When the car was repaired I had a train ticket and taxi from station to garage.

Another breakdown with empty trailer on the motorway on the way to the south of France to buy a car. Collected and taken to garage; Taxi to town to collect a hire car where we continued to the south and saw the car. Return in hire car which was left locally. Train back to collect car and taxi to garage. They had not found the fault. I spoke to the insurance company before setting out and they said, don't worry if it breaks down again we will start a new dossier.

    Happy Bunny here.

Yes there are many better things in France!

It would seem all recovery companies are the same. Our cars are insured through Heritage/Norton who use ALP recovery service. My wife and daughter (5 months pregnant) recently broke down on the M6 toll. Phoned recovery ate 4.30 and they turned up within 1.4 hours, good, but they only took her a couple of miles to the services and left her there. A couple of hours later another truck arrives and takes them to Sanbach on the M6 they arrives there at 1030. Despite numerous phone calls throughout the night they were not picked up till 5.30 next morning, arriving home at 7.30am. It will be Heritages loss as I will insure my 7 cars with someone else.

I suspected that somebody would quote poor response from another breakdown company other than the RAC so no surprise there.

Phil, have you contacted Heritage to get their response & comments? I & probably others would like to hear what their thoughts might be. My response from Hagerty has been negligible with no reply all week so will try to get a comment next week from them.
