  1. As you will recall Rich we have had a couple of chats & dealings & I am surprised that Stratford was a disappointment. Quite frankly I thought the event could have been better & I found it all a bit disjointed  & I have to confess I missed your stall & would have liked to have introduced myself in person. I never did find TR Enterprises who were listed in the programme! Were you listed? You are on my list of suppliers & when required again I shall be in touch but in the meantime keep going! You know how I feel about some of the junk we sometimes find ourself with but of course some people are happy to pay cheap & accept it. Good luck.

  2. Spend the most you need to on the chain. No point fitting cheap Chinese or Indian junk. I would also put a new quality oil seal in anyway while you have everything apart. Having said all that the seal on mine is seeping again despite all being replaced only a few thousand miles ago!

They are not lying and neither am I!!!!!

you will find that they will put E5 on all the Unleaded grades, this will be to cover them in the event that they have to pick up from another (non Esso Terminal) in the vent of supply Issues from their  regular terminals, Oil companies some times do exchange deals so it may be from time to time the service station gets a delivery from say a BP or Shell ect.Terminal

I have had the conversation with them about advertising the fact that their  UL97 is Ethanol free that has come out of one of there Terminals, but as they can not 100% Guarantee  the fact as stated from above they will not do this, this will be down to the fact that they could then be taken to account if they had taken delivery from a NON ESSO Terminal ( in this now crazy blame culture we live in) I understand why. Hence the reason for not publishing the list that we all would indeed find helpful

I hope this makes things little clearer

So they are just misleading their customers! The previously quoted Esso website stated that Synergy Supreme 97 contains no ethanol unless it is obtained in Devon, Cornwall, Teeside or Scotland. In Cirencester that Supreme 97 is marked E5. To me that is confusing & misleading! Sorry.

Many thanks Andy for all the above tips and guidance, I'm looking forward to it even more now. My mate has now booked the ferry from Lymington on the 6th September and returning on the 10th. He has a hotel reservation in Cowes but is still looking  at alternatives. I'll pass on your post - are you sure you do not work for the tourist board ? I'll take a hard copy with me and take in as much as time allows and certainly look up the watering holes. Your efforts are much appreciated.  Enjoy yourself on the Continent.

Thanks Monty I will try and checkout the Royal hotel in Ventnor and I'll make sure I take my credit card.

    Thanks and regards

Hi Monty, thanks - yes, same here - congealed grease on rack as well as gearbox. Is your profile picture an AA5A? passed my ppl in one of those many years ago.

No it's my friends Jodel Sicile. We have had may adventures with it including a weekend in Germany a few years ago. Lovely little vintage aircraft.

  6. My wiper stopped a few months ago. Took the motor out, bench tested & it was fine. Thought it would then be the wheel boxes & the nightmare of getting to them but it turned out to be the rack was full of congealed grease. Rack out, cleaned & re-greased. Not sure what grease my repairer used but they restore & service many top classic cars as well as TR's so I am sure they used good stuff.

    Hi Richard,

According to Esso’s website they say there is no ethanol in Synergie Supreme+ except in parts of Devon, Cornwall, Teeside and Scotland as per the extract below:

“The majority of unleaded 95 Octane petrol sold in the UK contains up to 5% ethanol as required under the Government’s Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation (RTFO).

There is currently no requirement for renewable fuel (such as ethanol) to be present in super unleaded (97 grade petrol).

Esso super unleaded petrol (Synergy Supreme+ Unleaded 97) is ethanol free (except in Devon, Cornwall, the Teesside area and Scotland). We would therefore advise anyone who has concerns about the presence of ethanol in petrol to use Synergy Supreme+ – providing they do not fill up in Devon or Cornwall, the Teesside area or Scotland.”

So, apart from the areas mentioned you should be able to get ethanol free petrol on the sites listed on the app - provided they are telling the truth of course !

Stopped at an Esso garage near Cirencester yesterday & all the petrol pumps including the Synergy 97 were marked E5! First time I have noticed this marking in UK & I can assure you that Cirencester is nowhere near Devon, Cornwall, Teeside or Scotland! I think Esso's attitude regarding not putting out a list online smacks of misleading information! Wouldn't believe a word they say!

  8. I agree Chris. Once a year I get an MOT @ my classic friendly local garage, he does all the grease points @ the same time, checks the gearbox & axle levels & I wander underneath with my Waxoyl can! He often charges only for the MOT!

Agreed Monty but I have had conversations with people who have been unhappy with Racetorations products / services.  Previous products that I have had from TR Shop have been good. In the end you pay your money and take your choice.  If it doesn't work I'll resurrect this post.  And once again many thanks for pointing me in a different direction.

Whatever you decide Ian, all the best.

Many thanks for the helpful comments.  With regard to the solid copper head gasket, there seem to be two schools of thought, one says they are only good for engines that are stripped down regularly - i.e Racing, and there are at least two users on here who have no problems with them.

Because I don't want to have to remove the head again - it has already been off twice in the last 12 months, I have opted for what looks the safer option of an expensive composite gasket that will suit up to 89mm bores and should fit my liners.  I haven't however gone for the Racetorations version as TR Shop are offering a similar item at £90 instead of £138 with an undertaking that they will provide a refund (minus postage) if it doesn't fit.

I'll let you all know how I get on.

    Rgds Ian

PS What's the view on using sealants with this type of composite gasket.  Does the fact that they have silicon beads around them mean that sealant is unnecessary?

I would be paying the extra small amount (in the scheme of things) of cash for the Racetorations product. These people have raced & rallied these cars with success so should know a thing or to about their product. Do you know where the TR Shop originates from?

Recommended for Tr2-3,  top up at 6,000 and drain and replace at 12,000 miles.

For me I drain/replace at 6000 miles. What price reliability? Approx £15 plus some rolling around under the car :D

It is not the cost, just the inconvenience, lack of home facilities & the disinclination @ 73 to crawl under the car! Does modern quality correct gearbox oil deteriorate in 6 years or 6000 miles is the real conundrum.

It does to an extent depend on what oil your gearbox is filled with. Standard 40 monograde gearbox oil should last a long time.

if it has been filled with multigrade oil, particularly 20/50 engine oil then annual changes might be considered as the additive packages & viscosity enhancers can be sheared by the gears and thus have a relatively short life in a gearbox application.

Always been filled with Penrite Gear 40. The last change showed clean oil & neglible deposits on the overdrive filters.

  13. What are people's thoughts on the oil change intervals for a gearbox with J type overdrive. It was 6 years ago when I last did a change but only 6000 miles since. Should I change due to the time or not bother yet because of the low mileage. Another conundrum for cars that cover low mileages!
