  1. We replaced an old Morso Squirrel last year for various reasons & bought a new Danish model which we are very pleased with but beware of recent regulations in regard to distances from floors & walls etc, chimney lining & heaven knows what as it is a minefield these days with regard to wood burners. Some chimney sweeps in our area will not go near them unless the specs. are absolutely perfect!

  2. Haven’t had much luck with an oil cooler on a TR! Had one on my TR4 fitted by the previous owner & on one of its first runs with me a stone or something punctured it & I lost all the oil over Witney shopping arcade during a classic car run!

I currently use (and have done for a while since VR1 prices escalated rapidly) Classic Oils Heritage mineral 20/50, still very competitively priced and the Zn as ZDDP stated correctly, but there is a shipping charge if spending less than £75 now (buying a 20l drum is even better value and free shipping)

    …… Andy

That is what I use now that Millers 20/50 has got expensive. Usually I collect it from the Classic Oils stand @ Kop Hill.

I know, I know, this has been covered many times and during my complete 4a restoration I looked into this in some detail; but Forum searches didn't provide an answer. A fellow member offered me a set of 15x6" KN Minators in as new condition for little money, so that decided it. After 2 years of running I'm happy with the general handling/comfort of the wheels with 195/65/15 Vredstien T Trac2s, except for the slow speed manoeuvring/parking which is hard work (obvs). So my question is; how much difference to this would switching to 5 1/2"  rims make with the same tyres. I understand that the tyre profile is also creating greater ground contact and therefore more friction, but would a narrower rim make a noticeable difference?

    Many thanks

    David

I think you will only notice any real slight difference if you change both the wheels & tyres to a narrower configuration.

Mike - I think that if you take off rapidly in 1st gear, there's a chance that the cover on the leading filter will hit the inner wing.  This happened a few times in 4VC until

I devised an engine restraint (see TR Action 130, Technicalities CD Section G15-G19) to prevent this.

Use the cut away version on the front carb.

    Hi Folks,

just as an aside, I have the largish round K&N filters on my 4A and found that under certain running conditions the front one would hit the wheel arch.

Looking at various wheel arch shapes I decided to indent the wheel arch - this was surprisingly simple.

A firm bash or two with a round headed rubber mallet produced what I was after.  Job done.

    Roger

One of K & N’s has a cutout to avoid the wheel arch. Fitted by the previous owner so I did not have to take Roger’s action!

I met Lord Sutch several times when I worked for Chas and Dave as he was a good mate of theirs, always an entertaining bloke.Put it like this any candidate has to better than any of the main parties. Thing is we arent allowed to get political on here so best leave it at that now.

Saw Screaming Lord Sutch & the Savages in the sixties @ the Trade Union hall in Watford. Good entertainment to us teenagers!

Hi folks, some interesting comments here but for the plodders like me who rarely feel much in the way of over or understeer it's the appalling road surfaces that dominate the pleasure in driving the car. Too high and one's fillings come loose due to potholes - too low and slushy feel to the car.

Bog standard suspension and 28 all round was wonderful on the generally fine Spanish road surfaces. Here in Essex 24 all round helps the ride on our awful pot holed roads

    Regards. John Mellor

Very much agree John! Not much better here in Gloucestershire! My classic driving day is often spoilt by the disgraceful road surfaces & am sure the car would be used a bit more given decent surfaces. I guess we just have to grin & bear it but the god awful politicians will be about shortly promising pot hole repairs no doubt as they did last time in the local elections! Back to tyre pressures I use 24 on the fronts & 26 on the rears. Minilite 5.5 wheels with 195/65 tyres on my 4A.

At the risk of inviting trouble…..I have been using Fernox Alphi ll for the last couple of years and at the moment everything seems good.  The coolant (50/50) is still crystal clear, the engine temperature when running stays where it should even in very hot weather and to date I haven’t needed to top the system up. Long May it continue.

    Rgds Ian

Same as my situation. Drain rad every couple of years or so, flush through with distilled water & refill with water & Bluecol 50/50 & all appears to run well with a pale blue colour in the rad!

  10. That will be a shame if it goes for scrap. I have fond memories of Beverleys during my Air Training Corps days in the sixties. My very first flight was in a Beverley @ RAF Thorney Island around 1963/4 when nearly all the cadets were airsick due to that tail moving up & down in flight! A glutton for punishment we flew in them (probably XB259 itself) on parachute drops & night flights from RAF Abingdon. By then my airsickness had disappeared! I will be sending a donation.

  11. Lots of fake NGK plugs around along with other rubbish from China or wherever. I have just bought a good set of NGK BP6HS from The Green Spark Plug Co. so hope they will be fine. Ian is very correct about modern petrol. I definately think it goes stale after a month or so as my 4A takes a couple of attempts before it starts, after a month or so in my garage. Other times usually starts first time.

Cambfollowers used to attend the Kimbolton summer fair, then last year the organisers imposed a £15 fee to show your car. The show was normally very good with loads of different cars but last year it was about 30% down and a bit disappointing so this year we have removed it from our calendar. It's a shame but there are other shows on the same weekend and most likely they will be better as most owners will not go to Kimbolton.

What irritated some of our group who had come alone in their cars, was after pre-paying £15 to show their cars they found that if they had parked in the public carpark they could have got in for £12..

    George

That is similar to my experience George. £25 for classic car owners to help put on the Show & £20 for general public entry! Seems odd to me so will not attend.

It makes the £20 /day early bird ticket for the Inter club International sound like a bargain. Hope you've all bought yours.

    Dave

Still £40 a day for the 2 of us & £80 if we cannot commit early!

I agree with Rob, a downright liberty . If they charge £25 to show your car what are they charging the public? . Don't they understand no cars no show.

    Bri

Just had another invitation to an event charging £25 to enter with general public paying £20! Cannot really see the logic of charging more for the people helping to put on the Show by attending with their classics! Shall not be attending!

    Hello Monty,

Dates and venues have not been set for 2024 yet but they usually have a dozen or so meets in the summer, at various places, their main venue being Spetchley park.

There are usually 3 or 4 Trs there plus the occasional Peerless (belonging to Nigel)

It’s a good idea to sign up their news letter. No pointless spam, just reminders of the next date and venue.

Thanks Charlie, will be there @ some stage I am sure.

    Monty,

You may well know about it, but if not, and you are looking for a reasonably priced regular meeting not too far from you (In Worcester) try “Wheels on Wednesday” (They also have Sunday morning meetings) . I’ve been going for a few years now and it’s full of friendly people and loads of cars, quality coffee and food stalls, all for £5.50 (or it was last year.)

There’s usually 100-150 cars on show plus about as may members of the public.

I think it is a commercial enterprise, but at a reasonable price, and I don’t begrudge the organisers for making a profit.

    £25 though seems greedy.

Thanks Charlie, we would be up for that. Whereabouts exactly & dates?

  17. Just had an invitation to a village classic car show that has returned after a couple of years absence due to Covid etc. It used to be a fiver in the bucket for attendance & charity but with new organisers they are now asking for £25 entry! I am all for charity but think that the new ‘price’ is a bit steep during these challenging times? What do others think? I believe the entry includes a coffee for driver & passenger(s) but I object a little to this kind of pricing to show one’s car & help put on a Show. I think the new organisers believe that anybody owning a classic car has a large budget with oodles of spare cash. Think I will stick to the breakfast gatherings or small events that ask for £5 or £10 in the charity bucket that attract good numbers of interesting cars in a nice setting!

  18. Stuart is absolutely correct David. I have a 4A restored some years ago when 4A glass was unavailable, hence TR5 glass was fitted.
I have kept mine with the TR5 glass fitted as it fits quite well with no water ingress.

  19. Has anybody any ideas or suggestions on how on earth do you replace one of these? Mine is attached with 2 screws with the top one accessible but the lower one appears impossible to get a screwdriver on it due to the heating hoses & steering column in the way!
