Try a small cable tie to hold spring and plunger slightly compressed, should be able to pull tie out afterwards.

Hi Andy
Just re read your first post in this thread.
You said the belt is nice and tight, this puts unnecessary strain on alternator pully, could it be too tight, you should half about 10 -12 mm deflection if you push the belt in between the pullys.

Could be a dry belt, spray some wd 40 on the belt whilst its spinning.
If alternator theres a bearing each end of the spindle, could be dry or worn out, grab the end of the spindle see if theres any up and down movement.
Good luck

Stuff I used was from Frosts, Vht,I might try some heat
BUT
the instructions on the tin say " DO NOT FORCE DRY THIS PRODUCT".
SO
I'll just be gentle.
I just tickled it with a hair dryer, not staying on a spot for too long,
Strange stuff once it statrs going you see it, then I just worked out from the area.
Once done I bung in in the Aga s simmering oven for twenty mins, seems to harden it off,
Yes its tougher to start with, but think it will harden with age.
If it comes out not as well, spray another coat.
-
I get excellent drying the second coat with a hairdryer
