  1. Many thanks for help. Did anyone have any info about construction of TR 6 dizzy. If you look under the bowl of the main part it looks like it was separate. How the were joined ? Anyone fixed one that has broken at that point.?

  2. Thanks very much for all the words of wisdom gentlemen ! My car was originally CR PI but was converted in past to triple webers. If that makes any difference to any advice already given. Cam shaft is unknown but car goes well compared to standard PI.

Seems only way forward is to give it a try in the car! The dizzy in question is a 22D no 41168B and seems to be in very good condition.

Looking at TR6 distributors they seem to be made in two parts. The main bowl part and the part with the tacho drive. Martin the Dizzy Doctor said they were made in two parts but re-cast together? They often break apart at this point. (one of mine has) Anyone know about this or has repaired one so broken?

  3. Hi Neil

Will be trying it on car as soon as I can but building work and plastering on my house is making it very difficult to get to my car !

Trying to build up some knowledge in meantime!

  4. Thanks Stuart

Spoke to Martin this morning. He said advance curb and cam would be wrong and suggested that I send it to him for altering to TR spec. I did not want bombard Martin with many questions as he was obviously very busy and called me back amongst a number of calls.

I have since wondered why cams would be different as both are 6 cylinder unless profiles are different.?

Has anyone tried GT6 dizzy on a TR6?

I would suppose that most TR6 advance curves are somewhat out anyway with modern fuel and modifications we have done.

Anyone come up with a good compromise of Dizzy springs and weights for both PI and on webers on mildly modded TRs ?.

  5. I bought a distributor at IWE for my tr6. On cleaning it up I have found it is for a GT6 not a TR6 !!!!

My TR6 is modified with sports exhaust and lightened flywheel running on triple 40 DCOE Weber carbs.

In its present state is the GT6 dizzy likely to work in my car without modification? I do have a spare TR6 dizzy which has broken casting and would be able to transfer weights and springs over to GT6 dizzy but are the cams different?( Both 6 cylinder). Thoughts please

  6. Thanks for info. Looks like the the little pronged things that are sold as ground planes are going to be a waste of time. Should I be earthing the magmounts? Also as most sets are using cigarette lighter socket for power should I be putting additional earth wire to set? I was thinking of using co ax cable for power lead on hard wired sets to cut interference.

  7. Hi Thanks for replies. Our Cumbria Group tends to use the Lake District and Scottish Highlands for fantastic runs but many areas in those parts have non existent phone coverage. The ability to communicate adds fun and safety when someone has an issue or warning to problems encountered ahead. We had one car at the rear on fire in Highlands last year and comms meant immediate help and and a halt to the rest until we established he was OK and able to continue after fettling. The volume issue has been overcome by mounting speakers on dashtop centre behind the windscreen. I fixed the sets with cigarette lighter plugs and magmount ariels so they can be put into a car very quickly. This is obviously a compromise. We have tried hand set held sets without success and the legal issue is grey. C.B. is exempt. The knowledge I need is the best type of Ariel's to use and how to get the best out our sets.

  8. Is there anyone who has expert knowledge on CB Radios? I have amassed a number of sets and used them with mixed success on runs with Cumbria Group. I could do with talking to someone with expertise to improve our setups. Use has shown them to be an important additional safety feature when working well.

  9. After Cumbria Groups epic Highlands tour this year we got caught in a severe traffic jam just south of Glasgow. Very warm and humid, some of the cars started to overheat. We all suffered poor running with the high under bonnet temperatures. Of course the old dodge of putting heater on to help cooling was employed. This results in the cabin with hood up to resemble a sauna. (I know I should have fitted the big Kenlow fan I bought 3 years ago!). I have since been thinking -would it be possible to reverse polarity of heater fan so that in a emergency when extra cooling was required, the fan extracted air out of the cabin and out of the scuttle grill. The air would still be going through heater matrix but in reverse. It would only work when stationary because of air pressure but thats when you need the extra cooling.

    Any thoughts?

  10. Hi Peter - points set at 15 thou. Old set had been in the car for about 5 years. I should have checked the gap of the old ones which also had not been altered at all. I wonder if I have altered the timing to suit the points Gap in the past and now I have set the points correctly it has upset the timing slightly.Or am I talking rubbish?

  11. Changed my points as they looked worn and going to do a lot of miles at weekend. - I know dont fix wot aint broken !!!

Changed rotor arm for quality red one. Will fitting new points have altered timing? -as now not running and picking up as well as it did before.

What is correct Dwell angle for late tr6?,( typical cant find my manual !)I have got a Gunsons unit for checking.

I am running an Aldon ignitor coil which may be too much for points (gap different a for high power coil?) but has been fine for three years.Car running on triple weber 40 DCOE.

    Any thoughts please! .

  12. Hi. The problem often is that the window winder mechanisms that are sold from the suppliers are not original TR ones but come from something like a Marina. I remember reading an informed article on this in the past. This means that the shaft that the handle goes is slightly shorter than it should be. I relate to your problem !! I think I used the shaft of a pop rivet or a masonry nail in the end cut to right size, as a pin to fit the handle on the shaft. You need a pin with a point on it so you can get it in and push it through.. You may have to dispense with the foam spacer washer or substitute it. Such a simple job I thought but several hours of frustration!! I wish I had read the article before.

    Good luck! Mark

  13. Thanks for that Peter. My current battery is at least 12yrs old ! As we Cumbrians are off on our annual camping trip to the Highlands at the weekend I think I had better get a new one. Having a high torque starter lulls you into a false sense of security as seems to draw a lot less current.

  14. I have been given a 2.5 saloon dizzy with a Luminitions chopper led trigger system .I do not have a Lumintions Ignition module. I do have a Maplins kit Ignition that uses the points as the trigger. Can I connect the two systems ? I suspect it will depend on the voltage of the optronics trigger system, Any help appreciated .

I intend to use on a TR6 currently fitted with points, an Aldon Ignitor coil and a Splitfire unit on the main ignition lead.

I have read that the Aldon Ignitor coil should only be used with a electronic Ignition. Car seems to run ok on points.

    Any thoughts of wisdom!

  15. Pretty conclusive then ! Thanks for replies Appears that 2500S head would be best to use .According to Mr Witors info my CR head should be small exhaust valve but my spare is large ex valve. So may have a small ex head on my early CR at present and my spare may have been modified in the past. If I use the 2500s head it seems it will need skimmed. Will it also need uprated to larger exhaust valve spec.?

  16. Thanks for that reply. Ive got a spare good early CR Head with the larger exhaust valves and I was going to fit it it to my car. Im not sure if my current head has double valve springs but it would seem that CR models got double valve springs or maybe there was a transition while they used up stock of the CP heads?. I will have to check mine but as I have a period SAH rocker cover that took several goes to get oil tight Im not keen to take it off just to look ! The reason why I am asking is -if my current head has double valve springs is there a serious advantage in swapping them over to my spare head when I get round to fitting it?.

  17. Early CR TR6's seem to have been fitted with cylinder Heads that were 'intermediate' and had the larger exhaust valves as per 150 bhp cars - am I correct?. Should this head have double valve springs fitted as I have read that all CR cars got double valve springs. Can anyone explain the merits of double valve springs and why they were changed back to double on the CR models as per earlier models of the CP TR6?

  18. Has anyone fitted a viable fi or efi fuel injection system from another vehicle ? Is there is a system like that will fit with some modification? Hopefully from a scrapped doner car as otherwise the costs of going down that route wont be worth it even with the present cost of fuel.

I was thinking of the bosch jetronic metering with the original throttle bodies and plenem - possible or not ?

    Thoughts and details please !
