  1. I am trying to add new oil to the gearbox. The dipstick is  difficult to reach and the clean oil does not show up easily. How can I improve it so that I can see where the level is after my top up of 200ml. I was thinking of wrapping the dipstick in masking tape but I am nervous about losing anything in the gearbox.

If I touch it with a clean finger there is some clean oil above the lower mark but it is impossible to see any top level. It is tempting to use some wooden dowel and a pencil to add level marks.

Please help me with some answers,

    Thanks Richard & B

  2. Thanks for the fast reply on a Sunday. I have has a look at the fusebox and I can see the three green wires. I tested them and they were only live when the ignition was on.

So tomorrow I will try and find where the existing cable is connected and may end up with a new short length.

If I am successful I will move on to the next problem. There is always a list

  3. I was out in the TR this morning and stopped to look at the map. The ignition was off and the heater was still blowing air. It turned off on the rotating control and was working well.

I am sure that the supply to the heater blower control should only be live when the ignition is on. Where should the supply start from so that is only live when necessary??

My wiring diagram is no help.

    Thanks Richard & B

  4. I have delivered my original Dynamo to a specialist who will strip it down and let me know what he finds. The car is running well so he will fit in my problems when he has time. He said about two weeks.

I will leave him alone until he reports back. These experts are becoming hard to find ???

Clear sky and no wind means a trip out in the TR at lunchtime and a road test of the electrics.

  5. Today I had a friend to help me. He could only come , on the Wednesday,  if there was no rain. After two days of serious wind and rain this morning was warmer and dry with no wind.  It was looking hopeful at breakfast time.

He had changed Dynamo before on TRs  and had all the correct tools and experience.  He arrived at 1.00  and was finished by 2.09. I ran the engine before he arrived and the dynamo became very hot. I emptied a small amount of water on to the hot Dynamo and it dried up immediately. How could it become so hot ??? I left him working on the car and he managed easily,  including the wide fan belt !!

The replacement is working well and the new regulator is strong and will never need any adjustment. This looks like it may be an end to regulator adjustment which has been going on for many years during my ownership of this TR

Please let me know why the old Dynamo became so hot in such a  short time.

    Thanks  Richard & B

  6. Strong wind last night and I was worried that trees could blow over during the emergency. But this morning it is quiet and normal but no Woodpeckers. I am keeping a close watch.

    Thanks Richard & B

  7. Thanks for the pictures. Peter VW sent me a good picture with the same colours as my visitor and I have a similar dispenser which helps to judge  the size of my local bird. Is this a special woodpecker ? Mine has the same markings on his head and if he allows me out in the garden I will take a picture next time he arrives.

Since I posted here he has not come back for any food. The small garden birds are all gathering for the fat balls and they empty the seed dispenser in about  three hours.

The sky is clouding over and it looks like some bad weather is coming soon.

    Thanks Richard & B

  8. Hi All,

Thank you for the fast replies. The weather is not so cold today so things are busy on the feeder tray.

Thanks to Iain and Rod and it looks as if they have taken these pictures at home.   Peter VW Your picture of a woodpecker is just right. My book of song birds has over 50 different wild birds and no woodpeckers. Your picture shows the correct black/white head, the back feathers and the red feathers under the tail.

I have just now put out the fat balls and there are a group varied small birds but no signs of the Woodpecker yet

    Where do they sleep ??

  9. The improvement was having the slave cylinder mounted in the correct position which would be the " original slave position " and not the position that I chose firstly which was not correct. The length of the push rod is also important and must be adjusted correctly.

My clutch works vey well and I remember struggling with it in the past.

    Good luck Richard & B

  10. I have a wild bird feeding tray in the garden. There are fat balls hanging and some different small local wild birds will all eat  at the same time.  Once the big black birds arrive the small ones hide in the garden trees. The blackbirds do not stay long and if I open the back door they fly away. I enjoy watching them from inside the house which is warmer than the garden.

But there is one who feeds occasionally. I have a small book with pictures of many small birds and I can not find a correct picture. The nearest match with the correct colours on the head and back is the Willow Tit. BUT  the picture does not show the bright red feathers on the back end under the tail.

Is there anyone on the TR forum who can help me identify my visitor who is very welcome ?

    Thanks Richard & B

  11. I had some similar problems with my clutch. In the end I replaced the flexible pipe and mounted the slave cylinder on the plate on the CORRECT side of the gearbox. I have had no more problems for at least 5 years.

It may be worth a bit of research

    Good luck Richard & B

  12. I have had this problem myself over many years. I try and repair all parts using well known specialists. There are a lot of new replacements which are not well made. This applies to other household items as well.

It is difficult finding suppliers who are enthusiasts for the TR old car and run the business with care. I was an early customer at C&B in the railway arches in West London . The Forum is the best way to find someone reliable who will make the parts that you need.

    Please keep helping

    Richard & B

  13. Thanks for all the information. I will be searching my spanner collection because, many years ago,  I may have had a ring spanner altered to fit in the available space. Today will be a step forward and I have a local dynamo repair specialist about 1/2 hour away.

    Thanks Richard & B

  14. Is there anyone on the Forum who has access to the dynamo on the engine in the workshop ? If they could try a socket that fits and let me know the size it would make the work a lot more possible for me.

Please do not go out in the cold but if you can help it would be very useful.

    Thanks Richard & b

  15. I started the TR engine yesterday and the Ignition light was on continuously. So I changed the regulator for a new solid state instead of the old one which was always needing adjustment. A job that I have been planning for many weeks. I started the engine again and the red-light stayed on as before.

It is time to change the dynamo itself. I spent almost one hour in the very cold garage and managed to remove the adjusting  strip. The other bolts are hard to see and the flashlight on the iPhone refused to work. I was having difficulty seeing the mountings and lunch in the house was very inviting.

Back out this afternoon, after a dog walk in the sun. Thanks for the help.

    Richard & B

  16. My ignition red light on the dashboard does  not turn off. I started the car today and it ran well. I am now planning to have the dynamo overhauled by a local company in Portslade Sussex.

I remember doing this many years ago and took off the entire inlet manifold & carbs. This gave me enough access to be able to remove the dynamo. This was a long time ago and I am now looking for some advice on how to remove and refit the dynamo without interfering with the SU set up. Special spanners etc, ??

Any help would be very useful.

    Thanks Richard & B

  17. I have just checked the garage and could not find the boxes for the plugs. So I took one plug out and I have an answer.

My plugs are Iridium Power DENSO IWF 20  Japan. I will check the gap later. They have been in the car for some years and there has been no cleaning required.

When the sun comes out I will be replacing my Regulator RB106 with a modern version.

    Good luck with the plugs

    Richard & B

  18. Hi,

I had very similar problems on my H6. I fixed the choke cable to the front carb only so the rear carb choke was never moved.  I moved the new solid state cable to a new position on the dash so the it ran straight to the H6 and did not have to run round the heater fan. Then I fitted an expanding spring from the H6 connection on the front carb  to the inner front wing so that when  the cable was pushed back in , after removing the clothes peg !! , the choke was fully off.  I also keep  special SU adjusting small spanner in the car but have not needed to use it for many months

I  carried out some overhaul work on the SUs , including some special Viton seals and also upgraded the spark plugs. I can find the details if you are interested. They cost about 28 quid a set of 4, but they run hotter and do not soot up.

Let me know if you need any further help ?

Good luck in the new year from Richard & B
