  1. I'm having a a bit of a clear out of some unwanted TR parts which might be useful to other members.

I have a tow bar suitable for a TR2 -4 which I no longer need,,

A set of chrome TR4 /4A wire wheels that need a jolly good clean up to get the shine back,  Photos to follow.

A black Racetorations gearbox tunnel that has seen better days but is still capable of being fitted.

    A TR5/6 radiator.

I don't want much for them  but better to go to a TR person than to the dump so please make me an offer

  2. One wheeze the Micheal Cotti boys used to employ was to stay at the nearby Butlins holiday camp in Bognor Regis.   A group of us would hire one of the 4 berth chalets and place a few extra bodies inside  for the weekend which brought the nightly room rate down quite a bit.  The advantage of using Butlins was they  had to publish their room rates well in advance and so couldn't  jack the price up for the goodwood weekend.  Not sure if that's still the case as for the last few years I have found a tame B&B who only charges me £45 pn.

  3. I have just heard the sad news that Bob Eccles has passed away.   I didn't know Bob all that well even though we sat on the TRR ctte together for a few years but he was always someone you could rely on and his enthusiasm for the marque and the club never faltered.  His time keeping was legendary  or should that be memorable because he once turned up at the wrong place  for a meeting,  and another time he was a day early !

I'm sure there will be others who can pay a better tribute to the man than me but  I extend my since condolences to his family.

  4. Sadly his £1m price tag was more of an albatross than a mark of recognising his talent.  It was if he always had to prove his worth and he became something of a target by opposing teams.  Many of today's crop of players  might attract huge transfer fees that makes Francis £1m price tag seem like small change  but do they have his talent?

I remember chatting to Harold Roxbee Cox (Lord Kings Norton) who worked on the R101 airship back in the 1920's 1930's. I am not sure if it was the R101 or the Hindenburg but  luckily for him he gave up his seat to someone else on the very flight that the airship caught fire killing most of them on board. He witnessed the airship go up in flames knowing that he could easily have been on board. He was quite an interesting character. He used to turn up in a 6.3 litres V8 Bristol 411.  A beautiful car with a superb red leather interior. Look at the link to see detailed photos

It would have to the Hindenburg Keith as the R101 caught fire over rural France and so he wouldn't have been there to see it burn.  But to see the Hindenburg he would have to have been at Lakehurst so maybe he was going on a return flight?  As Chief of the Defence Staff he was also interested in the 'flying saucers' debate, writing the foreword to  'Above Top Secret' by Timothy Good

  6. All this is very interesting but going back to one of the basic problems, isn't it the stuff coming out of the exhaust which is said to be causing global warming? That being the case,  surely the answer isn't to get rid of internal combustion engines which have become more and more efficient over the years but to change the fuel they burn.

  7. Following on from the success of the mid summer coast to coast run,  there are still places available for the northern run  on the 25th/26th  September.

Based at the Morritt Hotel at Barnard Castle, the run goes first to the West Coast and stops at the famous Midland Hotel at Morcombe before heading east the next day to Whitby and the equally famous Magpie Cafe for what are possibly the best fish n chips you buy anywhere in the UK.  in line with other events I'm hoping to keep the cost down to £350 per CAR based on two people sharing on a dinner bed and breakfast rate for our two night stay.

if anyone else is interested in coming along or require further details please contact me asap  at 1953paulhogan@gmail.com

  8. I was offered the chance to go to CLM this year but I chose to go 'Dutch' instead.   What a great event without having to put your hand in your wallet every time like you do at CLM.  My thanks  to the organizing team. for putting on such a great event.

Could we host something like that here? I don't think so because here people still want to camp of bring their motor homes along and we also want covered parking for the traders and concours entries.   The noticeable thing about the Dutch event was that people just turned up in their TRs and either stayed in the exhibition complex or booked into a hotel or B&B in the area.

The three driving tours they organised worked very well.  We chose the trip to Arnhem to see the WW2 memorials.  Well worth doing. if you are ever over there.

Sadly, Pinky got rear ended by a tanker driver so he was not a happy bunny  but at least he and Mrs Pinky were ok.

  10. Just had a copy of the Silverstone Auction catalogue drop through my door and it seems that the Twin Sparks collection is selling off a number of cars including  the ex works TR5 demo car LHP 288F  or CP1  as its being advertised.  It doesn't have the original engine number, (CP3)  as it was replaced with another early unit, CP28E. Its estimated to go under the hammer for around £55,000-£65,000.  The book says Dave Bishop was the former owner and those of you who have heard  of Dave will know that he worked for BL Heritage and helped to set up the TR6 body shell project.

  12. I don't know how true this is so some verification from the top wouldn't come amiss but I've heard that one of the 'surprises' will be some 'OFF ROAD' driving!

Well that's Phil Tucker and Wayne taken care of but what about the rest of us?  I'm sure it might make a good spectacle but will there be any other takers to go mud plugging in their TR? I doubt it.

  13. I heard about the passing of Nick James from another source but that doesn't lessen the shock of learning about it.  He was such a fun chap to be around. Full of life and a zest for living.  I hadn't seen Nick for years after he moved from his village near Silverstone and lost touch but then we just bumped into each other at the Ludlow Festival one day and it was if it was only a few weeks had passed since we last spoke.  A true gent and sadly missed.  He did a great deal for the club in its early days and inspired me to take out my comp licence and start the Curborough sprints. back in 1978/9.

  14. I would just like to say 'Thank you' to all of the people who enquired about the south west coast to coast run. I'm please to say that it sold out within a few days of being advertised and we have an excellent selection of cars coming on the event.

There has also been a good response for the Northern tour I'm planning in September. There are still about ten places available on this tour so if you are interested drop me a line at 1953paulhogan@gmail.com or PM me.

  15. The latest edition of TRaction has only just dropped through my letter box but I'm pleased to say that the piece about the June C2C run on page 8 has generated a lot of interest and there are now only THREE spare places available.

If spending a weekend with fellow TR owners in glorious Devon, Dorset and maybe even Somerset appeals to you then please drop me a line to 1953paulhogan@gmail.com or PM me on here.

The tour is based just outside Tiverton and includes two nights Dinner B&B As usual I try and keep the prices down and this tour should cost no more than £375 PER CAR based on two persons sharing a double room .

    Regards,

    Hogie.

  16. Yes John and Ev were regular features on the Lakes tours. My enduring memory of Ev was on one VERY wet Lakes weekend when they arrived in their TR2 without the hood on to exclaim "Eeh, I'm wet right through to me knickers!"   A great couple.   We'll not see their like again.

  17. Despite me saying I would not be organising another Coast to Coast run I have been persuaded to change my mind and so I have dusted off the maps and selected not one but two routes for 2023.

The first of these will take place in the South West  and the second one will be in the north Yorkshire area but both will see a departure from the usual format in that they will be based at just one hotel rather than going from one hotel to another. This has made the organisation so much easier  and is reflected in the prices i'm able to negotiate.

The south west run is going to be based near Tiverton  in Devon and will see us travel a route to the fantastic Dorset coast before heading back to the hotel for the evening dinner. The next day sees us depart for the more rugged north Devon coast and back to the hotel for another evening meal.   Places are limited to just 19 cars and so early registration is advised. A £50 deposit secures your place on the trip while the total cost should be no more than £380. This is to include 2 nights B&B,  2 x three course evening meals and coffee on arrival.

I'm planning a second coast to coast run to take place in early September based in the Barnard Castle area.  This run will go west on day one to the arrive at the Midland hotel in Morecambe for afternoon tea before heading back over the moors for dinner. The second day of the tour will head east to Runswick Bay and Whitby before heading back to the hotel for our final evening meal.  At the time of writing I'm unable to confirm dates or prices for this second tour but I'm hoping to keep it to around the £400 mark.

If you are interested drop me an email to 1953paulhogan@gmail.com  and I will reply asap.

  18. Just a quick update for those who knew John, his funeral takes place today, Wednesday 2nd November.  I haven't been able to speak to Ev yet but I will pass on all your condolences to her when I do.

Just as aside, it's worth noting that John and Ev were key members of the TR management committee when the office was based in Berkhamsted.  They rarely if ever missed a ctte meeting despite having to drive all the way down from Blackhall Mill in Northumberland. a distance of some 270 miles and about 5 hours travelling time each way.   If that's not dedication I don't know what is.  Trouble is, in this age of facebook and email that's all forgotten now.  If it were not for people like John and Ev the club would never have prospered although I'm not so sure sure John would approve of the way things have turned out with the club with it becoming more business focused.   In its early days the TR Register was full of enthusiastic members who would volunteer and do things for the club because they wanted to.  As a club, we seem to have lost that feeling of joining in for the greater good to be replaced with a 'what's in it for me' attitude.

I'll stand corrected but I dont think John ever missed an International until his illness became so bad that he could no longer drive or attend and IWE.  What he would make of all the talk going on now about the IWE  I can only imagine.
