  1. What with the engine and gearbox and tin body I'm also thinking you're going to have a serious deviation problem

A trip to your local airfield and parked up on the compass swing bay with a packet of Roger's little magnets to stick in various places to true the thing up as I'm also guessing road maps are drawn wrt true north, not magnetic north?

I didn't realise those Silvas were so big. Back to a little Christmas cracker one then!

  2. Is that the daughter in the photo? She Doesn't look too impressed!

I wondered that, she appears to be holding a small bucket. Have you been washing it already :D

Superb an Airfix kit for grown ups!

Thread creep but do you remember this ...

I reckon that would look good on the garage wall!

  3. I suspect that it was a fad in the early seventies to paint engine bays in black

I don't remember that particular mod, but do remember kits to jack up the back, putting a light on the diff, wheel spacers, external American style sidewinder exhausts and Sperex window tint :-)

  4. Steve, I don't think you can get the Toyos in the original profile. Loads of people stick 195s on the 5 and 6 but I found the 165/82 profile (closest to original) very quiet and more suited to the car without the sticky grunting feeling of over wide rubber.

Search the forums for "Vredestein" and you'll find loads of posts on tyre comparisons.

  5. Steve, thanks for the recommendation. I gave Colin a call. The kit came really quickly, so quick the car was still with John Andon having some paint and other bits done, so I dropped the kit off with him and he fitted it for me.

The car feels much better, and strangely, quieter too. The old rear suspension bounced a couple of times, not quite in ocscillation, but enough to hit the stop. Now each bump is quickly damped in one cycle and the car feels better. Still early days, less than 100 miles driven with the new set up, but will report back when some more miles under my belt.

The bracket & Koni kit was a lot cheaper than the normal suppliers but be aware, Colin supplies the steel brackets unpainted so you need to prep them first.

  6. I would add John Andon as a recommended supplier. They have sorted out various issues with my cars for the last 15 years and have moved from almost entirely modern car insurance stuff to entirely classic restoration. They do a lot of work for Bill Shepherd Mustang and John has several TRs in the shop under various states of repair and restoration.

I like to do lots of work myself but John has happily carried out all the bits I wasn't able or willing to do myself. He has recently sorted out a rusting section of chassis, fitted the CTM/Koni rear shock upgrade, sorted out some rust on the door and repainted in perfect match, fixed a bonnet hinge issue, aligned the bonnet beautifully etc.

He will quote on each job and his hourly rate is extremely competitive. Based in West Byfleet.

John Andon Classic Cars. You'll often catch John at the usual shows and occasional racing (Lotus Mk1 at Silverstone next).

  7. I don't know where to look for them on this forum?

Very top right of the forum window (any page inc this one). Scroll to top to see black title bar. Little envelope on the left side of the group of the icons. Will have a little red number next to it for the number of messages you have. Click on that.

  8. The TR5 was a compromise for us. I always fancied a 6 but my missus liked the shape of the 4. There was only one car that fitted. We were both agreed on colour and I was fortunate to find one here.

I sent Dave a pm offering him a drive in mine, a chat about my relatively recent buying experience, suggested a trip to Malvern etc. I sent the message on the 17th, two days after his original post and see he hasn't read it yet. I guess he's still finding his way round the forum but he hasn't logged in for 10 days so I guess he's gone cold for now. Probably nothing to do with the posts here.

As for not caring what other people think, I'm the opposite. I like my car to shine at shows, it gets a lot of interest and I'm happy to talk to anyone about it. I'm very proud of mine and do care what impression it gives. No offence to drivers of the following marques, but what do you think of the driver when you see a BMW or Audi or Porsche "making progress" down the road? Now what if the throaty spurt of a TR whizzes past?

The TR turns heads wherever she goes and I'm proud of that. The desire to own one is clearly increasing as the value of all the models is gently rising compared to two years ago. The lowly TR5 is not over inflated by "city money" or other speculation, it's simply a rare car in demand with buyers prepared to pay to own one. Flash money is going into stuff well above my head as seen at recent auctions.

Now, Dave - where are you?

  9. Following on from my question about possible rear suspension upgrade, has anyone fitted the Moss Quick Rack? I've got "standard" width tyres fitted so don't need to build biceps like Popeye if the lock to lock was reduced, but I wonder if you had fitted this and any thoughts on the product and feel of the car post mod?

  10. One of the foibles of the TR5 I have always put up with is the tendency for it to bottom out at the rear. Either cornering or on the straight, pulling away sharpish in second will always dip the back and hit the bump stops.

John Andon had a drive the other day and commented on the relative softness of the rear end and recommended a tele conversion. Moss do 3 of them. I'm not too concerned about originality but improving the general handling.

Has anyone done this? Any regrets? Any thoughts on the various options and choice of dampers Moss offer (Spax/Koni/Gaz). How about any others eg Revington?

  11. I remember when fog lights were mounted low below the bumper to penetrate the shallow layer of clear air where the heat from the road would lift thick fog by a foot or two and you could creep home hugging the kerb slowing right down when you heard someone coming the other way. The Highway Code used to mention 100 yards but since the 1980s fog lights have been some sort of nasty "look at me" style statement such that manufacturers now call them running lights and changed them to those God awful LEDs.

As for the rear ones that the MLOC feel fit to use in heavy rain ...

  12. Nice car there and the colour will help you stand out on the road. One of the big issues I have with driving a classic is that they are much smaller and often lower down than modern cars and other drivers simply don't see you or do but assume "it's old, it's slow".

How on earth did we all cope without power steering?

By having the correct size tyres on the car. I changed the 195/65 on 6" rims for 165/82 (full profile) and it transformed the steering and the handling of the car. I don't know anything about the TR7 but it might be worth a look what is fitted compared to the original size.

More info in the Tyre Size ..... again! thread
