The OD will need the shorter main shaft so yes, it will mean taking the tranny apart again. You will also need the OD unit of course as well as the adapter housing, loom, switch and escucheon. Prop shaft is the same as the non-OD unit. Still all worth it in my opinion. Have you driven a non-OD TR6 for any distance Richard ?

    Stan

No really long distances Stan,Oh, its a shorter one,I said 'longer'.Need to do some sums as it would not be cheap. Then there is the diff to think about and this and that and this etc..shopping list is getting longer since I posted this.........Enjoyable? yes everytime.

  2. Hi Richard,

    Looking good.

I am planning a rebuilt if my engine too.

Did you experience anything on the rebuilt kit, positive or any opportunities for improvement?

    thanks,

    Waldi

No Waldi,it all went to plan...so far

  3. I accept I will need to break down the gearbox but that doesnt spook me.

Secret to all of this which I still probably need to master is prioritising because at the end of the day it comes down to size of the money pot.I knew financially on paper this project for me was do-able but as it progresses, choices become apparent that potentially move the goal posts.

  4. Stan,

Does make sense, thing is I have already rebuilt the gearbox so wouldnt be a simple add on,presume I would need to take it apart again and change the main shaft as I think it is longer with OD.Not gone in to it in detail yet..just gathering information at this point.

Roger, interesting what you say and I probably will take your good sensible advice. Will hold fire for a day or two to see what other comments appear.

    Thanks Both.

  5. Yes Stan it was for a tow bar...I found the original owner... he confirmed. The old grinder came in handy for that one..Yes got to decide how important an overdrive is and whether the extra expense is really worth it and would overdrive increase re sale value and potential customers that much, although I do not intend to sell it, as that was not the aim in the first place.

Thanks Roger.. Will have a look at new Bastuk...Advise on recons..best place? or DIY recon.?

  6. Nice job Tim...I too was wondering about whether to do base coat and Lacquer or solid.Jury's out at the moment, still a year's worth of restoration before I have to make the decision also solid is easier to touch in/repair I would have thought.Mine's also Pimento,I was thinking of changing the colour but at the end of the day,I think back to original is always best.

  7. Hi Waldi,

The Gaz ones I've installed are adjustable on the car.I will adjust the setting when the rebuild is done and on the road...That moment seems a long long way off!

Will update my rebuild blog over the holiday with some pics of the completed front suspension.

Finally to you and to all those helpful forum members that have answered my questions and helped me through issues during the last year, have a happy and peaceful Christmas.

    Richard.

  8. Hi Waldi,

Good work!.....as I commented on my update post,my new Gaz were 25mm shorter than the Rimmers standard shocks but still not as short as the originals but they do the job and the trunnion is not having to bear the pressure by acting as a stop on full extension.I also had the bigger problem of top ball joint being so far over that it seized lateral lock to lock travel of the stub axle and this has been cured and moves freely.

Another point worth a mention is that I guess also that the shimming of the bottom wishbone arms have a bearing on the geometry.I have 4 x 4 on one side and 3 x 3 on tuther. This would have an influence on the top ball joint travel limit.Would be interesting to know how many shims you have and following the theory through,if you have less then perhaps thats why you didnt have the stub axle jamming because the angle would be less causing less side travel of the ball joint...Anyway let us rejoice, our little trunnions can sleep better now!

This experience has taught me that there can be quality issues in the 'new' parts market and that is not good especially when safety might be compomised. Will check everything now before I fit new stuff;Lesson learnt.

    Regards

    Richard.

  9. The Final Conclusion......

Ok,just fitted GAZ shocks received from Rimmers this morning.

Before I fitted one I took the extended measurement and it measured exactly 25mm shorter than the new standard shock.

Anyway we have a result!!! With suspension hanging, the trunnion does not touch the springpan and not affecting the downward hang of the suspension and I can swivel the stub axle lock to lock with no problem.

Incidently the reason why the swivel of the stub axle was stuck was because of the top ball joint.I will explain...

As I have already described from the onset, with the suspension hanging 2 things were occuring, the trunnion was acting as a stop and governing the droop of the suspension and also I could not turn the stub axle laterally,it was solid. The reason for this was that the increased angle of the ball joint to the vertical link (because of the extra drop), was sending the ball shaft (the bit with the nut) outside its working parameters and was right up against the side of its housing thus creating a situation where the ball joint and vertical link became as one..and end result a stuck stub axle.

I'm no mechanical engineer so forgive me if all this could have been described with fewer words! Just hope you are with it so far!

I proved this to myself earlier today, with the standard shock installed,I removed one of the 2 bolts that attached the ball joint to the top wishbone arms and gently loosened the remaining one and the ball joint immediately assumed a friendlier angle with the vertical link and voila I could move the stub axle with no problem.

So friends, at the end of the day my problems were definately caused by my new standard shocks being too flippin' long, not to the correct original spec and not fit for purpose......at least not in my case.

Incidently,if anyone wants to check their 'droop' to see if they might have an issue, I would make sure the car is jacked up on 'BOTH' sides so that the anti roll bar assumes an 'at rest position' otherwise with just one side jacked up the ARB will create an upward force on the hung side and create a false diagnosis...thought about this at 5am this morning!

Hey... on to new pastures me thinks....the rear suspension. OMG!!

    Richard.

  10. Hi Kev thanks for birthday wishes....

    Waldi is correct....

The new standard shockers when fully extended are 330mm thereabouts from centre of bottom bolt hole to middle of the two top rubbers, My original shockers (1972 vintage) measure 300mm.

I'm getting pair of GAZ today which Rimmers have measured at 300mm,so I will fit them and hopefully my troubles will be over.

    Regards

    Richard

  11. Not fitting these standard shocks....they're going back...

Will go for Gaz or Koni. I'm not pursuing this any further.

Just hope people out there will now be aware that the standard shocks available today are not to spec and may cause issues in some cases, as I have found.

    Richard.

  12. Latest update...Rimmers.

Just had this email from them............

    "Hi Richard

We have taken the time to inspect the car in our showroom. We have found that our car has exactly the same issue but does not effect the operation of the steering.

For this reason it is the decision of our purchase department to pursue this matter no further."

  13. I used Envirostrip, both for chassis, tub and body panels.Came back all etch primed.

Saves so much hassle, mess and time compared with doing it yourself and arguably a much thorough job.I have a blog on this site with some pics if you are interested.I know what you mean regarding acid left behind etc.. but they do a 4 part process, one of which is dipping again to neutralise the chemicals. Its worth having a chat with them..they are very friendly and helpful and they will go in to more detail of their process.

    Regards

    Richard.

    Have sent you a PM

  14. Seems so Roger..confirmed by Carl at Rimmers..He measured their standard ones and he actually said GAZ/SPAX/KONI were over an inch shorter same dimension as my originals. (all measured fully extended)
