  1. Cheers Stuart

my 6 had a large gap on the (UK) off side - however this is definitely a replacement wing - inner wings are untouched originals - therefore hoping that when I refit the outer wings I can tighten up the gap

thanks again and my apologies for high jacking the thread

    regards

    Matt

  2. The holes should have been pre-drilled as you should have already set up the bonnet gaps using the rubbers before painting.

    Stuart.

    Stuart

Do I have to adjust the front wings to the bonnet ? or do you adjust the bonnet as well ?

    cheers

    Matt

Many, many years ago I shorted the electrics on my sisters Mk2 Cortina ! - I tend to fit a battery cut off switch on one of the battery terminals on most of my classics now a days - very useful in a brown pants situation !

Glad all is well with your 6 now

    Regards

  4. All

Will I get any meaningful figures/readings for crank end float if I'm not able to depress the clutch on my 6 ?

(clutch cylinder not fitted and car has been in storage for 15 years so expecting clutch diaphragm/plate is "stuck")

A quick check levering the pulley/pushing it back does indicate some small movement, but as mentioned, have not operated the clutch when doing this.

I should be able to get hold of a dial indicator but is there any point until clutch is working ?

If the end float is within the stated tolerances and clutch depressed will a noise be heard anyway ?

    Any thoughts?

    Regards

    Matt

  5. Anybody used the BMIHT Dating letter ? "cheaper" at £23 - but the BMIHT website does state "Please note that registration authorities will only accept a Heritage Certificate as proof of a vehicle’s build date." which is £42 plus delivery

  6. Hello Eran and Alan T

Just to mention I did replace the O/D inhibitor switch on my MGB and checked all the wiring - despite this, the overdrive circuit was still live in reverse gear - I have to admit that I gave up in the end and fitted the relay as a last resort !.

Eran hope you have more luck with your O/D post-13669-0-83516100-1458595465_thumb.jpg

    Was a good MG too

    Best regards

    Matt

  7. Hello Eran

I had a similar problem with a MGB a few years back - I wired a switched relay that was operated via the power from the reversing light circuit off the reverse light switch in the gearbox - I.E when you put the car into reverse and the circuit on the reversing lights came "live" , it cut the power to Overdrive unit.

If I recall its was reasonable easy and cheap to fit - I'll see if I can find my notes, however it was a few years ago

Hope this helps and good luck

    Matt

  8. Hi Dave

Do you have a NOVA certificate for your 6 ? when was it inported into the UK ? If the car is registered on the NOVA system, it should just be case of MOTing it and then registereing the car with the DVLA and paying a £55 fee - thats what I'm expecting to do with my car

    regards

    Matt

  9. Nice discovery !

This key looks a small one like the boot. &/or the glove box.. is it really the ignition key ?

    Regards

    Hello Marc

No I always knew about the ignition key - the small key was found later in its secret hiding place !

    all the best

    Matt

  10. Cheers Kevin - not tried it !

I'm sure your son will chuffed with the mini - plus he can help now !

Put some pics of the mini on here - I'm sure everyone on here wont mind a classic of another kind ! :D

    thanks again

    Matt

  11. Dash is off for re veneering - metal back rust free - windscreen frame also good.

When I got the 6 it only came with an ignition key (or so I thought) when I removed the ashtray and empted it out (spent matches, broken bulb and a few cents) I found the door key screwed to the underside.

I had a huge amount of help from Kevin from the forum sorting door, boot and glove box locks etc and even with this surprise find I'm still very grateful for all his help - Kevin hope the minis coming on well !

  12. My 6 was £2200 plus shipping and tax - North Carolina car (lots of snow ?) but under sealed at dealer from new - still needed sill and battery box - perfect chassis - its been a joy stripping it - every nut, bolt or set screw as new and comes apart with ease - even the front wing splash guards.

Factoring in changing the carbs to PI and RHD conversion ? pays your money and takes your chance

    Happy hunting for your 6

  13. Doesn't matter what the "pretend seller" tells you - as mentioned above, Paypal do not cover vehicles (or horse boxes apparently !)

I'm still baffled by how slow ebay are to reacted to these scams, even after the have been reported.

  14. I did the same (masked the edges of the outer sill and painted with chassis enamel (same with the floor flange and inner top sill) I intend pumping chassis enamel into the sills with the tube attachment on my undercoat gun.

Don't have any pics of the top inner sill - as Stuart mentioned the indents on the Martin Robey outer sill are not deep enough and to get the bottom of the outer sill to meet the floor flange I had to place a piece of wood along the length of the bottom edge of the sill and then use 3 jacks to raise it up (looking at the original fitting, the edges are slightly stepped).

The cap ends are pretty poor and needed a fair amount of adjusting to get them to fit.

  15. Would anyone have a single lower seat base cover in good condition ( in any colour ) that they would be willing to part with ? its for my 1974 (with stalk headrests type ) my seats are "usable" bar one lower seat base cover which has a large slit in it.

    many thanks and best regards

  16. Decembers Practical Classics reports -

    Black Plates Match Exemption

"The DVLA has announced that traditional black number plates with white or silver lettering will now be tied to historic taxation status.

The plates were formally replaced by reflective plates in 1972 one month before the previous January 1973 historic taxation cutoff. The new ruling will see the legalisation of black plates on cars that would not have originally worn them in period"

Does not include 2 year old black Range Rover sports driving 2 feet behind you.........

  17. Had a whole day to spend on the 6 so was able to repair the battery tray

    http://i.imgsafe.org/bcc60f7.jpg

Battery recess had a piece of ply to support the battery

    http://i.imgsafe.org/2ed4a16.jpg

    cut out corroded section

    http://i.imgsafe.org/68e45bc.jpg

and welded in a section cut from Moss part no CHAS4 which is the lower "T shirt section" chassis plate - nice gauge piece of metal cut to size - £17.88 plus VAT

    http://i.imgsafe.org/7e1f2d7.jpg

Once welded in and cleaned up, I painted the repair panel with thinned down "stone chip"

    http://i.imgsafe.org/4f44424.jpg

I appreciate that its looks a bit messy, but for the cost of the panel its a nice and solid repair and does at least resemble the original and should look better once painted body colour and covered up with a plastic battery tray and battery !
