  1. This had me scratching my head for a while, but it should now be resolved. What I did not realise is that although all the permissions were set correctly, there was another setting in quite a different part of the forum admin for setting a limit on how many reactions groups of users could have. It was set stupidly low, or to 0. This explains why everyone was merrily using it when we launched the new version and then it disappeared for some and not others!

Now all set to unlimited and should be operational for all.

  2. Interestingly, Apple Safari has dropped support for the Site Protection plugin from McAfee.

McAfee hates social networks, especially forums. If you insist on using it and ad-blockers - they offer this advice:

How to add URLs to the Trusted Sites list in Web Protection
Use the following steps to allow customers to add sites to a list of trusted sites so they will always be allowed to access those sites:
    • Log in to the Control Console.
    • Click the Web Protection tab.
    • Click the Policies tab.
    • Double-click the policy you want to edit or highlight the policy and click Edit.
    • Click the Category tab.
    • Click to expand the Trusted Site: Category Filter Bypass band.
    • Click New and type the URL you want to add to the Trusted Sites list.
    • Repeat steps 6 and 7 to add additional URLs as needed.
    • Click Save. Allow up to 15 minutes for your changes to take effect.
  3. The best person to ask is Alastair at Hamilton Classic, they are one of the clubs partners and offer a member discount. He runs a TR7 V8 group 4 rally car as developed a range of revolution and minilite wheels, top chap and very knowledgeable.

  4. Wow, lot of misinformation about this.

The conversion is very straightforward and is all just bolt on.

Hi ya Steve, great to see you posting unrivalled expertise on here! Are you suggesting above that you are able to fit Land Rover 4x4 LT77s into our 5-speed TRs at S&S as a simple bolt in conversion as well? If so, this is exciting news surely, as we don't need to bother with these more scarce 17A and 19A boxes anymore?

I stand corrected on the 5 -speed diff ratio. My spare CWP is 3.45:1 and came out of a 2 litre originally - hence the confusion in my brain, silly boy.

  5. I simply use the Rimmers Hella Halogen upgrade with Halfords super brilliant bulbs inside - still good after years of night rallies and Round Britain Runs !!

If you are increasing the wattage substantially then it's a good idea to relay your headlamps. It takes the strain off the original wiring by passing a lower current draw through the open cage switch and also helps to prevent that green fur that builds up on the contacts.

  6. I'm not aware of anyone who has successfully fitted a 4x4 derived LT77 into a TR7 before, I would certainly be interested to learn of one because the 4x4 variants have a much more readily available supply of spares and rebuild support. Remember the input shafts, gear ratios and quite a few other details I'm told are different on a Land Rover box to those found on a 2wd car, not least because they were engineered for use in conjunction with a transfer box of course. I understood that it is far from simple to replace a 5 -speed TR7 LT77 with an LT77 from a 4x4 - let alone all the necessaries mentioned above to convert from a 4-speed.

Bell - housing , clutch, prop shaft, rear axle and diff ratio (3.45:1 - I think... in 5-speed compared to 3.63:1 in 4-speed) are all different. Gearbox mount, bushings, remote, selector stick, speedo, speedo drive will also need changing as well. There might be other little details, that's off the top of my head.

Keep us posted on how you get on!

  7. They are indeed metric , I simply used the ones off the shelf at Halfords on my 1979 TR7 V8.

I'm running SD1 callipers and drums but absolutely no reason why they should be different to standard TR7 ones.

  8. One of the stand out moments of the arena this year was the pleasure of having so many TR7s / 8s joining us on Saturday afternoon. I can't remember the last time we had such a big and varied selection, so thank you Christopher and all those wedge owners for taking the time to bring them in and chat with us. The TR7 Sprint in that vibrant red really caught my eye and was a close contender of my car of the show, that honour in the end though was bestowed upon the TR8 Drag Car in Alec's memory.

  9. Hi All , the Showground is indeed not providing catering, the members told us they wanted something different.

This year we have external caterers, provided by Pistons in the Park, some with local food so there should be plenty of refreshments for you all.

Enquiries on the show are best directed to the TR Register rather than the Showground but please appreciate that the team are now on site setting up.

  10. Why would you want MOT exemption?

    Alan

Being exempt from an MOT is largely irrelevant and for most owners, something of a red herring. The majority (according to reports in CCW from the FBHVC) say they will MOT their car for safety. What is important in my view is getting your vehicle registered as a "Vehicle of Historic Interest" (VHI) . This categorisation once obtained, may well ensure our ability to use our cars unhindered by modern rules on fossil fuels in the not so distant future, not to mention being able to enter cities like London and Oxford after 2020.

  11. After a number of years of superb service, our valued wedge registrar has decided to step down from the role. Ian White has worked tirelessly on building the database of records for the TR7/8 models over the past few years and his time as TR7 Registrar saw the model celebrate its 40th anniversary. He has also contributed hugely valuable reports to TR Action Magazine covering all aspects of TR7 history.

So, now the club needs someone to take over from Ian, take on the records and help the club continue to build on it’s offering to wedge enthusiasts. All you need is some time and a huge amount of love and passion for the TR7/8 models. The volunteer must have decent writing skills and be IT literate as all TR Action submissions and records are kept digitally via emails, spreadsheets and cloud systems.

If you can give just a little time and a whole lot of enthusiasm to this role then get in touch with Jo Whitty on office@tr-register.co.uk in the first instance.

  12. The existing European Breakdown Directory compiled by Chris Hale (circa 2005) is still available to download here:

    https://www.tr-register.co.uk/past-issue/2015/08/0054/European-Breakdown-Directory

Dave Worne was / is compiling an updated version but to date has only been able to verify the data for France and Spain. It relies upon contacts in the respective countries to verify whether the locations and businesses are still open or not. He has submitted the data to the office of what he managed to get, but verifiers have not been forthcoming this time around and I think it is fair to say he has struggled to update the data reliably as a result, despite his really hard work and determination on the project.

Mick Forey has recently brought this back on the radar and as a result we plan to add to the website, the data we do have as a searchable directory list, rather like the local group pages with their map (and button to show the listing nearest to your smartphone location) in the not too distant future. Then that way, it will be able to be verified by feedback from travellers as we go. Its a project I will get on to as soon as I possibly can.

We used to produce print versions, but there was very little interest and remaining stocks were given away in renewal packs and at events to move them on. The PDF is useful if you want to just print out info for the countries you are visiting en route.

I also recommend the spares and spanners guide as well for PI cars:

  13. Hi Guppy916, I have a very rare TriumphTune cam for a TR7 2.0 Litre.

Yours for free in return for you joining the TR Register and sending in a small write up about your TR7 to the magazine :-)

  14. I'm very happy with my Powerlite high torque starter on my Grinnall. I had to remove the exhaust manifold that side to get access when I took the old one out, the new high torque motor will fit through the gap, but the old one didn't. I think it depends on what manifold you have on as well. Once the manifold is out of the way it's dead easy.

Not sure what you mean by seized, if it is spinning but not engaging with the flywheel then most likely you just need to change the solenoid on the top. If the motor itself is dead then even to fit new brushes you will have to remove it.

  15. Hi all,

Some very sad posts and views living on this thread [#6,#9,#10 for example]. Incredibly demoralising for staff and volunteers alike who work their socks off to come up with ideas and activities for the club and I struggle to understand where such negative views spring from, but nevertheless.

After looking back into TR Register history last year, I discovered that right from the very first celebration of 10 years in 1979, the club has always celebrated the UK launch in 1969. So there is no real reason to change that pattern. This view was confirmed by my conversation with Derek, (Saffron TR6 on here) who is our TR6 registrar, a few weeks ago.

The TR6 anniversary has been foremost in our discussions and wherever the 2019 TR International Weekend will be (we hope Shelsley Walsh) - the TR6 anniversary will be the central focus of it. We will have a LOT of space to work with.

There are also plans to host a day seminar with a key figure from the TR6's motorsport success and I have my own personal ambitions of seeing a '6 Counties Run' in celebration as well.

In addition, there are probably enough TR6s in the club to warrant an additional day event - Gaydon would be a good venue potentially, hence our trial run with the regional day this May!

Then of course we have the themed displays and celebrations in the full light of the public gaze at the NEC / Excel classic motor shows. Having slogged away at these for various other anniversaries over the years, I have a good idea of what we might be able to do there. We won the Classic and Sportscar award for Best Themed Stand when we celebrated the first TR in 2013 remember?

A track parade at Silverstone Classic should also be on the cards, but we need to get 2018's event done first.

So, in short, of course the TR Register will be celebrating the TR6 anniversary! We would welcome suggestions from the TR6 owning members as to what you would like to see and even more crucially, volunteers to help make those exciting plans happen. Perhaps a sub-committee of TR6 owners grouped together to share the load?

This is your club, so you can make these things happen. The management team, myself and the club staff are always listening and always open to ideas and suggestions..... especially if they come complete with the offer of a little help to get things moving. :)
