  1. Good morning

Having just acquired a 6, I am going through a steep familiarisation curve after 11 years with a 3A, which I gradually upgraded over time. I have started a similar list for the new cars, so a question on lighting upgrade (there will be more!).

Given the lower power draw of the headlight / side LED's, am I right in thinking that the traditional upgrade of a new fat cable and relays is no longer needed?

    Thanks

  3. Bought a few years ago (2018) in a fit of frustration when trying to resolve the overheating in my 3A which I eventually resolved without using this kit.

I did open the box to examine the contents but never attempted to used them.

£170 including 2nd class postage in UK.

    Please PM me if interested.

    Thanks - Miles

  4. Hi Andy

Re 1, is it possible that the rad cap had not been put on properly before the journey? Did this myself recently. Checked water level before a run and within 5 minutes noticed steam from the front of the car. Water spray obvious under the bonnet. Rad cap on slightly askew. Took off (carefully), topped up water,  put back on level. No more issues.

  5. Ah, the infamous XJ220.

For several years of my professional life I was instructed to pursue all the purchasers worldwide who, when the car finally came off the production line, engaged in a mass 'can't pay, won't pay' exercise. I think I saw every conceivable excuse for not paying for the car including 'it's too wide to go between the bollards restricting access to my road in Chelsea' and dissatisfaction with the shape of the steering wheel! None was successful. Every car was unique and bespoke. I remember seeing more than 100 of them being stored in an old shed at Browns Lane, with a few covered in old tarps and all splattered from bird sh*t from the resident pigeon population. A depressing scene.

Not perhaps the best of Jaguars engineering exercises and the Metro rally engine was possibly not the most appropriate powertrain. Luggage space consisted of room for three briefcases. Not exactly in the Grand Tourer tradition. However. Tom Walkinshaw had some class success with a modified version at Le Mans.

There was a time when you could pick one up for £40-50k. Starting to become an appreciating 'classic' now though.

  6. Pressed the starter button on the 3A this morning and....nothing. The car had power everywhere and started on the solenoid. So torch out and I jack-knived under the dash. The screw securing one cable to the starter button had come loose. Tightened up and all good - starter button function restored.

However, noticed there was no screw at all securing the other cable to the button.

Couldn't find a spare in my odds and sods box nor any details of what thread the grub screw is.

Anyone (Peter?) out there know what size grub screw I need to track down? Probably (hopefully) the least expensive investment I have made in the car.

  7. Sorry to hear of your poor dining experience on the street at Arnage.

We did that on our 2008 visit to CLM. Eating steak frites with some bottles of red wine (we could walk from / to our hotel) on trestle tables outside. The restaurant gave us all a special T shirt which I still have. Certainly, cars were driving along the road beside us - watching the range of machinery go by was part of the experience - but generally in a civilised manner. Shame to read that the driving manners of visitors both French and English has deteriorated so as to spoil the experience.

  8. ^ +1

When I rewired my 3A by using a 4 way block and installing two fuse boxes I could not see where the cable feeding the ignition warning light connected to the alternator and had to do t by feel. I pushed the insulated Lucas clip under the prong so no connection and warning light on all the time.

An alternative might be that you have a partial break in the cable(s) from the alternator to the warning light which physically breaks completely with the vibration of driving.

One for the experts - would a short in the cable from alternator to lamp cause the lamp to stay on?

Can you run a temporary cable from the alternator to the warning light to test the theory?

  9. Update.
The two pin electronic flasher relay I had ordered arrived today. With a little adjustment to the carrier it fitted in securely in place of the original one. All wired up and bingo, I have functioning hazard lights.

So many thanks again to Rob for pointing me in the right direction after I had failed to engage my brain properly on this one.
