WHARFEDALE TR's VISIT DAVID BROWN TRACTOR MUSEUM 4th OCTOBER
Wednesday 4th October a group of us visited the David Brown Tractor Museum in Meltham near Huddersfield. The company was originally founded in 1860, making wooden gear patterns for the Textile Industry. In 1936 a subsidiary of the family collaborated with Harry Ferguson to manufacture the Ferguson-Brown Tractor, to Fergusons design. The company was later taken over by Tenneco Case, and eventually closed in 1988 with the loss of over 3000 jobs. Which would be a blow to local economy.
Having said all that the museum is a thriving enterprise run by a great group of volunteers, and hold many general open days, as well as open days linked to other like minded groups.
The Ferguson-Brown Tractor
We had a great time there, sitting on the machines, and generally poking around. John Beavers one of the volunteers was on hand to help and answer the questions.
After the visit we went a few miles up the road to The Carding Shed, formerly the Oil Can Cafe for a bit of lunch and another poke around at some of the classics they had on display. Overall an Interesting day.
