Wharfedale Yorkshire Wolds Autumn Leaves Run October 2022
Sunday 16th October was the Wharfedale Autumn Leaves Run. Steve and Nicola Ellmore had organised the route and decided to take us into the Yorkshire Wolds. An area that one or two from the group had not ventured before. Ooeer.
The original plan was to meet at a Farm Shop Café at Gate Helmsley, just outside Stamford Bridge, from there we would head to our lunch stop at Sledmere House, after first taking in the medieval village at Wharram Percy. From Sledmere we would continue East, and then head South to circle back to end up in Pocklington.
Great plans. However, eagle eyed Brian Eldred spotted that this same Sunday was the York Marathon, and part of the route took in Stamford Bridge, which meant we couldn’t get to our start point.
Some of the group in Pocklington
Steve, after a quick look at the map decided we should meet up and start in Pocklington as well. From here we could quite easily head up to the A166 through Fangfoss and Full Sutton, to pick up the original route. About 11.15am and after refreshments in a couple of Pocklington cafes the 13 cars headed out.
The Medieval Village of Wharram Percy
What a great day it was, the sun shone, the skies were blue, Steve had picked some great roads with fabulous views, and some great villages, Thixendale, Rudston, Kilham, Huggate.
We spent more time than planned at Wharram Percy, so we didn’t get to Sledmere till around 2pm, but no matter.
After leaving Sledmere Steve still had some twiddley roads for us to take, so the fun was by no means over. We finally arrived back in Pockington around 4.15, by this time the sun was dropping away and it was turning a bit chilly.
Back in Pocklington
Another great day out. Thanks Steve.
