Yorkshire Air Museum Elvington September 2022

Yorkshire Air Museum Elvington September 2022

Wednesday 28th September saw 25 of us meeting up at the Yorkshire Air Museum near Elvington. This was an event we had added fairly late on in the year and was organised by John & Jean Hussey.

After coffee and a chat, we spilt into 2 groups, each with a guide to take us around the displays, both outside and inside.

Originally RAF Elvington in WW2, it swerved 77 Squadron Halifax Bombers. Then in 1944 the Squadron moved to Full Sutton, and the base become home to 2 Squadrons of French planes, the base then supporting 2500 French airmen up to 1945.

It opened to the public as a museum in the mid 1980’s, thanks to the vision of a lady by the name of Rachel Semlyen. She worked at the time for York City Council as a Press Officer.

Some members had been before, but others hadn’t, but we were all blown away by the quality of the displays, and by the dedication of the team of volunteers. The guides were very informative, explaining everything and answering the many questions.

We managed to squeeze in lunch, afterwards we lined the cars up Infront of the Dakota for the obligatory photo shoot.

We then continued around the building displays, which were all set up as per the period, almost like time capsules. The French Officers Mess, and the Control Tower being two good examples.

Restored Halifax Bomber, but with bits from al oner the place.

French Officers Mess

Very nice Dakota

Not much room in ere mate

Hmm, bit like being in a tin can

Some of the motley crew lined up in front of the Dakota.

Another cracking day out, even the weather behaved itself.

Thanks again to John & Jean for organising.
