Glavon Group visit to Chavenage House near Tetbury - 5th May 2024

Meeting place on the day was The Angel Cafe in the centre of Sherston, for coffee and other treats in this former Inn before the relatively short drive to Chavenage, dodging packs of marauding death-wish cyclists coming in the opposite direction!

The house, which has only ever been lived in by two families has appeared in many film and TV productions and is perhaps best known as Trenwith, ancient seat of the Poldark family in the recent Poldark drama. In reality, it has an amazing history and was a Parliamentarian stronghold during, and following the civil war. Cromwell's bedroom remains virtually unchanged other than the removal, cleaning and restoration by the V&A Museum of the priceless early tapestries depicting how the Americas were thought to be like in those days.

After a very interesting and engaging tour of the house and the obligatory photos at the front of the house of the 17 cars present, and their crews, it was time for another short drive to Fromebridge Mill for an excellent carvery lunch in what is clearly a very popular place with a usefully large car park.
