Social Scene 340

Allan Jezzard writes:-

My brain has been braised in its own juices recently but today is much cooler so let’s see how it performs.
As I suspected, and reported in edition 339, not much (well nothing) has happened in the procedure to restore my bent 6 to its original shape, so unless Veronica and I get the offer of a lift (which we have had from Bob Pagram), we have to attend shows in my Subaru BRZ which tends to attract a fair bit of attention in its own right. This was especially apparent when we were encouraged to attend Little Easton Gardens near Dunmow, a very informal and friendly show on a Sunday morning. The young volunteers direct you when you arrive as they see fit and a pretty good job they make of it too. “Ooh, a Scooby, we haven’t got one yet, put it over there.”
During the morning an occasional attendee at one of our regular meetings came up to me and said there was a Peerless parked by the gates; “yellow and black” he said. This I must see. Could I spot it? Not on your life; until I saw an enormous vehicle of 1930s vintage in yellow and black. Studying the radiator badge the word “Peerless” could be made out in very small letters round the perimeter. What a car; (see photo), enough room in the back to hold a dance and fitments grand enough grace a ballroom. I’m very short on technical details I’m sorry to say apart from the fact that it was American and the owner assured me it was the only one on the road.
On the 10th July we attended the Show at Cressing Temple Barns which is becoming a regular visit for us. I think it is popular as there are stalls that the ladies (is that o.k. or can I only say women?) can enjoy together with 1920s to 1960s dancing to live groups. A good day.
Our stewardship of TS2 commenced when Pete Leslie collected it from Essex Group on the morning of Sunday 31st July. It was then driven to Alan and Jan Saville’s farm where it would spend the day available for members to look at and drive. Tuesday 2nd August we had an early start setting up a site on Saffron Walden Common where the town council had agreed to us displaying our valuable charge. It was market day and we had a continuous stream of interested people looking not only at TS2 but also the large selection of members’ cars parked alongside. It was so successful that the council representative suggested it should be an annual event!
Two weeks later the group was back at Saffron for their annual car show; an extremely well attended show in tropical heat.
Meanwhile, it is great to report that attendances at our two regular meeting places continue to increase for all information go to www.eastsaxons.com or contact me aljezz@hotmail.com
