East Saxons Social Scene 331
Say it quietly; it looks like my first comment from the last edition might slowly but surely be proving accurate. Normality!
Although Drive-it- Day was successful, it could not be held as an “all inclusive” group event as restrictions re numbers had to be observed. Sunday 27th June however, gave us the opportunity denied for so long. We had booked a club stand at the Cressing Temple Barns Show. Sixteen cars gathered at Braintree and made their way via a diversion to the venue a couple of miles away. It was a bit chaotic turning off the main road and into the site but the police arrived simultaneously and things began to sort themselves out. I’m very reluctant to criticise volunteers but, but I think it would have helped if they’d all had the same hymn sheet. After edging forwards in three foot bursts and the threat of overheating becoming a possibility, we were eventually directed to a field adjacent to the public car park. Initially, this wasn’t met with universal approval. However, after arranging ourselves and retrieving the gazebo from its insect ridden bag, it was decided that the position was ideal especially for those still a little nervous – stacks of room.
After some light sustenance, we had a look at the rest of the Show. A great selection of makes and vehicle types and having discovered the stands of Essex Group and Triumph Club Eastern, it became apparent that Triumphs were in the majority. Lots of interest for the ladies too; craft, collectables, plants, beauty, music and dancing. A great show and a welcome although delayed start to the show season.
Regular club meetings are returning to the diary and numbers are increasing well with existing and new members attending. We’re still staying outside but with earlier starts and some pleasant weather, they are proving most popular.
Looking forward, the Saffron Walden show is on 8th August which is just after this edition is due out. Then we have the Tewin Car & Craft Show on 22nd August, followed by the Colchester Castle Car Show on 5th September. If you haven’t already indicated to Alan Short our event’s organiser your wish to attend any of these shows, please contact him a.s.a.p. to ensure there is still availability.
