EasTRiding Social Scene Report for November 2018

Our normal monthly meetings are on the first Tuesday of the month at the Light Dragoon, Etton. Tuesday 6th November was also our Group’s AGM. Martyn Bell has stood down as deputy group leader to spend more time with his (grand)children. Apparently, the rate of pay for child-minding is greater than that for being deputy. Thanks to Martyn and Jill for their efforts over the years and their willingness to stand-in and get on with things. We now welcome the relative youth of Rob Leonard as deputy group leader. The next generation? 11th November’s Remembrance Day was, of course, the 100th Anniversary of the end of the First World War, the “war to end all wars” !! We always have a Remembrance Day run as our last run out with the TRs each year. This time Roger & Anita Myers were organizing the event. The day was dull but then we got a heavy shower just before the start, so hoods went up, apart from Tim Robinson in his 4 and Phil Warkup in his 3. There were 19 cars out for this one (in November & in the rain), including John Dennison, in his Stag, over from Wharfedale. Brian & Karen Carr didn’t get very far before their 6 broke a stub axle at low speed. Another customer for uprated hubs and axles. The Myers’ route took us passed several churches decorated for the Remembrance Day anniversary, one large outdoor service and the Wolds Waggoners’ Memorial. The route included two of the five local “doubly blessed” villages, Catwick & Helperthorpe, who didn’t lose anyone in either of the World Wars. The rain largely held off after that, but came in heavily again at the “comfort stop” at Sledmere Hall. Lunch was at the reliable Bluebell Inn at Weaverthorpe. This run might have had rain, but that only made the fantastic Autumn Leaves stand out the more. This must be the best display of Autumn leaves that we’ve had for many years, as they were still on the trees for the run. So, thanks to not just Roger & Anita for organising this one but to everyone for turning out on a wet November day, and having to clean their TRs afterwards.
