“Well autumn is definitely on its way. These early starts I’ve swapped out my driving baseball cap for a beanie. With the car show season coming to an end we still managed to attend a few. First up a local event to me, organised by North Devon Sports and Classic Car Club was a run to Bideford and an exclusive tour of the steam ship SS Freshspring which is being restored on the quay, well worth a nose round if you’re over that way.

Then, some Devon members attended the Merry Harriers Garden centre sports and classic show – a free event with around a hundred classic cars to look at and a discounted breakfast, what’s not to like? Next we enjoyed a sunny late August meeting at Honiton Hill Vintage Rally which had something for everyone including lawn mower racing, tractor pull, steam engines plus the auction, not to mention the classic cars, bikes, tractors, lorries and coaches on display. There was even a stunt man who for one stunt set himself on fire in a box which was then blown up! - Spectacular but very weird.

Next we managed to squeeze in a picnic; the first attempt had to be cancelled due to inclement weather grrr! But we managed to meet up a week later at Fernworthy reservoir. A fantastic turnout of 14 cars and 24 picnickers where old and new friends all enjoyed the scenic location.

The September Sunday lunch was kindly organised by Mark and Jo; meeting for coffee at the National Trust’s, Knightshayes Court, followed by a short drive to The Anchor Inn on the river Exe. Finally the event I had been looking forward to, the Goodwood Revival and it certainly did not disappoint. I went along with Steve and Chris, entering into the spirit by dressing up in period attire even though we looked like rejects from Peaky Blinders! The racing was spectacular viewed from any location around the circuit. I’m amazed how the drivers don’t hold back throwing million pound cars around this historic track. Away from the circuit there is plenty to see and entertain even spotting a few famous faces, the likes of Alan Milliard, Jenson Button, Rowan Atkinson and Dominic Chinea from the TV series the Repair Shop. With the racing, air display and even just checking out the classic cars in the car park Goodwood is an event I thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend. Autumn may be here but we still have many more outings so don’t forget to check our Devon calendar and look out for the emails from trrdevon@gmail.com”.
