TR Action 349

Chris Thirtle writes: First, welcome to the newest members of our Group, Glenn Eddery who hails from Ilkeston way, and Tony Hodges and his TR4A. Looking forward to seeing you and your TRs out on a few runs in 2024.

Our cars might be in hibernation, but the WhatsApp Group is active with questions and requests for advice. For example, Tony H needed help ‘fettling his Strombergs’ having ‘enjoyed a good grip of his SU’s’. Too much information Tony. Ian H has enlisted the help of Howard J to rebuild the engine and improve cooling on his TR6. No pressure Ian, but Drive it Day is only 3 months away. Speaking of Howard, I need to thank him for ‘temporarily’ securing the starter motor on my TR4 with some judicially placed tie wraps. As a get you home’ fix it worked brilliantly. That was 6 months ago now and the tie wraps are still doing an amazing job. I was, honestly, in my garage and about to start fixing this when the chat group lit up with Tony H struggling with the removal of his 4A’s ‘smoking starter motor’. Having read how he’d dismantled most of the front end of his car to get the broken starter motor out, I decided the tie wraps were doing great and made a cup of tea. Good luck to everyone out there nursing grazed knuckles and studying a Haynes Manual.

The cars may have been quiet, but socially the Group have been very active. Club night in November was Pie n Peas. Over 50 people attended, and it was a great way to welcome our new members. In early December it was the Pre-Christmas lunch at the Oakhill Hotel, Cromford, where 29 members gathered to enjoy a full Christmas spread. That was just the warm up though as the December Group meeting saw the Group return to the South Wingfield Social Club for mince pies, mulled wine and carol ‘singing’. Now bring on the presents.

I did get a chance to take the TR out in some white stuff before the gritters took to the road. My driving enjoyment was interrupted by my phone ringing. Hands free, I picked up. My Boss told me I’d been promoted to be his assistant. I lost concentration and swerved erratically. Minutes later my Boss rang me again. He’d been promoted and I’d been promoted again to take his old job. Shocked, I lost control and crashed into a field. The police came along and the officer asked ‘what happened to you’? I told him I had careered off the road. Sorry, my jokes over Zoom weren’t remotely funny either.
