Social Scene Report - TRaction Issue 346 part 1

Chris Thirtle writes: First, a plea for your help. During the handover from Alan J to Sarah S as Group Communications member, it became apparent that the Group contacts list for members requires updating. Please would all Derbyshire Dales Group members contact Sarah at trrddcommunications@yahoo.com with their current mobile and email contact details. If anyone wishes to opt out of receiving Group messages, please let Sarah know at the same time, even if you have previously asked. Thank you.

Well, the TRing season is underway. On a damp, cold, overcast Drive It Day, a committed few (or maybe a few who should be committed) braved the elements and 7 TRs, a brace of E Types, and a ‘lesser spotted Aston Martin’ set off from South Wingfield for a gathering of steam and classic car enthusiasts at the North Staffs and Cheshire Traction Engine Club, Draycott in the Clay. On arrival we were directed to park in the centre of the muddy grass display area which did cause concern but, with judicious use of the right foot, sufficient traction was maintained to get on and off again. Simon A and Ian H provided the technical challenges of the day, with a loose carburettor and electrical failure respectively. However, by the time the cold and rain hastened a retreat to a local pub for sustenance, those of capable hands and knowledgeable heads had these problems fixed. Most crews drove around 80 miles on the day and, whilst the weather wasn’t great, the run provided a good shake down for the cars and the ideal excuse to just get out there and drive them.

The Group agreed at its AGM to trial a second Group meeting each month, to be held on the 4th Tuesday of the month, in addition to the usual Wednesday meetings. Nine members made the inaugural Tuesday meeting on the 25 April at The Crispin, Great Longstone but, as the weather improves and the evenings get longer, hopefully a few more members will take advantage of another chance to enjoy their TRs and some good company.

As I write Dave B and Sarah S are leading some of the more intrepid Group members on an overseas trip to the Spa Classic, and Tim and Ruth B have reported competition success with a Second in Class on the HERO Scottish Malts Rally. Congratulations. I think you’re all heroes for taking on these events. If you’re feeling inspired to get out there and join us, there’s plenty of events coming up. Check the website for full details.
