allan
Hi, I need to remove the windscreen on my "77 FHC" due to rust appearing under the frame. I believe that the screen has not been removed since manufacture and I understand they are heat bonded. Question: does anyone know where the wires are located to allow re-heating the mastic for removal? Also, when re-fitting, can I use cold mastic rather than the original method? Thanks all, Alan. simon
Generally you can use a very thin wire or similar to cheese cutting wire (high strength but very thin) to remove the screen taking care to not scratch the paintwork. Then rebond the screen using silkaflex windscreen bonding sealer its better than the original seal but can be very messy, you can buy this from most good automotive places and even Rimmers! Thanks for your reply Simon. I will try your suggestion - perhaps if I heat it with a hairdryer at the same time it may help. Thanks, Alan.

andrewt
Hi Guys For the two screens i have removed from factory built cars, i found they both almost fell out of the car, once the stainless surround was removed. this is because the wire to heat the seal starts off the curing reaction, which then merrily continues. Once started it keeps on hardening (slowly), until eventually (after 20 years) it is so hard it starts to crack. i would recommend using the modern adhesives now. A nice tip is to paint a border on the glass before gluing in so a neat balck line is presented, instead of a wavy black sealer line. I used blackboard paing for this as it sticks nicely to the glass. Also i got a homer from one of the windscreen specialists to help me install it the first time. it was easily worth the £10 fo rthe help. Cheers Andy
