kstrutt1
Hi there, I have owned a tr7 for 10 years now and have finaly decided to V8 it, I have purchased a late (1986) SD1 V8 carb engine and am planning to carry out all the modifications to Xmember etc myself (I am a chartered engineer). I am not looking for a racer just a better performance road car, it will also run on LPG (as the 4cyl currently does), and the suspension, brakes and axle have already been uprated. Can anyone help with a couple of questions: Engine position: the TR8 moved the gearbox further back, If I don't do this what problems will it cause? Exhaust : I plan to use the SD1 cast manifolds and fabricate downpipes Do the manifolds fit OK? If possible I will fabricate the X member to used SD1 mounts has anyone done this? Kevin. andrewt
Hi Kevin The first V8 i did i used the standard Tr7 gearbox mounts & SD1 engine mounts. I cut off the SD1 mounts from a rover subframe, bolted them to the engine and lowered it to where it needed to be. (Where the sump lines up with the Tr subframe). Then fabricated brackets to the Tr subframe. The problems with this are: 1 The SU carbs will not clear an early bonnet, but may clear a double bulge later bonnet. 2 You need the TR8 radiator mounts or fabricate something, you also need to find P6 pulley, alternator bracket & water pump. 3 The SD1 manifolds won't fit. You need Range Rover, Tr8 or P6 manifolds to fabricate to. (or tubular ones!) 4 Weight distribution is not quite as good as with the engine mounted back. The battery will stay where it is, though you can't fit an enormous one due to the size of the tray. In all you can do it on a budget like this, but the car is nicer with the Tr8 mounts, shorter Tr8 prop, tubular manifolds etc. Most important thing to do is tighten down all the suspension bushes & fit decent brakes. These are must haves. I would also recommend uprating springs & shocks. All the specialists have good recommendations on what is appropriate here. Cheers & enjoy it! Andy... jothecat
Hi Kevin, the previous owner of my car did the conversion himself too. He fabricated downpipes, had a 5core radiator custom made, alyered the sub frame, moved the engine & gearbox 2 inches further back than standard conversions. I can give you his details if you're interested. Jo 4.6lt 340bhp.
