morph
Hi, I understand that the LT77 box has a driven oil pump and should not be towed. If it is what damage will result, is it to the pump or is it a bit more extensive? Regards Paul Edited August 20, 2006 by morph
rosey
With the pump not running there is no lubrication to the gearbox which is of course still rotating (with no lubrication) the result is gears overheating and bearing failure. Wrecked gearbox! Nuff said? Edited August 20, 2006 by rosey
Beans
The oil pump in the LT77 'box (which is driven by the secondary shaft) only feeds the primary shaft's gear bearings. Compared to the 4 speed 'box this is extra lubrication. The gears are fed in the normal way (splattering oil around) So towing is no problem, as long as you don't overdo it. But that's counts for all gearboxes
morph
Crikey, two opposite views, now I'm confused. Is there any way of assessing the box withot stripping it at all before I risk fitting it to the car and having to rip it out again? Paul
Beans
Listen for rattles from the 'box when the engine is idling and the 'box is in neutral and on normal working temperature. If it rattles the gear-bearings from the primary shaft are probably worn You can check the oil pump by unscrewing the plug on the underside of the 5th gear housing (alloy extension at the rear of the 'box, see BL workshop manual). There should be a continuous oil flow from the hole when the engine is running on idle and the 'box is in neutral If the 'box is out of the car the only things you can check is play on the inputshaft and see how the gearchange is. And offcourse check the oil for traces of brass (synchromeshes) and or steel from the teeth Edited August 23, 2006 by Beans
morph
Thanks Beans. At the worst I suppose I will get some practice at gearbox swaps!!!
