In a nutshell the TR7 was fitted with a 4 cylinder 2.0l engine; the TR8 had a Rover 3.5l v8 lump under the bonnet. Officially the TR8 was never sold in the UK, as the car was withdrawn before it was ever launched. A couple of thousand went to the States, virtually all TR8's you see will be converted TR7's. Other variants - such as the TR7 Sprint (fitted with a 2.0 16v engine, rather than the 8valve head) never made it to the showrooms either, though some genuine example do exist.
