trt74
While taking my TR6 out of hibernation this week and taking her for a drive I experienced difficulty shifting up from 1st into 2nd and 2nd into 3rd gear. These gears could only be engadged without crunching when shifting very slowly. The TR is parked in a unheated garage and the outside temperature was a few degrees Celsius above zero. The problem became less obvious after driving for a while and disappeared when the engine was quite warm. I expect it is caused by the synchromeshrings not functioning well when the gearboxoil is thick. But I wonder if this is something to worry about and maybe a sign of detoriating synchromeshrings or a normal experience with a cold engine? The gearbox was overhauled last summer for the second time by a Triumph specialist in England, after at the first overhaul poor quality synchromeshrings were used, which lasted only 500 miles. As the box is still under garantee it's very important to me to know if the described problem is a normal occurence or a sign of impending gearbox trouble! Guest harry dent
I hope you did not get it 'reconned' by the guy who is just outside of London(suburbs) as you will have problems.
marvmul
Badly weared synchromesh hubs and wear of the elements of the main shaft can cause crunching of the gears when shifting up. The 2nd gear bush has an upside rim : often this is cracked in the end the rim becomes completely apart from the rest of the bush, making changing gears almost impossible. The synchromesh rings are probably not at fault.
