TR4 steering wheels

My old wheel on CT392 certainly has seen better days, the black plastic is chipped and marked after 54 years sterling service.

 

My painter said he could paint it in 2 pack if I rubbed it down.

 

So I started, and assumed it was made from black plastic material through and through, but beneath the black outer finish was a grey plastic.

 

Now I seem to remember that the early Triumph Herald cars had grey steering wheels, and wondered if the TR4 wheels were made from the same grey plastic, and then painted.

 

Or was the material changed later on?
