V8 Exhaust

Recommended Posts

All the off the shelf exhausts I have seen, for TR's, have the H balance pipe. Why is it is fitted to these and not to a TR6 which have two independent pipes?

I am looking a putting Janspeed boxes at the rear, but do I need to put this H pipe in or run it as independents

It is very common practise to put a balance, or H pipe, is exhause systems with two banks. The other TRs don't have this because there's only one bank of cylinders.

The reason they put the balance pipe in is to balance the pressures on each side of the engine. That way both banks perform the same as they have the same back pressure.

If you have the two banks collecting into one exit, the balance pipe is generally not needed, it's only with dual exit exhausts.

I got a new muffler put on my TR7 V8 a few weeks back to make it quieter! It was putting out 97dBa @ 3300RPM free revving.

I was told the the engine needed more backpressure to work good.... turns out that the old muffler was completely blocked up. Had about 1/2" of soot over every surface. Too much backpresure is what it had. Now my new muffler is nice and loud at idle and much quieter on cruise. You can actually talk to the person next to you now  :)
