Triumph TR4 @ Watkins Glen

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I found this forum looking searching for something and I see Chris Marx is here. There is a lot of cool information in here.

Thought you guys might enjoy this..

(you can got to 480p which is a little higher quality).

The driver is 76yo and does almost all of his own car prep. The way the rules are written, the cars with 15" wheels are under tired compared to the 13" and 14" cars. (55 series sidewall minumum. All the good treaded R-DOTS in 15" are in 205/50 sizes). Driver qualifed 3rd oa, but problems in the previous qualifying race meant starting 19th (field size about 45 cars). Average lap speed is 87.2mph, and touching just a bit over 130mph before the chicane.

Here's a picture of the car.

Cars in that lead pack:

Camera car: 1963 Triumph TR4 (5.5" Goodyear Bluestreak tires)

White/Blue stripe: Yenko Stinger

light green roadster: MGB (205/55 Kumho V700 tires)

white roadster: Datsun 2000 (205/60 Hoosier Street TD tires)

blue/metal: 1500cc Lotus Super 7 (205/60 Hoosier Street TD tires)

Orange/Silver: Datsun Bluebird (205/60 Toyo R888).

White car they were catching up to, before it broke: x-flow Elva Courier (http://britishracecar.com/BillThumel-Elva-Courier.htm)

Posted another video from New Jersey Motorsports Park

(switch to 480p for slightly better quality)

This was the very first weekend that this track was open. This is both drivers' 3rd or 4th session on this track, so they were still learning. A brand new surface combined with 100+ degree weather, made for slick conditions and it chewed the tires up (both fronts were corded at the end of the race). An Austin Healey dumped gear oil on the track on the pace lap. You can see the black steak on the left side of the track starting at T5. The Morgan 4/4 is a 1600cc x-flow version and per rules weighs 550lbs less than the Triumph.

again a great video!

Learning track explains why several times not the whole track width was used.

Great stuff - enjoyed it a lot.

Cheers

Chris, it's hard to see in the youtube video, but they were avoiding gear oil on the driver side of the track starting at T5 (tight left hander after the fast right) all the way up through T8 (decreasing radius right hander). An Austin Healey 3000 lost a drain plug (I guess he's never heard of safety wire) on the pace lap and dumped it everywhere. I edited out a bunch of laps, Dick tried straddling it, but the the car jumped completely sideways.
