Nic Bowman
Hi My TR4a has a big valve head and fast road cam, which doesn't bode well for tickover... It runs well, but if I set the fuel / air mixture so the plugs run the right colour, it runs very rich on tickover, and wants to stall, particluarly when hot. I need to set hot tickover at 1000 or it will die after 30 sec or so. I have a 2E needle at the moment, which is not as per original - although I am not sure what the original was. It is a 1965 car. Does anyone know what nedle it should have, and or have any sage words? Thanks Nic
Ade-TR4
If you've spent the dosh getting a fruity engine built-up, you should bung it on the rolling road to get it set up properly. Tricky to do otherwise without huge selection of needles and lots of time/ trial/ error. When my car had SUs fitted, I thought it was running OK-ish. Took it to the rolling road where they "found" 20 more ponies lurking under the bonnet! Best £110 I'd spent on the car! Cheers Adey
blades
Adey You will have to excuse my ignorance, when you say rolling road to get it set up properly what does this involve? This kind of information helps towards my education as my technical knowledge is very limited Nick
Ade-TR4
A rolling road is found at specialist garages where the car can be driven on a set of rollers whilst being monitored. The car remains stationary and allows the mechanic to make adjustments whilst the car is being driven. Put "rolling road" into google and find the nearest one to you: check they are classic-car savvy first though! A couple of hours on the RR should have the car feeling much improved. It has 87mm pistons etc,the 4A camshaft and inlet manifold and an extractor manifold so I suppose it puts out just a bit more than a standard 4A and seems happy with the current needle set-up. It is running on 2E needles which I believe were standard for the 4A and are slghtly richer than the 2A variety. There is also a 2H needle which I assume is richer still and may well suit your engine. Suggest you have a word with a carburettor specialist (? Southern Carburettors in Wimbledon) or, as Adey suggested, book a rolling road, but make sure they are 'Classic' orientated and have some Stromberg needles!
