Toyota Tranny in the TR3

Recommended Posts

In the US many of us have converted our stock boxes to Toyota 82/85 Celica 5 speeds. There is a popular kit available but one of the gear heads in our Phoenix, Az club designed his own that I've been running.

You cut the bell housing from the old 4 speed TR box and weld a plate he's designed for match up. The TR front drive shaft flange has the extension cut off and the Toyota male portion (into the Toy tranny) is a tight press fit inside the TR flange, just weld it in place.

Since the Toyota box allows for flex/expansion at the box a steel collar is fitted to the stock drivshaft making it rigid.

I'm using the stock TR3 flywheel, pressure plate and throw out bearing with a Toyota clutch plate and a modified pilot bearing. The fork/shaft etc is also used but the fork bolt is moved to the front for clearance.

Love the thing not only for the 5th gear (.783 = 78 mph @ 3000 rpm/ 104 mph @ 4000 rpm etc.) but for the quick shifting. This box seems to match the cars torque curve better than stock too.

There is no cutting on the car required and everything can be returned to stock (if you get another Tr box and they go very cheaply here)

Cheers

Alan,

Presently I'm just watching the rpm and using the stock speedo. I've used an online calculator to fig the dif..

http://www.fatboyraceworks.com/gears/...the Toy tranny is 3.285/1.894/1.275/1/0.783 thru the five gears with a 3.7 dif. Fun to play with and compare the stock unit.

You've given me an idea though...I wonder how hard it would be to gut an extra TR3 speedo and replace the internals with a Toyota unit?.

As a rule of thumb the TR speedo reads from 15 to 18 mph slow.
