Engine Reconditioning

Recommended Posts

I am considering fitting a replacement engine in my ex-US TR6. I want a reliable standard road going engine rather than one with all the go faster knobs and whistles. On my searches on the internet I have found a company that looks like it will supply an engine at reasonable cost. This is Quiller Triumph. I have asked them for a quotation.

I live in Belgium and so have little experience of UK companies doing this type of work. Has anybody used this company before? I realise that adverse comments cannot be made so really just seeking reassurance that they are as good a company as their internet site looks.

Hi Don

There are a lot of threads on the forum regarding rebuilt engines. Having read most of them when i was looking for an engine builder myself, and having discussed the topic at length via the forum, I can say that the best course of action is to contact as many suppliers as possible and discuss your requirements. Ask what components will be used (Will have a significant effect on longevity of the engine) what their build procedures are (Do they build it in house or use a third party?) how long the build will take (Can be affected by how busy they are or simply taking their time to do a good job) and, of course, price. Most of the TR suppliers will take the time to discuss these things with you, and you will start to build a picture of what makes a quality engine.

Talking to suppliers directly will also give you an idea of how well you can communicate with the individuals involved. Some people you can relate to easily, and some you can't. Personally I'd rather deal with someone I can discuss things with in clarity in case of unforeseen problems. My experience with the people that built my engine was very positive (Even though the build took much longer than I anticipated) but I know of another forum member whose experience of dealing with the same specialist was quite different.

There is a good list of recommended suppliers via a link on the home page of this site. I'm sure that the Register could also supply you with details of specialists in Belgium ( i know that there are at least two) - this would also make it easier for you to deal with any warranty claims if the job isn't as high-quality as you'd hoped for.

Hope it helps

Dave

This thread might give a little clarity. http://www.tr-register.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=8040

Ironically, as you will see, my engine died in Belgium!

Thanks to all who have replied both privately and on the forum. As has been said in the trail recommended above there are good TR engineers in Belgium, but they all tend to live in the Flemish area which is quite a distance from where I live SW of Brussels. Parts are available in Belgium, but they tend to be more expensive than in the UK. I actually know of an excellent engineer through TR Belgium, but I do not have an arm and a leg to spare. To be fair I understands that he concentrates on racing machines and the consequence of that is that his prices would probably be on the high side. I just want a good reliable road car that does not burn half a gallon of oil between Belgium and Malvern (350 miles) and retains reasonable oil pressure. So a reasonable UK engine shop seems to be the answer. I just need to find one on recommendations, rather than blindly from the net. I am getting there thanks to all of you.

Hi Bruce

I have entrusted a number of engine builds to Carlow Engineering in Benfleet Essex, about 30 minutes from Ebsfleet the Eurostar station.

They (Tony and Gordon) have been building engines since the 60s, they are currently building me an all steel engine for my 6, they built the engine in the car a year ago.

Not expensive and very smart men.

HTH,

Steve
