I'm a little perplexed by this one. First off horn dosen't work.

Replaced one horn as connections were knackered.

Fitted new steering column earth lead (bottom). Checked steering column flex coupling earth - present and intact. Fiddled with horn push.

Still nothing.

Replaced relay with new unit (Lucas 6RA).

Bingo - horn works.

But NOT with the ignition switch ON ??

Have tried various wiring combinations to the relay as was unsure of PO set up.

No joy with the ignition switched on, but works with igntion off.

Studying the circuit diagram the horn system is independent of the ignition circuit yes ?

Any ideas welcome as will be an MOT failure.

Very strange. The horns hang off the purple circuit and have power all the time, ignition on or off. Other stuff on this circuit includes interior lamps, glove box lamp, headlight flash to pass etc. Do those work with the ignition on ?. If they do the power to the purple circuit is ok and the problem must be with the horn components although I'm struggling to come up with a scenario where they dont work with the ignition on unless the wiring to the relay is totally confused and with the ignition off you are seeing a path to ground and with it on you dont. Double check the relay wiring and if you cant identify each terminal with 100% accuracy take off the relay so you can get a good look at it.

FWIW This note was posted to the 6pack today in response to a similar question. Nice piece of diagnostics too.

This is what's happening: When you take the key out, you're engaging the

steering wheel lock thus creating a ground for the horn. When you start the

car the wheel lock disengages, just breaking the ground with the steering

column.

I would think that you're problem is most like the ground strap that is

supposed to exist between the upper steering column and the lower. Make

sure it's there... also, you should also have a ground connected to the

grease fill bolt on your steering rack as well.

I had the same issue.. it took me days to figure it out because the ground

strap on the upper steering column "looked" like it was installed correctly,

but really looped back on itself.

Good luck,

Thanks for that, I'll double check the earth strap(s) again, although I'm sure the coupling earth was ok....

Regarding the purple wiring circuit, the interior lights/glove box illumination are all not working at the moment, so will sort that out at some point.

Many thanks for replies.
