Rocker box gasket

I use a light smear of Blue Hylomar to hold the gasket in position in the rocker cover recess & a light smear of grease on the cork to seal against the head; use a new fibre washer under each steel washer on the fixings.

The trick with these is not to over tighten the rocker cover fixings; the more you tighten the more the cover distorts & the more it leaks; in some cases covers have been permanently distorted!

Hi Simon, can only second Richard's comment - don't do the securing nuts up to tight, unless a tubular space tube is on the stud under the cover, with a washer above - if just a nut and washer, use a Nyloc.

Use spray glue (carpet glue or similiar) to bond the gasket to the clean rockercover, let it dry for a bit, then fit, as mentoned, don't overdo the tightening, just nice even pressure across the 3 studs.

Hi Simon

Any proprietary seal will do or even none at all if the cover is good. The problem as already posted is usually caused by overtightening and a distorted cover, it is worth dressing it with a hammer and dolly to get the flanges flat and the bolt holes true.

A nice alloy cover solves the problem 100% and if you just nip the gasket it is reusable about half a dozen times.

Simon,

No amount or style of sealant will seal if the surfaces aren't straight.

The standard rocker cover is a very light weight pressing, and distorts easily.

Check it for twist, by placing it on a flat surface with the light behind - a table top in front of a window is fine. Is the edge flat on the table?

And check that your DPO hasn't overtightened the hold-down nuts. The area around the studs can get depressed and this can lead to distortion. Carefully beat out any reverse bulges.

And dings in the edge - again, careful beating out required.

Good luck!

John
