  1. Thanks folks.

I need a big obvious visible deterrent such as the StopLock - Thanks Roger I'll pop by Halfords and exercise my trade card on my way up North this afternoon.

I also have a Facet fuel pump and could quite easily put a switch in there or a master isolator - perhaps look at that after our TRip.

Looks like the sun is shining so will post a few pic's on my return.

    Cheers

  2. Sounds strange to me & I can't comment on the similarity between 4 & 4a.

I have very recently fitted the CCD uprated front hubs on my 4a and no issues whatsoever - everything lines up and has nicely settled in.

Not sure this helps you Don, but just to confirm for me that all was well.

Hope you get this resolved as the hubs are a lovely mod and match the CCD drive shafts too that smooth out the rear end..

    Good luck.

  3. Rolling Road will give you the accurate air/fuel over the rev range.. I had to change my head recently and although re-worked to the same spec' I still went for a set up at the RR..

I'm also at Classic Le Mans so another reason to have the carb's tweaked..

  4. Hello Simon

    I'm near Cambridge..

I've had the whole car in pieces at some point in the past, so like you have had the front suspension totally apart before and it is all poly bushed. I do have a spring compressor thank you - might need a new piece of studding if I recall from the last use..

Yes, I have the modified mounts too and thanks for the thought..,

Will not get to this job now for a few weeks, so I will postpone the hammering fun for a while..

    Cheers

  5. Hi Mark

I fitted the cdd hubs with the bigger stub axles a few years ago.

Getting the old stub axles out was interesting, one came out quite easily the other needed a 20 ton press and hammering!

By fulcrum pins do you mean vertical links, which would obviate the above problem?

The only other difficulty that i had was the spacers supplied were incorrect and caused the disk to foul the calliper, CDD promptly sent me replacements that were perfect.

Otherwise an easy and worthwhile job.

    Steve

Not replacing the vertical links unless there's an issue with mine and I understand getting the stub axles out can be challenging..

  6. Folks

As my gearbox is away having a refurb', I'm about to replace the standard front hubs for the CDD ones that have been sitting in my garage for nearly a year..

I'm also planning to change the fulcrum pins & I haven't given it any thought yet, so before I start what's the best way to go about these jobs?

    Cheers

  7. Wise words gentlemen..

FIA ready would be much better just in case...

My own 4a is no slouch, so I think you're right to consider compatibility which in turn enhances values.

Still a very pretty car mind!

  8. For sure to build the same car now (not that the chassis number could be found I'm sure) would cost more than the asking price, as would mine I guess too.

It's just that if I close my eyes and think of the best looking TR in my mind I see these powder blue rally cars - they're just lovely and if I had the inclination I'd build my own - just like this one..

Ideally I'd get a drive in it and trade mine in, but auctions aren't quite that accommodating..

May well get registered and go take a punt..

  9. I have MX5 seats in my 4a and over 8 years and 10k miles (ish) they are Ok on comfort. the driver's seat needs a new base as it's a bit thin now and I do occasionally have to re-adjust on the move.

They sit very low (I needed to knock in the base pan) which is a good thing I think and I have the TR shop runners which work well.

Personally I find they lack support if you're really pushing on, so it does depend how hard you drive I'd say. Mine by the way are faux leather (came with all the other bits when I got the car) so good if they get wet/spilled on/sweaty etc .

I would like to change my seats to something with more lateral support but as you're reading they are a subjective and very personal purchase.. there is a local upholsterer I keep meaning to ask if he can just increase a bit the bolsters on mine existing seats - must get around to asking.

  10.

The Classic TT is much more relaxed than the TT, I usually do the parade lap as well on the Monday which is a good experience to do if you have never been round and Jurby on the Sunday os excellent as well. Andy Dudgeon and Craig Neve are riding my 2 bikes this year so both top ten capable guys in the Superbike race hopefully, fingers crossed everything holds together as there is no other bike race out there that takes as much of a toll on bikes.

Have enclosed a frw bike pictures of some of my bikes and ones I have restored. The green ZXR is an old Team Green bike from 1989, the Red Bull coloured one was John Reynolds number 1 bike form WSB in 1995, Jim Moodie raced it at the TT in 96 and it was the first Kwak to do 120mph round thee TT course, Steve Hislop then used it for the last 5 rounds of BSB in 96 as well. The FZR600 is Mike Edwards 1994 V and M bike, all original and unrestored from there, he won the North West on the bike and was 2nd in the british championship that year.

    Alasdair

There is some impressive history there. Was the ZXR ridden by Ray Swann?

I was/am a huge Hizzy fan - what a talent and what a loss. I remember well seeing Brain Morrison, Joey Dunlop and Hizzy on the Verandah in the Lightweight TT scrapping like it was short circuit - I think I even managed a polaroid of it (will have a dig later)

The V&M bike too super important in racing history given what the late great David Jeffires managed at the TT - He would have given John McGuinness and Michael Dunlop something to think about.

I had a '91 FZR600 for my first visit and absolutely loved it. I never quite got myself that EXUP, but I'm putting that right in March as I have the 2018 R1M on order..

I'm fairly regularly in Stirling/Bridge of Allan/Cumbernauld and would be pleased to have a proper look at the bikes and of course the 4a..

  11. Excellent colour choice. I'm planning to make my first Classic TT trip this year and forgo the TT for once as it's just too busy and getting a clear run at the mountain is getting a rarity unfortunately. First went to the TT in '91 so the bikes you're working on now were no doubt there in the TT back in the day.

I also have a '65 4a and whilst I've pretty much re-built the whole thing over the years, it started as a LHD rolling chassis project and now looks like this.

If I can do it anyone can - good luck and welcome to TR ownership.

I found that pictures of an assembly or certain part of the car useful as I worked on different areas as I didn't necessarily have the TR knowledge or anything else to compare against. This is a good place to ask for help & pictures from those that know plenty about our cars.

    Feel free to share 80's & 90's race bike pics - especially FZR's, TZ's and LC's - my favourites...
